Sir Alex explains keeper choice
Sir Alex Ferguson has explained his decision to recall Roy Carroll to the Manchester United goal in place of Tim Howard.
Carroll is now expected to retain the keeper´s spot for the FA Cup final although Ferguson refused to confirm that the Northern Ireland international will definitely make up for the disappointment of not starting last year´s final win over Millwall.
With Howard´s poor clearance contributing to Newcastle United´s goal last weekend, through Darren Ambrose, the United manager has suggested that the American still needs to learn to keep his concentration during long periods of inactivity in games.
" It´s coming up to the final," Ferguson told Sky Sports. " Roy had a spell out, which has brought him on actually. In training sessions, he´s been fantastic.
" For Tim, it´s really about experience. He plays in games for us every week and sometimes only has one save in a game to make, and that´s the difficult part of being a keeper at our club.
" So, therefore, Roy´s experience today comes on top of Tim´s lack of experience. He needs more and more games, more to do, more action, to bring him on that step because Tim is a tremendously technically gifted keeper.
" He is lightning quick, his distribution is terrific and there are lots of good parts to Tim that will come on in the years ahead."
Ferguson stopped short of announcing Carroll will play against Arsenal in Cardiff but the Irishman needs only to perform as well as he did at Charlton to keep his place.
" What I want to do is have the two of them getting football behind them and, when it comes to final day, hope I pick the right one," he declared.
Carroll has still to agree a new contract at Old Trafford and may be leaving under the Bosman Ruling in the summer.
The Red Devils chief was also quick to pay credit to newly-crowned champions Chelsea.
" They´ve had a fantastic season and thoroughly deserve it," he stated. " To win the Premier League takes a very good team and they have been that this season.
" They´ve been worthy champions."
>> on va peut-etre garder nos 2 gardiens comme Carroll a rejouer et fera le reste de la saison, a priori.
Fergie plays down Rio saga
Sir Alex Ferguson insists he does not want to railroad Rio Ferdinand into signing a new contract, but is keen for the England defender to make a quick decision on his future.
Ferdinand has, as yet, refused to sign the new deal that Manchester United have tabled him - leading to speculation about his commitment to the club.
After revelations of clandestine meetings with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon, sections of the club´s support have grown increasingly concerned about the player´s failure to extend his contract at Old Trafford.
During the 4-0 win at Charlton Athletic on Sunday, United fans began chants urging Ferdinand to put to paper, but Ferguson has moved to try and diffuse what is becoming something of an unwanted saga.
" We don´t want to make a monster out of this thing ( Ferdinand´s deal)," Ferguson told MUTV.
" You can maybe push players into these things and you can make it worse.
" He knows we want him to sign and that´s important and he knows the fans want him to sign, so we don´t want to be shoving the lad into something he is not sure about.
" If he´s not sure then he should take time - but the most important thing is we want him to do it quickly."
Plan to ´stop Glazer Man Utd bid´
An investment bank has agreed to help Manchester United fans opposed to the possible takeover of the club by tycoon Malcolm Glazer, it has been reported.
Nomura will lend fans as much as £100m ( $191m) to finance a scheme to acquire enough stock to block any bid by the US businessman, the Sunday Times said.
Mr Glazer has been in talks with United about a potential £800m takeover bid.
On Thursday, he was given a 17 May deadline by the Takeover Panel to make known whether he plans to launch a bid.
Equity bloc
United supporters opposed to any takeover of the club fear the UK panel´s ultimatum could lead to an imminent formal bid by Mr Glazer, who owns NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the US.
Fan group Shareholders United has written to the club´s 30,000 individual shareholders - who hold about 18% of United´s shares - asking if they would be willing to join an investment trust, the Sunday Times said.
It would aim to create an equity bloc in the hands of supporters.
The Sunday Times said Nomura was prepared to lend on a £1-for-£1 basis, meaning that for every £1 of shares or cash committed to the supporters-run trust, Nomura would lend it the same amount.
A spokesman for Shareholders United confirmed the plan.
The dividend paid by United´s board to shareholders would be used to pay off the money lent to the trust by Nomura, the newspaper said.
Strict deadline
" Our interest is in helping supporters protect the club from predators," Gary Wilder, head of Nomura´s Asset Finance Group, told the Sunday Times.
" However, we can only move forward if supporters show they are interested."
If Mr Glazer chooses not to bid for Manchester United by the 17 May deadline imposed by the Takeover Panel, he will not be permitted to make an approach for the club for another six months.
Separately, Shareholders United has written to the club´s biggest shareholders offering to buy their stakes in an effort to block any bid by Mr Glazer, FT.com reported.
The supporters group has approached Cubic Expression, which holds 28.9% of United´s shares and is owned by Irish businessmen John Magnier and JP McManus, the Financial Times´ website reported.
Shareholders United owns about 2% of the club´s shares, while Mr Glazer has a 28.1% stake.
PSV confirm van Bommel exit
PSV Eindhoven have confirmed Mark van Bommel will leave the club but are uncertain if the midfielder has agreed to join Barcelona.
Van Bommel´s contract at Philips Stadion expires in the summer and he has long been expected to leave the Dutch champions on a free transfer.
Barcelona have been perennial favourites to sign the 28-year-old, despite interest from the likes of Milan, Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.
The Catalan outfit´s president Joan Laporta claimed over the weekend that van Bommel has agreed, in principle, to move to Camp Nou next season.
But while PSV have now acknowledged van Bommel is quitting Eindhoven, they are unsure who the talismanic midfielder will join.
" He hasn´t confirmed anything himself yet," PSV president Rob Westerhof told Sky Sports News.
" I suppose that he will be going either to Barcelona or one of the other big European teams that have been mentioned.
" It´s a pity but I can understand him. He is 28 and he will make a lot of money but we hope that he will come back three or four years later to PSV.
" He´s definitely leaving, that´s what he has told us. It´s not a matter that he wanted to leave but, from his perspective, he can play for one of the great European teams.
" We will know in a few weeks whether the Barcelona story is true or not."
Westerhof also confirmed that Manchester United have been watching van Bommel and outlined the qualities the Holland international will bring to his new club.
He added: " I saw Alex Ferguson watching him and several other clubs.
" You never know how far that has gone as his manager has been very quiet all the time about which way it´s going.
" Van Bommel is a player who would be of interest to any top club. He makes goals, controls the midfield, is dangerous and is a little bit of a nasty player in a positive way, like Roy Keane."
>> Le président du Psv dit qu´on etait interessé par van Bommel, c´est a ce demandé pourquoi il parle de nous alors que le Barça annonce sa venue prochaine.
Le Barça avait aussi annoncé avoir signé Edu mais finalement pas encore fait, Lyon avait soi disant signé Nonda, le PSG Essien, MU devait avoir Ronaldinho...Tant que rien n´est signé faut se méfier maintenant ^^
Nardiello ready for Tykes talks
Daniel Nardiello is hoping he can clinch a permanent deal with Barnsley, with talks due to commence this week.
The striker is spending the season on loan at Oakwell from Manchester United and has scored seven goals, including one in each of his last four appearances.
Tykes boss Andy Ritchie is keen to hold onto Nardiello and has already persuaded United to sanction a free transfer deal.
Nardiello has been unable to make the breakthrough at Old Trafford and he has relished the chance to play regular football in League One.
He admits he is willing to stay with Barnsley and will happily pen a permanent deal if suitable terms can be agreed.
" My agent will be going to see the Barnsley chairman next week to see what the club is offering me," said the 22-year-old.
" Hopefully it will be sorted out and I will be here next season.
" I´m keen to stay. I´ve loved it here and if the contract is right I will definitely be staying."
c´est quoi cette blague l´an prochain on va jouer avec les 2 boulets comme gardien ? ?
ce qui s´est passé cette saison n´a pas suffi ? ??
United fans boo Rio
Rio Ferdinand was booed by his OWN fans as Manchester United outclassed Charlton. The England defender, spotted meeting Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon last month, is stalling on a new contract after demanding a £120,000-a-week deal. United boss Alex Ferguson said: “It does not sit easily with the fans of this club if players are not signing new contracts. The supporters deserve a decision. I think we’ll get the outcome we want because I think Rio wants to stay — but you never know what advice he’s getting. If his agent says no, we will not be panicked into selling. We will make him see out the remaining two years of his contract.”

