United step up Spanish chase
Manchester United chief Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly made Sevilla starlet Sergio Ramos his prime transfer target for the summer.
The wonderfully talented defender, who plays at full back, has already come under the gaze of United, Arsenal and Real Madrid this season.
However, it is now being claimed that having watched him again in recent weeks - Ferguson has told the club´s directors that he wants Ramos at ´any cost´.
Ramos is already a full international and like with Jose Antonio Reyes - Sevilla know that they may struggle to keep hold of one of Europe´s most highly rated youngsters, although they did increase his release clause to £18 million in January.
The 18-year-old has been watched by Martin Ferguson, United´s chief scout and brother of Sir Alex, a number times over the past few weeks and glowing references from him seem to have urged The Red Devils to make a move sooner rather than later.
Ramos has always stated his desire to remain with Sevilla, but it seems increasingly likely he could be on the move.
Martin Ferguson has been very busy in Spain over recent months and has already highlighted a number of possible summer signings for the Old Trafford giants.
He has filed favourable reports on the likes of Villarreal´s Jose Reina, Ivan De La Pena of Espanyol, and Racing Santander winger Mario Regueiro.
Away from Ramos and the others, another Racing player has also come to Ferguson´s attention in the shape of Anderson Silva.
The 23-year-old is a defensive midfielder and like De La Pena and Michael Essien, is believed to be considered as a possible long-term replacement for United skipper Roy Keane.
United´s interest in Silva is even believed to have reached the point of contact between Martin Ferguson and the player´s agent.
However, Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are all aware of the South American´s capabilities and are unlikely to allow United a straight forward path to his signature.
United chief executive David Gill has already insisted the club have spent this summer´s transfer budget following the near £30 million paid for Wayne Rooney last August.
However, Ferguson knows he can raise money from sales of other players with a host of United´s current squad sweating over their futures - including the likes of Alan Smith, Kleberson, David Bellion, Darren Fletcher, Quinton Fortune and Phil Neville.
Gill did state that money has been set aside for a new goalkeeper, with Roy Carroll looking set to depart on a free transfer
Giggs set for new talks
Manchester United are set to reopen talks with Ryan Giggs over a new deal.
Giggs and United have been in dispute over his contractual situation, with 18 months left on his current deal.
The Welsh star has been seeking a two-year extension, but the club were only prepared to offer him a 12-month deal because of his age.
Giggs is hoping an agreement can be reached over a two-year deal and the player´s agent Harry Swales has revealed he is set for discussions next week.
" I am hoping we will get around a table and talk again," said Swales.
" I think common sense will prevail on both sides.
" I am not one to go thumping on desks and demanding things.
" Ryan doesn´t want to leave United.
" It´s his life, not just a career. We have never discussed anything beyond him staying."
Giggs is hoping to end his career at United and it is expected that the club will look to extend his stay at the club.
Rio could quit United
Rio Ferdinand´s agent Pini Zahavi has revealed his client could quit Manchester United when his contract with the club expires.
The former Leeds United defender has two years remaining on his existing deal and is in talks over extending his stay with The Red Devils.
Ferdinand is keen to stay with the Old Trafford giants, but should United fail to come up with the goods then he will see out his contract.
The England international harbours an ambition to play in Europe and could make the switch to Italy or Spain for free in the summer of 2007.
" He wants to stay at United and the idea is to extend his present deal by another three years," said Zahavi.
" If he doesn´t sign a new deal he will leave in two years to play abroad, which has always been one of his ambitions.
" But I think he will stay, providing the conditions are right."
The Professional Footballers´ Association have announced the nominees for their 2005 Player of the Year awards.
As expected Chelsea duo Frank Lampard and John Terry are nominated and they are regarded as clear favourites to lift the award.
A third Blue is also up for the award in the shape of goalkeeper Petr Cech, while winner for the last two year´s Thierry Henry is also in with a chance of retaining his award.
Liverpool skipper Steve Gerrard once again makes the shortlist, with Crystal Palace star Andy Johnson making up the nominations for the top award.
For the Young Players´ Award, last season´s winner Scott Parker is ineligible meaning a new name will be on the trophy.
Again Chelsea are represented and have the favourite for the gong in the shape of Dutch flyer Arjen Robben.
Despite not having any names up for the top award, Manchester United are well represented in this category with both Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney looking for silverware.
Manchester City´s Shaun-Wright Phillips is also in contention, as is Stewart Downing of Middlesbrough.
Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe makes up the list in what looks a very competitive young players category.
The winners will be announced at the PFA´s gala dinner later this month.

