bon encore glazer
Fergie: I’ll stay but do not mess with my job
Sir Alex Ferguson last night vowed to work with American tycoon Malcolm Glazer in a desperate bid to save Manchester United. He insists he will not walk out on Old Trafford until he knows the club he rebuilt is safe. And that means he will stay on for another year at least. Ferguson was bitterly opposed to the £790million takeover and is still upset by the events of the past 72 hours. But Sport of the World understands he fears United — and crucially the supporters — could end up with a broken club unless he stays to steady the ship. After an emergency Old Trafford board meeting on Friday night, Fergie told a close pal: " There are still assurances I need but, at the moment, it looks as though I will carry on. We have an outstanding squad with three very good young players in Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher, who are all developing."

Fergie going nowhere – Querioz
Sir Alex Ferguson has no intention of walking away from Manchester United as a result of Malcolm Glazer´s takeover, according to his Old Trafford number two Carlos Queiroz. Speculation has been rife that the United boss could retire following the American businessman´s Old Trafford coup. " Sir Alex is not considering his future. That´s rubbish. I have spoken to him and he is fine," said Queiroz. " We only have one thing in our minds, which is a good performance against Southampton and to prepare the best we can for the FA Cup Final. That is what´s expected from us and nothing can affect our concentration and attitude. Our future doesn´t depend on things that are not part of our business. It will depend on football. Our future is about winning trophies and our minds are concentrated on only the next two games.”

Glazer battle to keep Rio
Malcolm Glazer is facing his first crisis as Manchester United´s new owner after Real Madrid made a sensational £21million swoop for Rio Ferdinand. The News of the World can reveal Real´s marketing director, Jose Angel Sanchez, flew to Manchester last week in a bid to exploit the turmoil surrounding Glazer´s controversial takeover. The American tycoon has saddled United with a £265m debt mountain in order to finance his buy-out and may now be tempted to recoup some of that money by selling Ferdinand. Real are also acutely aware that Rio has still not signed a new contract to stay at United and the lure of linking up with his England team-mates David Beckham and Michael Owen could prove irresistible.

Glazer: Go get me Beckham
Malcolm Glazer is prepared to bankroll a dramatic bid to bring David Beckham back to Old Trafford. The American tycoon will give Sir Alex Ferguson the final say, but The People understands the Glazer camp is keen for the England skipper to join the new Old Trafford regime. And the idea might be tempting for Becks, who is trying to raise his own personal profile in the United States. Glazer, of course, will be desperate to promote United in his own Amercian market. And he knows Beckham is the ONLY footballer to warrant a mention in the US media. Fergie would not entertain the idea of re-signing Becks if he thought it was just a marketing gimmick. But privately, Fergie has told friends that there are no hard feelings between him and Beckham - despite the saga of the flying boot and the player´s departure for Spain. Indeed, Beckham has recently paid tribute to Fergie´s role in his career.

We will destroy Glazer
Fuming Manchester United fans last night declared all-out war on Malcolm Glazer. The American tycoon is already 20-1 at one leading bookies to go bust by January - and supporters vow that is what is going to happen. Protest groups are gearing up to railroad his £790million takeover bid with a no-holds-barred plan of action that includes forcing Old Trafford to shut, taking Glazer on in court, tearing up season tickets, forging tickets to completely jam up European nights and tarnishing the club´s name so that backers and sponsors no longer want to know.

Nike get jittery at fan boycott
Alarm bells are ringing at Nike as militant Manchester United fans prepare to step up their merchandising war designed to hit Malcolm Glazer in the pocket. Senior figures at the American sportswear giants have become concerned that fans are boycotting the United mega-stores in protest at Glazer´s Old Trafford take-over. And I can reveal that Nike´s lawyers have checked the fine-print on their £300million contract with United that offers them an option to terminate or re-negotiate six years in. Nike inserted the clause to offer an escape route but they never expected to have to invoke the option when they joined forces with United four years ago. The deal is worth £23m-a-season to United, spread over 13 years, and is vital to their overall business plan.

Fans plans to scupper the Cup
Militant Man Utd fans plan to sabotage the FA Cup final with a mass pitch invasion to vent revenge on new owner Malcolm Glazer. They plan to storm barriers, dodge security and handcuff themselves to goal posts during the club´s showpiece clash with Arsenal next Saturday. If successful, it will bring their anti-Glazer campaign a worldwide audience. And in a move that will disgust genuine soccer fans, a network of hardened football hooligans have been primed to cause havoc across Europe during the Champions League campaign - in the hope that UEFA football bosses will kick Man Utd out. The drastic measures come as American tycoon Glazer is on the brink of completing a £790million take-over of the club.

