Gill keen to end Giggs stand-off
Manchester United chief executive David Gill believes Ryan Giggs will agree a new deal to keep him at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old´s contract runs out in 2006 and although a one-year extension has been tabled, Giggs wants two.
It has been suggested that Giggs could be off-loaded in the summer to provide a transfer kitty for Sir Alex Ferguson.
But Gill said: " We do not want Ryan to leave, Ryan does not want to leave and we are confident we can reach an agreement to extend his stay."
Any new deal is expected to be heavily based on appearances, though, as Gill battles to keep United´s ratio of wages to turnover below 50%.
But he feels there is a growing acceptance amongst players that times are changing.
He said: " We are moving towards a situation - maybe not as quickly as we would like - where players´ remuneration is more incentive-based, whether it be qualification into the group stages of the Champions League or appearance fees.
" We are trying to establish a wage profile that reflects the performance of the club.
" Players have to recognise the days of huge pay rises are not there - they are still getting paid very good salaries but we will not see rises of 25%."
Rooney ´assault´ turmoil
England´s World Cup preparations were last night disrupted by news that Wayne Rooney was under investigation for an alleged nightclub assault. The incident in Manchester city centre involved a 22-year-old student, who claimed he was punched three times by Rooney, 19, at 1am yesterday morning. Greater Manchester police said last night that ´a formal complaint of assault´ had been made at 5pm yesterday and that they were to launch an investigation.

We can´t keep Carroll
Roy Carroll will leave Manchester United this summer. The Northern Ireland keeper has refused to sign a new deal because manager Sir Alex Ferguson will not give him assurances he will be No.1 ahead of Tim Howard. And for the first time the club has revealed he will be on his way, with chief executive David Gill admitting: " It looks like Roy has decided to leave on a free transfer on June 30. Obviously we would have to sign a new keeper if Roy doesn´t resign. We are not sitting on our hands. We will look at who is available and who can fill his boots."

Alex hit by profit crash
Sir Alex Ferguson has been told he must sell before he can buy this summer. Manchester United made that absolutely clear on the day they revealed a dramatic £14.4m drop in profits. The figures were the worst in five years and chief executive David Gill said the club was going through a " challenging period." Gill said manager Ferguson had already accepted he would have no transfer funds this summer when he signed Wayne Rooney in August. " That was a decision taken in agreement with Sir Alex," said Gill. " We are pleased with the composition of the squad, so any funds for new acquisitions will be paid for by disposals."

O´Neill´s ahead of the Que
Sir Alex Ferguson has nominated assistant Carlos Queiroz as his successor - but the bookies still believe Martin O´Neill will get the biggest job in club football. Bet365 make the Celtic boss 7/4 favourite to replace Fergie, with Queiroz - who flopped as David Beckham´s coach at Real Madrid - at 5/2. Last week Sir Alex claimed his No.2 was better than Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, saying: " There are many Portuguese people in football but I have the best one here in Carlos Queiroz. Can he be the next manager? Why not? He knows how to be one, he has experience and he is very bright."

Kleberson makes comeback
Kleberson has made a comeback for Manchester United´s reserve team in a rare defeat in the Pontins League.
The Brazilian was expected to return to his homeland with Corinthians after failing to impress at Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed he is willing to give the World Cup winner further opportunities to prove he can cut it at Premiership level.
After being out injured since the Carling Cup win against Arsenal, Kleberson managed 45 minutes in United´s surprise 2-1 loss to Stockport County at Edgeley Park.
It represented a stark contrast to lifting the game´s biggest prize with Brazil in 2002, but the midfielder will be hoping for a first team opportunity before the season is out as United bid to hang onto second place and clinch an FA Cup final spot for the second successive campaign.
David Bellion was United´s scorer in the game, another player whose future with The Red Devils could be in doubt after chief executive David Gill confirmed on Tuesday that Ferguson will need to sell before adding to his squad in the summer.
Il a quel age Kameni ? ??
Toon quiet on Smith link
Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd has refused to be drawn on reports linking the club with a move for Manchester United´s Alan Smith.
Reports suggested that The Magpies were interested in mounting an end of season bid for the former Leeds United man.
Newcastle were one of a number of clubs who made a bid last summer for Smith, who revealed that he shunned a move to Tyneside as well as Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Rangers.
All Shepherd would say is that they did indeed make a move for him last summer.
" We tried to sign Smith last season but he chose Manchester United instead of us," he said.
Shepherd was speaking as he flew to Portugal for a meeting with Sporting Lisbon.
Newcastle are talking with Sporting about arrangements for their forthcoming Uefa Cup quarter final tie, but also about the future of loanee Hugo Viana.
Viana is currently on a season-long loan at The Jose Alvalade and he has always stated his desire to remain in his homeland, after just two seasons in England.
" We are now talking to them about Hugo´s future as really we want to know what they are going to do at the end of the season," said Shepherd.
Kameni a seulement 21 ans !
fergusson est limogeable . .

Carroll to leave United in summer
22 March 2005
Manchester United are on the lookout for a new goalkeeper after it was revealed Roy Carroll is set to leave in the summer.
The Northern Ireland international has so far failed to negotiate a new contract at Old Trafford and the club are preparing to find his replacement.
United chief executive David Gill today revealed the club had identified possible replacements should Carroll walk away and leave United with just Tim Howard as an experienced keeper.

David Gill says United will begin a search to find a replacement for Roy Carroll in the summer.
The Reds chief executive says that there is currently " no indication" that Roy Carroll will put pen-to-paper on the final deal United have offered the Northern Ireland international.
" Obviously we would have to sign a goalkeeper if Roy Carroll doesn´t re-sign," Gill told BBC Radio Four. " If we´ve got a vacancy in that department, we would have to make money available for that.
" There is no indication to us that he is going to accept our final contract offer in which case he will leave as a free agent on June 30.
" We are not sitting on our hands. We will look at who is available and who could fill his boots."
