United to Hijack Van Bommel Bid?

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

Manchester United have been rumoured to block Barcelona´s attempt to sign PSV Eindhoven star Mark van Bommel as the Red Devils look to shake up the midfield for next season.

Many fans and pundits have doubted the fitness of skipper Roy Keane, who is set to retire from professional football within the next few seasons. The Irishman has changed his mind about his future at Old Trafford many times over the past few seasons and months.

Sir Alex Ferguson´s attempts to sign a replacement for Keane have proven unsuccessful. Eric Djemba-Djemba, seen as the next Roy Keane, was offloaded to Aston Villa earlier this term and there have been doubts about Kleberson´s and Liam Miller´s future as a Red Devil.

Dutch international Van Bommel is available on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven, and La Liga leaders Barcelona are to sealing a deal, despite the efforts of Tottenham Hotspur.

However, with the disappointment of an early Champions League exit and falling behind in the Premiership, and with a lack of reasources, Van Bommel is a prime summer transfer target.

Fergie to clarify comments

The Football Association have called on Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to clarify his remarks regarding penalties they have not won.

Fergie was fuming United failed to win a penalty when Newcastle´s Andy O´Brien clashed with Alan Smith on Sunday only for referee Neale Barry to wave play on.

The Red Devils´ boss feels the side have struggled to win spot-kicks after Ruud van Nistelrooy netted against Arsenal when Wayne Rooney went down under a challenge by Sol Campbell.

Ferguson thinks the club are now being victimised and that one of his players would need to be shot in order for an official to give the side a penalty.

" It is getting ridiculous now. I am not sure if they are instructed but it is looking sinister to me," said Ferguson to MUTV.

" That is the same referee [Barry] who gave Portsmouth a penalty against us for the slightest tug by Rio Ferdinand and also denied us an absolute certainty when Louis Saha was fouled at Chelsea.

" Since that penalty kick against Arsenal, it seems to me we are not going to get another one, no matter what the circumstances.

" One of our players will need to get shot for us to get one."

Scholes laments form

Paul Scholes believes his form for Manchester United has been below expectations this season.

The 30-year-old, who retired from international duty following Euro 2004, had hoped to maintain his consistency with only club football on his mind.

Scholes´ main threat is his ability to chip in with goals, but the attacking midfielder has failed to hit the ten-goal mark in The Premiership despite recent strikes.

" My performances in the league this year have not been great," he told the club´s official magazine.

" I have scored 10 goals but it took me a while to get off the mark and overall I should probably be doing a lot better."

With United out of the title race Scholes has admitted he has not enjoyed the season due to the side´s inability to claim silverware.

" You always enjoy the season more if you are winning things," he said.

" In the league we paid the price for not having the best of starts and in the Champions League we just didn´t play well enough.

" Winning the FA Cup would be a decent prize at the end of the season and I will feel a lot better if we win it, but at this club we do expect more than that."

Fletcher searching for gym and tonic

--------------------------------------------------
------------------------------

DARREN Fletcher will beef up his claims for a regular role in Manchester United´s midfield with a working summer in the gym.

Once again, the close season break is upon the Scottish international quicker than he wanted.

Just 12 months ago, Fletcher had an impressive end to his personal campaign with major impacts in both the FA Cup semi-final with Arsenal and victory in the final against Millwall.

And now, following an injury-fragmented season, he´s back competing for Sir Alex Ferguson´s late-term nod in the Reds´ engine room.

Last summer his hopes of working on his game were shot to pieces by an ankle injury playing for Scotland in a friendly against Trinidad.

This time he intends to keep to a strict gym schedule.

" The break is going to come too early again for me but, fingers crossed, I will have a good summer this time and be able to utilize it," says the 21-year-old.

Stamina

" I shall be doing weights and build up my stamina and push on next year. I am filling out slowly but surely. Our weights man, Mike Clegg says my physique may not look that strong but to play against me is a different story and a few of the players have said that.

" I have had to deal with a smaller physique all my life and you learn to deal with it and use your body in different ways to counteract it. There was a worry when I was younger that I might be brushed off the ball too easily, but I don´t think it has ever really happened.

" The Premier League is physical but I haven´t really been knocked out of possession a lot.

" I don´t feel weak or anything like that, but I still want to build myself up. If I can get the physical aspect better as well then it will add a new dimension to my game."

Fletcher added: " If you stand still for a second at this club then someone will take your place because of the quality we have and the way the manager is always looking to strengthen the squad in the transfer market.

" If he sees an area of the team that has stalled or not improved then he´ll be quick to sort it out.

" No matter what level you are at or age, you have to show you are improving.

" You work to be better than anybody else out there so the manager doesn´t replace you. It keeps you on the top of your game."

Glazer gets United deadline

Manchester United have handed Malcolm Glazer a deadline to announce whether he intends to buy the club.

The American tycoon has been seeking to buy the Old Trafford for some time only for his attempts to be rebuffed.

Glazer has handed over detailed proposals for a possible takeover in February but the club stated they were unlikely to accept the American´s offer.

Now the takeover panel have set a deadline on May 17 for Glazer to disclose whether or not he is to pursue a takeover of the club´s plc .

A statement from the club read: " The board of Manchester United plc welcomes the announcement by the takeover panel of a deadline of May 17, 2005 for the Glazer Family Limited Partnership either to announce a firm intention to make an offer for the company under rule 2.5 of the city code or to announce that it does not intend to make an offer for the company."

" The board remains of the view that the assumptions in the Glazer business plan are aggressive.

" The board recognises, however, that the price of 300p per share is a fair one and may be attractive to some shareholders of Manchester United.

" Given the board´s concerns about the potential impact of the proposal on the company, the board has informed Glazer that it cannot provide a recommendation to shareholders to accept any offer made on the basis of the current proposal."

If Glazer does not make an offer he will not be allowed to make another one for six months.

SI il est gratuit, pourquoi pas, pour deux saisons...Faut pas oublier que cet été on a un buget limité, alors des joueurs libres c´est toujours intéressant, Figo ou Van Bommel ça permettrait d´attendre un peu ^^
