Fergie eyes on Ballack
Sir Alex Ferguson wants Bayern Munich captain Michael Ballack to be his new midfield general. The German ace is seen as the player to fill Roy Keane´s boots at Old Trafford. The 28-year-old, who is under contract for one more year at Bayern, caught the eye of Ferguson when his former club Bayer Leverkusen beat United in the Champions League semi-final three years ago. The United boss would love to bring the German star to England - although the uncertainty over Malcolm Glazer´s long-running power struggle for the club could scupper a move.

Ferdinand to defy Sir Alex over contract ultimatum
Rio Ferdinand is ready to defy Sir Alex Fegruson and delay further talks over a new contract until the end of the season. It emerged yesterday that the Manchester United´s defender´s agent, Pini Zahavi, is not scheduled to meet the club´s chief executive, David Gill, until after the final round of Premiership matches on Sunday week. Although the £28million England defender says he wants to commit to United, his stance will not help his deteriorating relationship with Ferguson.

Title race starts now
Manchester United have warned Chelsea they are already planning their title revenge. Alex Ferguson’s men aim to make a statement of intent ahead of the 2005-06 campaign by beating the new Premiership kings at Old Trafford next Tuesday. They do not believe the gap in class is as big as Blues boss Jose Mourinho may think. And United midfielder Darren Fletcher insists all their players are charged up to prove it next week. Fletcher, 21, said: “It is definitely a chance to put down a marker. We are looking to get a little psychological edge over them ahead of the start of next season. To get a good result and good performance against Chelsea and then win the FA Cup could have a bearing on the beginning of the new season.”

´Tap´ probe deals a Cup blow to Cole
Arsenal´s preparations for the FA Cup final against Manchester United have been thrown into further chaos with the news that Ashley Cole will miss two days´ training before the Cardiff showdown. The hearing into the ´tapping up´ allegations involving the England defender and Chelsea will take place on May 17 and 18, just three days before the final at the Millennium Stadium.

Robbo´s Fergie booster
Alex Ferguson wants Bryan Robson’s West Brom to stay up this season — although his Manchester United side could condemn them to the drop on Saturday. The Baggies, beaten 2-0 by Arsenal on Monday, will be down if they lose at Old Trafford and if there is a positive result to the Crystal Palace-Southampton showdown. But Fergie hopes the former Red Devils star can yet steer a course to safety and make himself a managerial legend at the club where he was a playing hero a quarter of a century ago. Old Trafford chief Fergie said: “Everyone at Manchester United wants Albion to stay up. It’s an unfortunate thing but we have to try to get second place. I’ve said in my programme notes for the game that every United fan will pray they stay up because Bryan was such a fantastic player and a very popular man while he was here."

Richardson misses out
Alex Ferguson has revealed he was keen for Kieran Richardson to line up for relegation-battlers West Brom at Old Trafford on Saturday. The Manchester United midfielder has been on loan at The Hawthorns since January and Premiership rules prevent him facing his old team. But United boss Fergie said: “He can’t play against us on Saturday but I would have been happy for him to. Unfortunately, it’s not allowed. Kieran comes back to us at the end of the season and then we’ll talk to him and map out his future. But he’s got a chance. I’ve seen how he’s been doing at Albion and I’ve been very pleased.”

