Fans oppose fresh Glazer approach

Manchester United fans groups have reiterated their opposition to Malcolm Glazer´s latest takeover bid.
The US sports tycoon has tabled a fresh offer for an estimated £800m ( $1.5bn).

Shareholders United spokesman Sean Bones said: " United fans must wake up and do something before it is too late. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

" He has shown before that he doesn´t care at all about the ordinary fans, who after all are the real long-term stakeholders in their football club."

The club´s chief executive David Gill and the rest of the board will now examine the American´s revised offer.

The latest proposal of £3 a share is believed to include some alterations to the level of debt being put forward to fund the purchase.

But Bones added: " He risks plunging United into a financial meltdown which would make Leeds look like the equivalent of missing an HP payment on the telly.

" It is nothing more than an opportunistic attempt by Malcolm Glazer to make personal gain from an institution which is loved and respected throughout the world, by someone who has no interest in, or respect for the heritage of the club."

Independent Manchester United Supporters´ Association spokesman Mark Longden added: " This talk of a £20m sweetener is a total con.

" He is borrowing the money anyway, so it is the supporters who will have to pay that back.

" And as for more of the debt being in his name, once he bought Manchester United, it would be regarded as an asset just like his caravan parks in Florida.

" If he couldn´t pay back the money he owed, the club would be sold off just like everything else."

Greg Dyke, the former Director General of the BBC and ex-Manchester United director, told BBC Radio 5 Live: " If the proposals contain a very large amount of debt it could endanger the whole future of Manchester United as a football club.

" Rumour has it Glazer is planning to borrow £300m to pay for the assets of the club, I´m not sure Manchester United can afford that.

" If you buy borrow £300m it means you will have to pay £25m a year in interest.

" If Manchester United do not qualify for the Champions League they get no money at all, if they don´t qualify for three or four years it is very bad news. The banks want their money.

" A recent example of this is Leeds who borrowed far less than £300m on the basis of future success. They failed to get the success and had to sell virtually all the assets they had."

Glazer´s latest proposal is said to have a guarantee to supply Sir Alex Ferguson with a £20m summer transfer kitty and an expansion of Old Trafford, although it is unlikely that cash will persuade supporters to change sides.

" It will not be him paying the bills," added Bones. " The fans will be paying over the money that will repay his debt."

Glazer and his family have been building up their shares in the club and currently hold a 28.1% stake.

He is already the owner of NFL side the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Ferguson puts gloss back on Cup

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes winning the FA Cup is more important than finishing second in the Premiership table behind Chelsea.

United must enter the Champions League qualifying stages if they fail to edge Arsenal out of second place.

But ahead of Sunday´s FA Cup semi-final against Newcastle, Ferguson said: " We have no chance in the league because Chelsea are out of sight.

" And while we want to finish second, winning the FA Cup is more important."

Failure to land the runners-up spot behind Chelsea this term could cost the club £2m in European prize money.

Ferguson´s view of the FA Cup appeared to be contradicted by right-hand man Carlos Quieroz.

Quieroz´s comments came amid reports claiming United´s players want the veteran boss to take a greater control over tactics rather than let the Portuguese coach dictate affairs on the pitch.

Ferguson´s assistant told BBC GMR: " We cannot say it is a good season just because we win the FA Cup.

" The major expectation of Manchester United is to go as far as we can in Europe and our first priority is always the league.

" If we accept winning the FA Cup represents a good season, we are not at the level everybody expects us to be."

Former Manchester United director Greg Dyke believes a possible takeover by Malcolm Glazer could jeopardise the club´s long-term financial success.

Glazer, the American tycoon, is expected to make an £800m formal bid to take control of the club, with vast sums understood to be borrowed to fund the deal.

Dyke believes this puts the Old Trafford outfit at risk as the club would need Champions League qualification to pay the interest on the loan.

According to Dyke this could lead to United being in the same position as Leeds, who borrowed against future success and had to sell assets when targets were not met.

Dyke, the former Director General of the BBC, told BBC Radio 5 Live: " If they ( the proposals) contain a very large amount of debt it could endanger the whole future of Manchester United as a football club.

" Rumour has it Glazer is planning to borrow £300m to pay for the assets of the club, I´m not sure Manchester United can afford that.

" Their profits are way down because of television income. If profits are way and you´re going to pay £300m it means you can´t afford to pay the interest."

" If you buy borrow £300m it means you will have to pay £25m a year in interest. If Manchester United do not qualify for the Champions League they get no money at all, if they don´t qualify for three or four years it is very bad news. The banks want their money.

" In some businesses you can borrow because they have a predictable cash flow. Manchester United´s depends on how well they are doing. Go back a decade and they had a team which were not doing so well.

" A recent example of this is Leeds who borrowed far less than £300m on the basis of future success. They failed to get the success and had to sell virtually all the assets they had."

Giggs close to new deal

Ryan Giggs is expected to sign a new contract with Manchester United because there is no impasse in the negotiations, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United manager wants to retain the services of the Wales winger, who misses the FA Cup semi-final with a hamstring injury, despite returning to training this week.

Giggs´s appearance at Carrington surprised Ferguson but the Scot will not rush the 31-year-old back for the clash at Cardiff, in his homeland.

" Absolutely, I´m shocked," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. " All of a sudden, he came in and said he felt a bit better.

" I said let´s go and try it but we won´t be including him on Sunday.

" There´s a lot of incentives [for Giggs to play] but you´ve got to be realistic. A hamstring is a hamstring.

" This has been going on all the time really," he said of the contract talks. " It´s unfair.

" Of course we´ve been negotiating and talking to him but nothing like the press are making out, that there´s some sort of impasse that can´t be bridged.

" We´re very close. Ryan wants to stay and we want him to stay."

Following tabloid reports that some United players are upset with the training methods being deployed by Carlos Queiroz, Ferguson revealed he is more than satisfied with the drills at Carrington.

" I think our training is always that way [bright]," he stressed. " We work hard and plan it right for the players.

" We give them the right platform to express themselves in the training session; that´s always been the way here."

The Red Devils chief was characteristically cagey about any transfer plans in the summer.
" There´s no shopping list and, if there was, I wouldn´t tell you!" he joked.

Manchester United : Nouvelle proposition de rachat de Malcolm Glazer
15 avril 2005 - 15 h 13 -

Angleterre: Ferguson attaque Chelsea