Charlton 0 United 4
Paul Scholes was lucky to escape a red card and a Cup final ban as United routed Charlton at The Valley. The Man U midfielder was only cautioned by referee Dermot Gallagher for an X-rated two-footed tackle on Dennis Rommedahl midway through the first half. Scholes - just back from suspension - would have missed United´s clash with Arsenal in Cardiff had he been sent off. But Gallagher decided to be lenient after being surrounded by half a dozen of Sir Alex Ferguson´s foot soldiers. United were already one-up through Scholes and coasting by that stage. Scholes made the most of his reprieve to set up Darren Fletcher for a second just before the break and Alan Smith and Wayne Rooney added further goals in the second half as United ran riot.

Keep the title, we’d rather have Wayne
Wayne Rooney delivered a stunning virtuoso display to remind Chelsea that they may have won the Premiership title but Manchester United have still got their hands on English football´s most outstanding talent. Rooney rounded off a brilliant man-of-the-match display by finishing a fantastic five-man move as he and United won with such style that it was almost as if they were intent on reminding the newly-crowned champions that they are still around. And not only did Rooney score, he also helped set up Paul Scholes and Darren Fletcher - while Alan Smith also netted in the rout.

Lamps: We’re out of your league
Frank Lampard last night taunted Arsenal and Manchester United as he claimed that Chelsea had shown just why they are the finest team in the land. Lampard´s double at Bolton sealed the Blues´ first title in 50 years and Lamps was adamant that Jose Mourinho´s men had proved why they are streets ahead of their closest rivals in the Premiership and that it was time for United and the Gunners to accept their change in status. Lampard said: " We´ve proved that the best team wins the league. There have been some harsh words spoken about us not being entertaining and that the best two teams in the Premier League are in the final of the FA Cup. But the best team wins the league and we have done that. You look at Arsenal who lost at Bolton and Manchester United who drew, but we went up there and won. It´s time for the others to take a look and know that we are definitely the best."

Round-up by Gemma Thompson.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta is preparing to bid for Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy at the end of the season.
The Dutchman would command a massive transfer fee and Laporta is ready to use Barca´s imminent shirt sponsorship deal to fund a bid in the summer. The Spanish giants are set to secure an agreement with an unnamed company worth a massive £15 million for the first season.
Laporta met with Van Nistelrooy´s agents last summer, but was priced out of a move for the striker due to United´s £25 million valuation.
DiarioSport says Van Nistelrooy is convinced his time in England is coming to an end and is seeking a fresh challenge. While Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has mad him aware of their interest, Van Nistelrooy favours Barca. He doesn´t want to face another season on the outer behind Ronaldo.
Van Nistelrooy also has a good relationship with Barca coach Frank Rijkaard and knows he would be guaranteed a regular start alongside Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto´o in attack.
