Ferguson releases six youngsters

Manchester United have released six players after deciding to disband one of the club´s reserve sides.
Next season the club will have one reserve side and one youth team and boss Six Alex Ferguson conceded there were limited chances for the players.

Defender Paul Tierney is the only one of the sextet to have had first-team experience, although Ramon Calliste has figured for the Welsh under-21 squad.

Ben Collett, David Poole, Lee Lawrence and Steven Hogg have also been freed.

Ferguson added he would be making more use of the loan system to help blood young players at Old Trafford.

Chris Eagles is currently at Watford, while Kieran Richardson has been turning in impressive performances during West Brom´s relegation fight.

" Next season, with only one reserve team, we are going to farm more players out," said Ferguson.

" I think loans will be good for them to get league experience."

Davids race hots up

The race to sign Edgar Davids is hotting up as the midfielder looks almost certain to depart Internazionale in the summer.

Despite signing a €3.5 million contract in the summer, Davids has been found to be out-of-favour under boss Roberto Mancini and has only appeared seven times in Serie A this season.

An underwhelming season at the San Siro has led to much speculation that Davids will now cut his losses and seek a departure from the Italian outfit.

Barcelona attempted to sign the tenacious midfielder in the summer after he enjoyed a successful loan spell at Camp Nou, although the Holland international opted to return to Italy where he previously starred at Milan and Juventus.

Reports suggest that Frank Rijkaard may be interested in attempting to lure the 32-year-old back to Spain again, and a move to The Premiership is also on the cards.

Arsenal and Manchester United are both slated to hold an interest, although Chelsea would hold the trump card in any potential deal as Mancini is keen to recruit Blues midfielder Juan Veron on a permanent deal.

Interest in Italy is limited to capital side Roma, but they have more pressing matters to attend to as they attempt to tie up contract extensions for the key attacking trio of Francesco Totti, Vincenzo Montella and Antonio Cassano.

Davids is an iconic figure in the game after a long career with some of the continent´s most successful clubs, and it is certain that he will only continue his career at a high-profile side.

Fergie: Leave Rooney alone

Sir Alex Ferguson is upset with all the media focus on Wayne Rooney and does not want the Manchester United striker to follow in the footsteps of the likes of David Beckham, Paul Gascoigne and George Best in terms of the attention lavished upon them in the press.

The United boss must have been impressed with his striker´s fine performances for England over the past week but Ferguson is just pleased that all of his international players returned unscathed.

" The issue about Rooney is you don´t have a David Beckham, you don´t have a Paul Gascoigne, you don´t have a George Best, so you´re picking on some poor kid so you can sell your newspapers, your TV programmes and you´re never going to leave him alone, right," he told Sky Sports News.

" Eventually, hopefully the maturity will mean he can cope with it all. 19-year-olds are not expected to do that. It´s why I used to protect Ryan Giggs and all the young kids and it´s the way I´ll protect Wayne Rooney.