Lyon ace Essien excited by Man Utd experience
Lyon midfield ace Mickael Essien has hinted he sees his future in the Premiership.
The Ghana international is wanted by Manchester United and told FourFourTwo " It was wonderful to play at Old Trafford ( earlier this season).
" They are one of the biggest clubs in Europe so of course I was happy to play there, but no, I wasn´t think about my future during the game.
" I get on the pitch and only think about football.
" In England the game is based on physical strength and that´s what I like.
" I think I can adapt well, I think I have the qualities to play there and I already speak the language.
" It will be easier for me than when I arrived in France.
" I´ll be happy in England."
Essien actually had trials at United and added: " I think I did well, I don´t think I had the level to play there at the time but Sir Alex Ferguson said I had played well.
" I liked him, he´s a very good coach."
Chelsea are believed to have stepped up their interest in two of their top transfer targets - Adriano and Joaquin.
The Blues have sealed The Premiership title and their exit to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League, means they can now look ahead to next season.
Jose Mourinho is known to have compiled a sizeable list of targets, with Adriano and Joaquin understood to be amongst the priorities.
Of the two, a deal for Adriano looks the most likely to be done with talks reported to have begun over a prospective deal for the Brazilian superstar.
Internazionale currently have Juan Sebastian Veron on loan from Chelsea and also have an interest in current Milan loanee Hernan Crespo - so there is a distinct possibility that The Blues could unload a couple of their unwanted stars in order to smooth over a deal.
Inter coach Roberto Mancini is quoted as saying an offer from Stamford Bridge, although tempting, would be turned down.
" It would be a very impressive offer but a correct one considering that he is an extraordinary player," he said.
" A large offer would be worth considering from Chelsea.
" It is also true that we could use that money to buy a host of players but really Adriano is too important for us to sell."
Despite Mancini´s comments it is thought that Chelsea are prepared to offer what it takes for Adriano - who seems open to the prospect of a move to West London.
However, the same cannot be said for Joaquin who does not seem over keen on linking up with Mourinho.
The Spanish star is seen by Mourinho as the ideal man for his right sided winger role, but Joaquin seems in little hurry to leave Seville.
Mourinho is reported to have travelled to Spain in recent weeks to confirm Chelsea would be willing to pay up to €40 million for Joaquin and while Real Betis supremo Manuel Ruiz de Lopera was prepared to listen - the player wasn´t.
Betis indeed have confirmed that two other offers are on the table for Joaquin, one from an Italian club [believed to be Juventus] and one from another English side - which is reported to be Manchester United.
But, Joaquin´s heart is set on Real Madrid and their supremo Florentino Perez has kept in constant contact with Ruiz de Lopera over the past 18 months.
Joaquin is understood to be even considering a new deal at Betis, which will see him remain at the club for another 12 to 18 months - or until such time as Real require his services.
While Chelsea pursue Adriano and Joaquin, they are still monitoring other possible transfer targets.
Milan´s Kakha Kaladze has emerged as possible left back contender, while Asier Del Horno and Ashley Cole also remain realistic options.
Midfield could also be invested in by Mourinho and he already earmarked the likes of Gianluca Zambrotta, Manuel Fernandes and Xavi, while in defence much will depend on whether the likes of William Gallas and Robert Huth stay.

Mour´s in to rob Ron from Fergie
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is planning a shock summer raid on Manchester United for flying winger Cristiano Ronaldo. Mourinho has identified his fellow Portuguese as a key addition to his squad and is ready to test Old Trafford with a £20m bid. Mourinho knows he faces a real battle persuading Sir Alex Ferguson and United to part with Ronaldo. But Mouringo has a trump card in that his agent, Jorge Mendes, also represents Ronaldo.

Chelsea in bid to steal £18m Essien from Fergie
Chelsea are making an £18million bid to sign Lyon midfielder Mickael Essien from under the noses of Manchester United. Owner Roman Abramovich has given his blessing to the Premiership champions´ first major swoop of the summer and talks are at an advanced stage. Ghanaian Essien, 22, is rated the best player at the runaway leaders of the French league but has long been linked with a move to Manchester United as a long-term successor to Roy Keane. Despite the player admitting his love for United, Sir Alex Ferguson cannot compete with Chelsea´s financial muscle.
Ferdinand hints at contract deal
Rio Ferdinand has hinted he may sign a new contract at Manchester United before the end of the season.
Ferdinand, 26, has come under fire from United´s fans for a delay in signing the deal, and boss Sir Alex Ferguson has also ordered him to show loyalty.
He told BBC Sport: " It might be done before the end of the season, we will have to wait and see.
" I´m not keeping anyone guessing about this, it is just the way the situation is with these things."
Ferdinand accepts the criticism he has received after he was jeered by United supporters during the 4-0 win at Charlton.
But he said: " Each game is different, each supporter´s different, so we will wait and see."
He added: " I´m just concentrating on my football and hopefully the season will end on a more positive note with the FA Cup final against Arsenal in Cardiff."
