Spanish eyes on Smith

Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Manchester United striker Alan Smith, but the club refused to be drawn on the subject when contacted by skysports.com.

Smith arrived at Old Trafford from bitter rivals Leeds last summer, but his thunder was stolen by the 11th-hour arrival of Wayne Rooney from Everton.

The England international has been forced to share the striking duties at Old Trafford with Rooney, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha and a clutch of clubs have been alerted to the fact that he has not cemented a regular spot in Manchester.

Newcastle are reportedly keeping close tabs on the situation, but it has now emerged that Catalan giants Barcelona are believed to be assessing the situation.

Barcelona have an embarrassment of attacking talent at Camp Nou, but this has not stopped the rumour mill from cranking into action.

Despite having the likes of Samuel Eto´o, Ronaldinho, Maxi Lopez and the currently injured Henrik Larsson in his squad, Frank Rijkaard is said to be considering the possibility of testing United´s resolve to keep Smith.

Reports are suggesting Barca will put together a package in the region of €15 million, which will involve two players heading to The Premiership in part exchange, in a bid to bring Smith to La Liga.

Barcelona director of sport Txiki Beguiristain would not be drawn on the rumours surrounding Smith, but did admit that the club are looking at possible summer arrivals.

" Our policy is not to comment on rumours in the press," Beguiristain told skysports.com.

" We are looking at players for the new season, but our priority is to win La Liga."

United chief Sir Alex Ferguson has been told by the club´s board that he will have to sell before he can buy, but the wily Scot has made no secret of his regard for Smith and is most unlikely to sanction a sale after just one season at the club.

The attack comes from 70s and 80s United legends Lou Macari and Jimmy Greenhoff, who believe boss Alex Ferguson has his tactics wrong. Macari said: “They did not play with any grit, passion or zest [at Norwich]. They never looked like scoring a goal. I am alarmed and concerned. It is all right keeping possession but you have to make passes that count, not sideways ones. This club is all about up-and-at-’em football played at 100mph. We want people in the box, balls in the box and oohs and aahs from the crowd for 90 minutes." Greenhoff agreed. He said: “We don’t want to go the way of boring Italian football with five in midfield and one up front. We are just not hurting anyone — and it is about time we did. In 1999 if the opposition scored two goals we would score three.” Macari added: “Wayne Rooney should be up front where he can hurt people, not on the wing. And Alan Smith is not a midfielder, he doesn’t have the craft or vision. If you try to make players into something they should never be, you give yourself problems.”

Malcolm Glazer is expected to relaunch his £800million takeover bid for Manchester United this week after sweetening the deal for both fans and shareholders. The American tycoon will promise to give Sir Alex Ferguson a transfer fund of up to £20m in the summer and restructure the deal to leave United with far less debt than under previous proposals. He will also pledge not to dramatically increase ordinary ticket prices and will ask corporate box holders to pay more.

De la Peña vers Manchester ?

Ivan De la Peña revient en pleine lumière grâce à ses bonnes performances dans l’ancien club de Luis Fernandez, l’Espanyol Barcelone. Plusieurs émissaires de grands clubs comme Manchester United seraient venu à maintes reprises superviser l’ancien Barcelonais.

Après un long passage à vide qui emmena l’Espagnol dans les crises romaines et marseillaises, le Catalan a retrouvé son niveau qui faisait de lui un grand espoir du football ibérique. Performant à l’Espanyol Barcelone depuis son arrivée, Ivan De la Peña revient de nulle part. De retour sur l’avant scène, le joueur attire toutes les convoitises à l’approche de l’intersaison. Jamais à son aise hors de Liga, il se dit que l’ancien coéquipier de Ronaldo ne serait pas contre une offre importante. Manchester serait intéressé et pourrait faire dans les heures qui viennent une première offre pour acquérir le milieu de terrain.

Ferdinand prêt à prolonger

Rio Ferdinand, le défenseur de Manchester United devrait prolonger son contrat le liant au club mancunien prochainement.

Arrivé en provenance de Leeds il y a trois saisons pour 20 M€, Rio Ferdinand a émis le souhait de prolonger de cinq ans son contrat avec Manchester avant la fin de saison, comme Il l’évoque sur le site de la BBC : «J’aimerais un nouveau contrat. Je suis heureux à Manchester, je vois bien mon futur ici et j’espère que les négociations seront positives.» De son coté, son agent Pini Zahavi confirme les premiers contacts reçus par les dirigeants de United : «Les choses progressent bien et j’espère que l’issue des pourparlers verra bientôt le jour.» Valeur sûre de Manchester en défense, un accord imminent devrait être trouvé entre les deux parties très bientôt.

Je ne suis pas trés fan de De la Peña, mais faut pas abuser il est quand même redevenu international espagnol, il était quasiment le joueur le plus prometteur du foot espagnol à une époque mais avait perdu son football, mais il joue trés bien cette saison.

Il fait partie des joueurs ( il doit y en avoir au moins une centaine) supervisés à travers le monde par Manchester, directement ou indirectement. De la à l´acheter il y a une différence...

La bonne information c´est que la prolongation de Rio, dont on parlait depuis quelques semaines, devrait bientôt être officialisée.

D´après ce qu´il se dit ça lui ferait un salaire de 100.000£ par semaine, il devrait etre le joueur le mieux payé du club avec un salaire pareil.

Reste à voir ce que donne les négociations avec Ronaldo.

Pour l´instant les mieux payés tournent à 90.000£ donc ça va encore on fait pas de " Mourinho" en lui doublant son salaire ^^

Ole will look to coach

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed he is likely to embark on a coaching career if he is unable to get back to full fitness.

The Manchester United legend has not played all season after a knee operation last year but is still hoping to figure in the 2005/2006 campaign.

After reiterating his desire to play on for a couple more seasons, the Norwegian also expressed a desire to look into taking up a management role in the future.

" In case it does not go well, I might become a coach sooner than expected," he told Tips.

" The original plan was to play out the 2006 season but I am longing to play football like never before.

" In case the comeback goes well and the knee stands it, I wouldn´t mind to play football for a couple of additional years at United.

" I will get a bit scared for the expectations regarding my comeback but I will do my best."

Solskjaer has been sorely missed by United this term and some fans point to his absence, in the wake of the sale of David Beckham to Real Madrid, as a key factor in their poor goalscoring return.
