benjusqu´a declaration contraire pas de thunes
Owen is bait for Van man
Michael Owen could be on his way to Manchester United — in a trade that would take Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid. Sources in Spain say Real are ready to offer Owen as bait to convince United boss Alex Ferguson to part with his Dutch striker. Van Nistelrooy´s agent Rodger Linse is reported as quoting a £12million fee for the Holland ace.

Keane must get my job
Alex Ferguson has told the Manchester United board he wants Roy Keane to be the next manager — instead of assistant Carlos Queiroz. SunSport revealed last week there was a revolt in the United camp over Queiroz’s increasing influence on the first team. But the choice of skipper Keane will meet with great approval. Boss Fergie insists he will go on for at least one more campaign. He said: " I will carry on at United next season and I have a contract to do that. But when I do move I would like to see Roy Keane taking over. He is a leader on the pitch and could be that kind of leader sitting on the United bench too."

Jose has got it easy, says Fergie
Alex Ferguson last night told Jose Mourinho: You’ve got it easy. The Manchester United manager insists he has to run the whole playing side of the club, while Mourinho simply coaches. " Mourinho has a completely different culture at Chelsea than I do in charge at United. I´m a mamager, not merely a coach. I make decisions about signings and I have the responsibility for the first team, plus the reserves and United Academy. It is said that Mourinho is the No.1 but at 63, I´m not jealous of my competitors and what they win."

Rio deal ´in days´
Rio Ferdinand hopes to agree a new deal at Manchester United “in days rather than weeks”. The England defender angered some United fans by letting agent Pini Zahavi go public with his £120,000- a-week demands just days after being seen with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon. Zahavi will jet back to England next week for a fresh round of talks. Boss Alex Ferguson wants his star to sign an extension to his current deal, which expires in 2007. Ferdinand, 26, said: “Negotiations do not happen overnight. We will keep going and, fingers crossed, it will be over in days rather than weeks.”

Striker light! £3.5m per goal
They cost £70million to recruit but Manchester United´s star-studded strike force has been put in the shade by Andy Johnson. The Crystal Palace forward - who cost £750,000 - is in a team staring relegation in the face, yet his 19 league goals this season is the same number Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Louis Saha have managed between them. It is a statistic that highlights what has been United´s biggest problem in the Premiership this campaign - scoring goals. They have only 48 from 33 league games, and just 19 of them came from their much-vaunted strikers - a cost of £3.56m a goal. Arsenal have 73 goals and Chelsea 62. United are on course for their lowest goals tally since the dark days of 1990 when Sir Alex Ferguson almost lost his job as manager. The defeat at Everton on Wednesday was the 10th time they have failed to score in the league this season.

Give to stay with Toon
Shay Given last night gave nervous Newcastle a massive boost by insisting: I’m staying. Toon officials feared the Republic of Ireland keeper would be on his way as Manchester United and Arsenal prepared to scrap it out for the £6million-rated stopper this summer. But despite Newcastle crashing out of the UEFA and FA Cups last week, Given, 28, confirmed he was happy to remain in the North East. He said: “I have two years left on my contract and I am very happy to stay here, unless someone tells me different. I will ignore the speculation. The manager has said he will strengthen the squad in the summer and that there will be good times. I will be here next season."

don´t blame yourself!
Wayne Rooney is disappointed with the way his first season at Manchester United is turning out, saying he should have scored more goals for The Red Devils.
United´s season seems to be fizzling out and a lack of goalscoring ability seems to be the main factor behind their sluggish progress.
Despite banging four past Newcastle in the FA Cup semi-final, Sir Alex Ferguson´s side have scored just one goal in their last five Premiership encounters.
Wednesday´s 1-0 defeat at Everton highlighted United´s current scoring problems, with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rooney struggling to find the net.
The injury-hit Dutch marksman has struggled all season domestically with just four goals to his name, but Rooney has shouldered the main responsibility for United´s recent poor run.
The 19-year-old is bitterly disappointed at his goals return, having failed to score in his last eight games, and says he should be banging in more goals.
" Obviously I would have liked to have scored more goals than I have scored," Rooney told the club´s official magazine.
" I´ve had chances where I should have scored and didn´t or where I´ve been a bit unlucky, like against Blackburn when I hit the post.
" I cost a lot of money and with any player brought in to a new club there are always expectations to do well. If you´re not performing well, you will get told.
" It has been a disappointing season here at Manchester United.
" You can´t perform one week and not the next. I came to this club to play in the Champions League and win things.
" The last thing I won was the Sunday League with Copplehouse Under-13s. It still has pride of place at home but I want to win trophies here."
Il va se venger en finale de la Cup ^^
Sir Alex Ferguson has vehemently denied claims that United have been hawking Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy around other clubs with a view to a summer sale.
Friday´s tabloids linked the forward with swap deals involving La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, with Michael Owen and Carlos Puyol named as potential targets.
However, Sir Alex said: " It´s such rubbish that we would be touting the best centre-forward in Europe [to other clubs]. It´s beyond words and barely worth commenting on.
" It´s one of the unfortunate aspects of the job here that you have to deny and refute stories every week. It´s because we are big news.
" We have not been touting Ruud. There is no chance of us touting Ruud. That´s the matter finished."
Ferguson also took time to counter claims that he had recommended Roy Keane as his eventual replacement as United boss.
The Scot flatly denied making comments attributed to him, saying: It´s absolute nonsense. I wouldn´t presume to have the authority to make these decisions anyway.
" What I have said, and have always said, is that Roy Keane could become a manager. I think that will come eventually if he wants it to. Not everyone wants to be a manager.
" Roy has been taking his coaching badges and that is straight forward, there is nothing unusual about that. But, it´s like everything else nowadays, everything gets spun out of proportion.
He added: " That´s what you are faced with. Some of the quotes in the papers were taken from a press day eight weeks ago. It was attended by the world media but it´s been spun out of control."
For now, Sir Alex wants Keane to focus on his role within the club as captain and player. Ferguson continued: " He´s the captain and a player here. All the things about his future are entirely up to Roy; whether he wants go into management or not. Not everyone wants to do that. It´s entirely up to him."
Despite a disappointing season by United´s standards, the Reds boss says his passion for the job remains as strong as ever.
When confronted with the proposition that his enthusiasm for the job does not appear to be diminishing, Ferguson responded: " Not at all. It´s always a challenge at this club. It will always be a challenge.
" That´s the great thing about it. It´s like with the players, we have to get up off the ground after the defeat on Wednesday and win the next match. That´s the great beauty of Manchester United. There is always the challenge of the next game."

Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to carry on as manager at Manchester United - but says Roy Keane could take over his job when he eventually steps down.
But when the fiery Scot does go, who is the frontrunner to step into his shoes?
Bookies have slashed the odds on Keane´s chances of landing one of football´s biggest jobs - but does he have the experience?
BBC Sport examines who is the best-placed candidate to take Fergie´s crown.

------------------------------
MARTIN O´NEILL - ODDS 15/8 FAV
The affable Northern Irishman has spent five years at Celtic and has won three Scottish Premier League titles with a fourth possible this term.
With Celtic unlikely to become a force in the Champions League, the ambitious O´Neill may decide it will soon be time to move on with Manchester a likely destination.
O´Neill´s stock remains high and he is the clear favourite to succeed Ferguson.
CARLOS QUEIROZ - ODDS 9/2
Carlos Queiroz has endured a rollercoaster ride in the last two years.
He has a fantastic CV, having coached his home country Portugal as well as Sporting Lisbon, New York/New Jersey MetroStars, Grampus Eight of Japan and the South Africa national team.
Queiroz was on a high after being appointed Real Madrid coach two years ago but his reign in Spain was shortlived and he was sacked after just one season.
Now back at Old Trafford as number two, the multi-lingual modern coach is second favourite and was previously tipped by Ferguson to succeed him.
ROY KEANE - ODDS 5/1
Roy Keane was at the pinnacle of his playing career two years ago when United claimed their eighth title in 11 years.
The captain´s deal ends next summer and he has already begun the process of obtaining his Uefa coaching qualifications.
Now Ferguson has said the 33-year-old could replace him when he steps down and his odds have been slashed from 25/1 to third favourite.
DAVID MOYES - ODDS 10/1
In many ways, the Everton manager is a younger version of Ferguson.
The Scot, who enjoyed a touchline spat with Ferguson this week, lifted Everton to a seventh-placed finish in the Premiership two years ago.
Moyes tasted tougher times last season when the Toffees finished just one place off the relegation zone, but he has inspired them since the sale of Wayne Rooney to United and they are now on the brink of Champions League qualification.
Ferguson speaks highly of Moyes and he must have a realistic chance of replacing him.
STEVE McCLAREN - ODDS 20/1
Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren was Ferguson´s number two before he went solo on Teesside.
Boro have finished 11th two seasons running and won the Carling Cup in 2004.
McClaren, who played in the lower divisions, saw his stock rise when he was appointed England assistant coach last year, but he remains an outsider for the post.
BRYAN ROBSON - ODDS 25/1
Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson is still highly regarded by the Red Devils but he has yet to prove himself as a top-flight manager.
He was rock-bottom when he took Bradford City into League One last season after just seven wins as Bantams boss.
But Robson has inspired West Brom who now have a chance of pulling off the greatest escape in Premiership history.
Although his stock has risen dramatically in recent months, he remains well off the pace to succeed Ferguson.
THE OTHERS
There are plenty of other potential Old Trafford managers, including these with their latest odds from William Hill.
Steve Bruce - 10/1
Sven-Goran Eriksson - 14/1
Mark Hughes - 14/1
Fabio Capello - 20/1
Alan Curbishley 25/1
Insight: Carlos Queiroz

Here, in a unique insight into the way Carlos works, United´s No.2 highlights the crucial qualities required at Manchester United...
LEADERSHIP IS ALL ABOUT LEADING BY EXAMPLE
First of all you need to have the expertise of the game; secondly the leadership qualities. You need to be a role model and have passion – you must, through your work process and your ideas, win respect and credibility and you only can do that if the quality of your work, the quality of your management, shows on a daily basis. If you do that, you can make your players better players and better people, and create the right environment and right atmosphere to win the trophies that everyone expects
FOLLOW YOUR INSTINCTS
I believe that sometimes when you follow your instincts you find the right track to be in your life. I was born in a sport environment, which helps a lot. My father was a football player and a coach and I think that guided me… sometimes these things you have inside you.
YOUNG TALENT IS THE SECRET FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE
When I arrived here the first time, it was a team that was established for some years playing together. This time it is different. Young players have come in, new additions to the squad since I left – Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith. When I arrived here it was Rio Ferdinand, just one player that brought a big impact to the defensive line, but two years later we talk about a new team, a special, very young squad that creates a huge hope in terms of what we can achieve in the coming years. If you look at our defensive line we have fantastic players who are in their twenties, whereas Milan has a defensive line with players that are 35, 36 years old. You can imagine that in four, five, six years’ time, Mikael Silvestre, Ferdinand, Wes Brown, John O’Shea, Gabriel Heinze… all these players will have been playing together all those years. We have a fantastic group of players and the expectations for the future are enormous.
