United target flattered

Racing Santander midfielder Anderson Silva has told skysports.com that he is aware of interest from Manchester United.

Anderson has emerged as a summer target for The Red Devils, with the club´s scout Martin Ferguson watching the Brazilian three times of late.

Reports claim Ferguson has been very impressed by the anchor man and has passed on favourable comments to his brother - United manager Sir Alex.

The United boss is chasing reinforcements to his squad at the end of the season and Anderson has been mooted as a potential long-term successor to Roy Keane.

His impending availability on a free transfer would also attract Ferguson, who will have limited funds to spend in the summer.

But while the 23-year-old has acknowledged the interest from Old Trafford, he admits he has yet to engage in talks with the FA Cup finalists, despite rumours of a meeting between Martin Ferguson and his agent.

" Manchester United have still not spoken with me," Anderson told skysports.com.

" I know that they are interested and follow my matches but I await news."

Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have also been linked with Anderson, who has spent two seasons with Racing.

He is honoured to have been mooted as a target for The Red Devils but is not getting swept away by the interest from the Premiership giants.

Anderson added: " In the world of football there exist little clubs with our history and quality.

" Logically, it is sensational that United think about me but I do not want to be crazy and I only think about the reality."

The defensive midfielder also suggested he would be willing to play in England by saying: " Next to La Liga, The Premiership is the best league in the world."

Fletcher key for Fergie

Darren Fletcher made his comeback from injury in Manchester United´s comfortable 4-1 FA Cup semi-final win over Newcastle United and has earned a glowing endorsement from Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Scotland international is one of his manager´s personal favourites and looks certain to start Wednesday´s live Sky Sports clash at Everton.

Although looking sharp against a beaten Magpies side, Fletcher will probably be a little embarrassed by Ferguson´s kind words in the wake of the Millennium Stadium success.

" People look at Darren as an up-and-coming young player but they do not understand how important he is to our team," stated the United chief.

" He has been missing for eight weeks and, during that time, our results have altered and we have lost the midfield dominance we were enjoying.

" I couldn´t get him off the bench quick enough yesterday and, once we got him there, I couldn´t wait to give him some football again."

The 21-year-old is already looking to cement a starting spot for the final against Arsenal after playing against Millwall in Cardiff last year.

" I am just glad to be back," he said after recovering from the Achilles problem he suffered in the derby defeat of Manchester City.

" Hopefully I can get some league games under my belt and try and get in the side for the final.

" I want a second winner´s medal. That´s my aim.

" It gives us something to look forward to at the end of the season.

" For my part, I am just trying to establish myself in each game.

" This is a great team with great players and you are learning all the time."

Fletcher will be desperate to have an injury-free end to the campaign as he bids to continue making an impact at Old Trafford.

Meme si je prefere Essien, Diarra me va parfaitement ^^

Zahavi: Rio deserves more

Pini Zahavi has challenged Manchester United to make Rio Ferdinand the best paid defender in world football.

Ferdinand is discussing a new contract with The Red Devils, with the spectre of his accidental meeting with Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon having cast a shadow over the talks.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson revealed over the weekend that he believes a deal to keep Ferdinand at Old Trafford is close to completion.

But while the centre half´s agent Zahavi admits the England international wants to stay with The Red Devils, he insists Ferdinand deserves a major pay rise.

" Rio loves it in Manchester and wants to stay there but it depends on United, not on him, whether that happens," Zahavi told The Sun.

" He is ready to go a long way to make sure it does but everybody has to give a little. It´s called negotiation.

" Rio is the best central defender in the world and will be much better in the coming years.

" Rio deserves to earn, if not more than the other top central defenders in the world, at least the same."

Amid the reports of Ferdinand´s meeting with former United supremo Kenyon at a London restaurant over a week ago, Zahavi denied the stopper wants to move to Stamford Bridge.

He reiterated the stance that the 26-year-old sees his future at Old Trafford, particularly if Ferguson remains at the helm.

Zahavi added: " Both me and Rio would be very happy and would prefer Alex to be the manager but we understand we cannot control that side of Manchester United.

" Rio cannot see himself playing for another club and I can assure everyone that Chelsea is not on the agenda.

" We are focusing on staying at United. We hope very, very much to conclude an agreement in the next couple of weeks.

" But if we don´t Rio will see out the two years of his contract unless United choose to sell him."

IKER REITERATES REAL PLAN

Iker Casillas has reiterated he has no intention of leaving Real Madrid for Manchester United.

Spain´s number one has been touted as a summer target for United but is waiting for Real to offer him fresh terms so he can commit his future to the capital club.

When quizzed on his future by As, Casillas was adamant he has no great desire to head for Manchester.

" My idea is to remain with Real Madrid," he stated. " I know it clearly but they have to call me and tell me they want me to continue at the club.

" I cannot do anything more than to continue working hard and helping the team, and I expect that the club will tell me they are happy with me.

" What happens is many things are spoken. It has also been said that I am going to Manchester. It´s normal.

" I thank Manchester for their interest but I want to remain here. I have already said it."

Gines Carvajal, the keeper´s agent, has urged Real supremo Florentino Perez to commence contract talks with his client, whose present deal expires in 2006.

" Still we do not know what Mr Perez will tell us," Carvajal told El Mundo Deportivo.

" I do not see Casillas in another shirt, neither does he, but that depends on another person."

I Wanted To Be Skipper Against Everton - Rooney

Wayne Rooney has revealed how he pleaded with Sir Alex Ferguson to be made captain for United´s FA Cup clash with Everton.

The in-form 19-year-old made his plea when he underlined to the Gaffer how desperate he was to play against his former side for the first time.

Rooney ignored the abuse from the home fans who once worshipped him to help United beat the Toffees 2-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Fifth Round in February.

The teenage striker, who has hit 15 goals in his debut season at Old Trafford, has now set his sights on a repeat result against Everton on Wednesday in the Premiership at Goodison.

He told the official United magazine: " There was no way that I wanted to miss that game. To go back to Goodison was special for me.

" I actually went up to the manager and said, ´You should make me captain!´ I wanted to be the captain but I´m not sure Roy would have been too happy about that!

" I had to go there sometime but to go in the FA Cup and with so many Manchester United fans there as well, it was great.

" The fans were brilliant and got behind me and it was nice to come away with a win."

The Croxteth-born striker was instrumental in United´s march into the FA Cup final as his direct running and eye for a pass helped destroy Newcastle at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday.

Now he has his eye on collecting his first medal as a professional against the Gunners in Cardiff on 21 May.

The full interview can be read in issue 154 of the official United magazine, on sale this week.

Report by Scott Faulkner, United magazine.