Lampard is the best this year ![]()
Kleberson wants United stay
Kleberson has insisted that his future lies with Manchester United, despite being heavily linked with a move after failing to make an impact at Old Trafford.
The Brazilian midfielder has often cut a despondent figure since his £6 million move from Atletico Paranaense in 2003, and was close to agreeing a move to cash-rich Corinthians in recent months.
The MSI backed Brazilian outfit were looking to complement their growing ranks of expensive stars with the 2002 World Cup winner after signing other high profile South American players such as Carlos Tevez.
However Sir Alex Ferguson has voiced his intention to grant the 25-year-old another chance to prove his quality with the English giants, and Kleberson insists he wants to remain at United for the long-term.
" I hope I will be here next season, it´s a great club and obviously I still have a contract here," Kleberson told MUTV.
" I want to carry on at this club for as long possible.
" All footballers get linked with many different clubs but my focus is with Manchester United and that is all I am concentrating on at the moment."
However, Kleberson´s future is far from settled under Ferguson, with Corinthians still holding an interest and the United boss needing to sell players if he is to finance a summer spending spree.

Ramos open to United talk
Manchester United target Sergio Ramos has refused to rule out of the possibility of a move to England.
The 19-year-old Sevilla defender has been watched closely by United in recent weeks and they are now believed to be gearing up a summer bid.
Arsenal and Real Madrid are also very keen, but Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to capture one of Europe´s top youngsters.
Talking to skysports.com, Ramos says he has not heard anything directly from United.
" I know the news from the papers, but little more than that," he told skysports.com.
" I am happy with my work this season and things are sensational for me because this demonstrate that my play is good.
" If they [United] are interested for me the solution is easy. It all depends on Sevilla, and after that they must speak with my father and brother [his agents]."
Sevilla have recently extended Ramos´s release clause to £18 million and president Jose Maria Del Nido insists United will have to pay that if they want him.
" If they pay the clause there will be no problems over negotiations," he stated.
United revolt
Manchester United stars have revolted over the increasing influence of Carlos Queiroz as Malcolm Glazer bid £800million to buy the club. Senior players are unhappy manager Alex Ferguson has given his No 2 Queiroz a bigger say over tactics, team selection and training. Queiroz´s involvement caused a serious dressing room row and a training ground confrontation. After the humiliating defeat at Norwich, some players asked Reserve team boss Brian McClair to speak to Ferguson on their behalf. McClair obliged but an angry Fergie refuted the criticism and defended Queiroz.

Carlos semi in charge?
Manchester United go into their critical FA Cup semi final with Newcastle on Sunday with players divided over the role of assistant manager Carlos Queiroz. Amazingly, Queiroz picked the team for last weekend´s defeat at Norwich, and while Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to take charge this weekend the players are surprised at the involvement of the Portuguese coach. Several big-name players at United are said to have become dismayed with the growing influence of Queiroz, which reached breaking point when it emerged he picked the team for the 2-0 defeat at bottom-of-the-table Norwich.

Fergie´s week of hell
Malcolm Glazer last night bid £800million for Manchester United to round off a nightmare week for Alex Ferguson. The club’s board could now find the revised offer difficult to reject under stockmarket guidelines. Fans’ groups want it thrown out but the boardroom could find itself duty bound to let the shareholders decide if they want to accept an offer of £3 a share. Boss Fergie sympathises with supporters and does not want things changed at the club. He has a good working relationship with chief executive David Gill — but it is almost certain Gill would go if American tycoon Glazer takes over. Hard taskmaster Glazer is also expected to demand an improvement in Premiership and European performances, which have seen the club’s profits slump. Last night’s move adds further drama to a season that had already reached its low point at Norwich.

Wounded O´Shea´s glory hunt
John O´Shea last night warned that Manchester United will react like " wounded animals" in Sunday´s FA Cup semi-final showdown with Newcastle. The Cup is United´s last chance of silverware in a dismal season which has seen them lose out in the Premiership and Champions League. Sir Alex Ferguson´s side have scored just once in their last four games and their season reached a new low last weekend with a 2-0 defeat to bottom-club Norwich. But O´Shea insisted: " Despite our recent results, Newcastle know the quality they will be up against when they play us. They will have had a tough UEFA Cup tie in between and I think they´ll have a few players suspended when they face us. It will be a bit of an uphill struggle for them especially against a wounded animal like ourselves."

Sergio to be the new Nev
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants top young Spanish right-back Sergio Ramos Garcia to be Gary Neville´s long-term replacement. Ferguson´s scouts have pushed the case for a quick deal for the 19-year-old Seville defender, who is also attracting interest from Real Madrid, and groom him to fill the role at Old Trafford. United are delighted with the capture of young Barcelona centre-half Gerard Pique, who is on the brink of the first team, and now they want Sergio Ramos. Ferguson has a limited transfer kitty this summer and other areas - particularly goalkeeper - need to be sorted out first, but a £3 to £4million swoop could see Ramos Garcia arrive in Manchester. Seville sources claim United have made their interest known officially for the youngster. Ferguson is expected to watch Ramos Garcia personally before deciding on the size of the offer.