We won´t line dance to Glazer´s tune, says Freddie Shepherd
Newcastle United supremo Freddy Shepherd has warned Malcolm Glazer that the new Manchester United owner will face ridicule from his Premier League rivals if he thinks he can rip up the current television deal. An attempt by Glazer to derail the present contract is seen as a crucial part of the American billionaire´s £790million takeover strategy. But Shepherd declared: " The Premiership chairmen aren´t going to line-dance to Malcolm Glazer´s tune over domestic television rights." The American billionaire would need 14 of the 20 Premiership clubs to back any proposal to scrap the collective TV deal and allow Manchester United to set up a lucrative individual agreement with BSkyB or another broadcasting company. Shepherd is convinced that it would be impossible for Glazer to get 13 clubs to support a plan that he claims would be " the equivalent of turkeys voting for Christmas." The Newcastle chairman said: " He has to remember that this isn´t American Football and that what he has done with television deals in the past in the USA may not be legally achievable here."

English football could go into meltdown
A British businessman, close to the Glazer business empire, fears that their arrival at Manchester United will lead to financial meltdown in English football. Arthur Porter, publisher of the Tampa Bay Business Journal, was born in Manchester and is a lifelong United fan. He has also had dealings with the Glazer family and revealed: " Malcolm Glazer is so driven by money that I just can´t see the structure of English football being able to survive his involvement. When I first met them a couple of years ago, they owned six per cent of United. I tried to talk to them about the club, just chat, about the stars and how the season was going, that sort of thing. But none of them seemed to know anything about it." Porter also believes that Glazer could take Manchester United out of the Premiership to create a European super-league. He added: " That would kill off British football as we know it within five years. The Glazers could destroy the whole foundation of what has been English football for the last 100 years. From what I´ve seen of them, they know nothing about United´s history or traditions or the club´s great players of the past."

£7m a week
Malcolm Glazer´s number-crunchers will arrive at Old Trafford with the mobile phone master-plan that will one day make his £790million takeover of Manchester United look like he spent just a handful of dimes. The US tycoon must wait two years until he can put his phenomenal global operation into service. But a decade from now, predicts a top City analyst, Glazer and his family could be taking as much as £100m profit in the buy-out that the 76-year-old sees as a licence to print money.

Wat for at £15m shares sell-off
Old Trafford director Maurice Watkins is set to incur the wrath of Manchester United fans again by banking £15m from the sale of five million shares to Malcolm Glazer. Watkins, who had his car daubed in paint months ago by supporters angry he´d sold shares to Glazer, is thought to be the biggest shareholder amongst the Reds´ hierarchy. And it´s believed he is likely to cash in this week when the American tycoon takes another significant step towards completing his £790m takeover of the the club. With Glazer set to announce to the Stock Exchange tomorrow he´s acquired 75 per cent of the club´s shares he will move to de-list the club from the Stock Market and take United private. That would mean the shares held by individuals and institutions would be effectively worthless - and Watkins could again come under-fire.
Steve Bates, The People
Tycoon off his £790million rocker
I think Malcolm Glazer needs his head examining for spending £790million on Manchester United. He would have been better off leaving the money in the bank or investing in a chain of department stores. I could understand it if he was buying a club on the cheap with the aim of making them into a valuable asset and then selling them. But if he thinks he is going to be able to sell the club for more than he paid for it he could be in for a shock. I don´t see the business rationale in paying a very full price for a football club.

Neville set to be England skipper
Sven-Goran Eriksson has revealed Gary Neville will captain England in the opening game of their United States mini-tour - unless he can persuade Real Madrid to release David Beckham in time. Eriksson is still hoping Real will agree to let Beckham and Michael Owen join England for the first game against the United States in Chicago on May 28. That would only happen if the Spanish club had already lost out on the Spanish league title " I´m going to ask that question when or if it´s sure that Barcelona have won the Spanish league. I´ve already prepared that," said Eriksson. " Otherwise, Gary Neville will be the captain in the first game." He added: " He´s always acted like a captain anyhow! He or Sol Campbell could do it, they are the most senior and experienced players."

United to call in FIFA over Mikel
Manchester United and Norwegian club FC Lyn Oslo are preparing to file and official complaint with FIFA tomorrow in an escalation of the tug-of-war with Chelsea over Nigerian teenager John Obi Mikel. The Norway FA have contacted Obi and the agents with him in London to demand he returns to Lyn and fulfils his contract. If Chelsea fail to contact the Norwegian club they will face a FIFA investigation into their conduct and the roles of agents Rune Hauge, Jerome Anderson and John Shittu in the row. Chelsea believe that Lyn had no right to sell Obi to Manchester United last month because of a contract the player had with Hauge.

Hard line is only way to stop Henry, says Brown
Wes Brown may not be one of football’s thuggish breed but he is well aware of what will be required when he takes on Arsenal’s Thierry Henry in Saturday’s FA Cup final. “You cannot be soft,” said Brown. “You have to be physical, but also controlled. If the ball is there to be won, you have to win it. Arsenal may have complained about us being too physical but that’s the basis of our game. I think it will be the same message again. We won’t change.”

Fergie holds key to another classic
Arsene Wenger is hoping Saturday’s FA Cup final will be a repeat of the thrilling 1979 showdown between Arsenal and Manchester United. But the Gunners manager believes referee Rob Styles will have to stop United spoiling the showpiece for that to happen. Wenger said: “I think the first game against United this season was bad publicity for English football. No matter how they approach the game, I feel it’s down to the referee to make the rules respected. I think it’s fair to say we had a sense of injustice after the Old Trafford game. But we will be faithful to the way we play football and of course we want to win this final.”

We can´t afford another season like this - Wes
Wes Brown last night surveyed the sad wreckage of Manchester United´s miserable season and vowed: " We must never allow this to happen again." United crashed in Europe and flopped in the Premiership, so Brown is desperate to salvage some pride by lifting the FA Cup on Saturday. He said: " We all know we have under-achieved in the Premiership this season. But it has focused our minds and we know we´ll have to be better from the start next season."

Injury rules out Henry and Reyes
Arsene Wenger was dealt a devastating FA Cup Final blow last night when Thierry Henry and Jose Antonio Reyes limped out of training. And both Arsenal superstars are major doubts for Saturday´s showdown with Manchester United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Indeed, Henry - who has only just returned to action following a five-match lay-off with a groin injury - told team-mates his season was over. Reyes, who took a heavy kick on his ankle at Highbury in midweek, felt a problem in a session at Arsenal´s training ground ahead of the Gunners´ Premiership finale at Birmingham today.

Send message of tough luck to Fergie
Oone-time waiter Julian Senderos has served up no tastier dish than his Arsenal defender son Philippe. The lad is only 20, but he speaks three languages and is heading for an FA Cup Final encounter with Manchester United next Saturday. And that, according to dad, adds a nice dash of spice to the big occasion. Telling Philippe´s story for the first time, Spaniard Julian revealed: " Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign him. We spent two days in Manchester at their invitation. Alex even told me to drop the Sir and just call him by his first name. And I was a United fan. I was waiting tables in Newquay, Cornwall when England won the World Cup in 1966. But Philippe loved the way Arsenal played. One of his heroes is Thierry Henry and, in the end, we sent Alex a fax thanking him for the way we´d been treated, but saying no."

Neville set for England captaincy
Manchester United defender Gary Neville is on standby to captain England in the first match of their tour to the US.
Neville will take the armband against the USA on 28 May if Real Madrid refuse to release England skipper David Beckham and vice-captain Michael Owen.
Sven-Goran Eriksson plans to ask Real to let the pair go now that Barcelona have clinched the Spanish title.
Meanwhile, Eriksson has placed Spurs´ Michael Dawson and West Brom´s KIERAN RICHARDSON on standby for the squad.
Eriksson added: " We have two players on standby - Michael Dawson, who had one training session with us a couple of years ago - and Kieran Richardson, who has had a very good season at West Brom ( on loan from Manchester United).
" They are both interesting players and I didn´t want to put any senior players on standby"

Glazer to back Man Utd boss Ferguson to beat Chelsea for Essien
American billionaire Malcolm Glazer is expected to seek to win Manchester United fans over by making a major blow against rivals Chelsea in the summer market.
Glazer knows Chelsea are locked in talks with Olympique Lyon for midfield ace Mickael Essien and would love to bring the Ghanaian to Old Trafford to show supporters he is serious about bringing success to the club.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking Essien for much of the season and knows he´d favour a move to Old Trafford over Stamford Bridge. But until Glazer´s takeover, Fergie didn´t have the funds to match Chelsea in the bidding for the African.
Lyon are asking £18 million for Essien and Glazer is ready to back Fergie´s ambition to bring a youngster, many see as Roy Keane´s potential successor, to United over the summer.

Real Madrid launch £21M bid for Man Utd´s Ferdinand
Real Madrid have launched a £21 million bid for Manchester Unietd defender Rio Ferdinand.
The News of the World says Real´s marketing director, Jose Angel Sanchez, flew to Manchester last week in a bid to exploit the turmoil surrounding Malcolm Glazer´s controversial takeover.
Ferdinand has two years left on his contract and has angered boss Sir Alex Ferguson over his reluctance to sign a new four-year deal worth £100,000 a week.
Sanchez has closed the deals for David Beckham from Manchester United and Michael Owen at Liverpool over the last two years.
