Smith ready to role
Alan Smith says a medal will not mean anything to him unless he has a big say in Manchester United’s run-in. Smith made his first appearance in 11 games during Saturday’s win against Portsmouth. The former Leeds striker had been out injured for eight matches and named on the bench for the last three. He will have been particularly disappointed at not seeing any Champions League action against AC Milan last week. Now he wants boss Alex Ferguson to play him — even if it means taking up a role in the centre of midfield. Smith, 24, said: “When people come to Manchester United they say they want to be here to win things. But I want to be an essential part in winning those things. For me it is vital that you have that sort of attitude. You have to want to be part of it and make sure you give something to the team. I don’t just want to be a bit-part player and then pick up a trophy. It is important to try and make the team better — that is why I came here.”

Carroll prepared to leave Man Utd
tribalfootball.com - March 2, 2005

Roy Carroll is prepared to leave Manchester United at the end of this season.

The Times says Carroll knows he cannot expect to be guaranteed No1 status at Old Trafford and will leave in June when his current deal expires.

Carroll´s agent, Francis Martin, indicated yesterday that it was no longer the financial terms of the proposed three-year deal that are at issue.

" The offer is a fair one," Martin said. " Roy needs to decide whether the contract is there because the club see him as a No2, or do they have the confidence in him as a long-term No 1," he said.

Proto race hots up

The agent of Belgium international Silvio Proto has confirmed that both Manchester United and Arsenal are vying for his client´s services.

Both clubs have watched the La Louviere goalkeeper in the past month and are thought to have been impressed with his capabilities.

La Louviere have already confirmed to skysports.com that they will not stand in the player´s way, should they receive a suitable offer.

Proto´s agent, Pietro Alatta, has now suggested that both English clubs have already started negotiations and that a bidding war could well ensue.

The promising custodian is also believed to have attracted interest from Italy, but Alatta is adamant that a move to England is more likely.

´´Manchester United and Arsenal are fighting for him,´´ Alatta told Belgian paper Gazet van Antwerpen.

´´Silvio is also the most wanted player in Belgium. Almost all clubs in Italy love him.

´´Roma, Fiorentina, Siena, Vicenza, Genoa - all
want him.

´´Palermo even made a bid for him. But Proto prefers a move to England. No problem.

´´Manchester United and Arsenal have started a war for him. Both have seen him several times and are very impressed.´´

Proto has a contract with La Louviere until 2006, but a clause within this deal allows him to leave for €625,000.

´´Only Proto can decide if he will use that clause,´´ continued Alatta.

´´Anderlecht are also interested but they haven´t made a concrete bid so far.

´´I think they are afraid to make a small bid because they have heard which big clubs are interested also.

´´I can´t understand the top teams. Proto isn´t expensive.´´

Millers to look at Man Utd´s Fox
Manchester United midfielder David Fox has joined Championship strugglers Rotherham on a three-day trial.
Fox, 21, has yet to make a first-team appearance for United but Millers manager Alan Knill feels he can provide some much-needed quality.

" We´ve got him here for a few days so that we can take a look at each other, said Knill.

" He is the type of player we have to be assessing when you consider the age of many of our current players."

Fergie is so Keane on Essien
Manchester United will bid for £10m-rated Michael Essien as Roy Keane´s long-term replacement in the summer. Keane is 34 in August and has made it clear he may quit football after one final campaign. Essien definitely fits the bill, which is why United have already made their intentions clear to his agent Fabien Piveteau that they will make a bid in June. Piviteau said: " I know Juventus are attracted to him. However, while I have not had direct contact, that is the case with people from Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona."

Rossi Set For Promising Reds Career - Fergie

United´s 18-year-old striker Giuseppe Rossi is earmarked for a bright Old Trafford future having made huge strides in the Reserves following his arrival from Parma in the summer.

Ten goals from 14 starts for United´s Reserves has created a buzz around Rossi´s development at Old Trafford.

The America-born striker, who holds an Italian passport, was recently instated in United´s 25-man Champions League squad as recognition for his impressive performances this term.

His name has been increasingly mentioned among the precious but fervent few that travel to Reserve matches and those who watch the second string on MUTV.

" Giuseppe Rossi is improving all the time," enthuses Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson. " He has got a bright future ahead of him.

" He is probably the coolest player at the club in terms of his play around the penalty box." Praise indeed.

However, United captain Roy Keane, although acutely aware of the youngster´s potential, recently counselled that undue pressure should not be placed on a talent very much in the development stage.

But it is difficult to keep the reins on such a precocious talent; a player that made two appearances as a 17-year-old for the Reds - against Crystal Palace and Arsenal in the League Cup - and one who continues to make inroads into the first-team.

" We had him in the squad for our match at Everton recently," added Ferguson. " He has an absolutely wonderful temperament for a striker."

Joaquin set to snub Blues

Real Betis winger Joaquin Sanchez looks as if he is going to reject Chelsea to join Real Madrid during the summer.

Ahead of his side´s Champions League clash against Barcelona, Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho admitted the club had been in contact with the Spain international and refused to rule out a move for Joaquin during the summer.

However it appears Joaquin would prefer to stay in Spain, and he is targeting a move to the Bernabeu.

" I don´t know where I´m going to end up, but if a move happens, I want it to be relaxed and all in the open," Joaquin told Radio Marca.

" If I move to Real Madrid, then that´s great, because they´re the best team in the world.

" It would be a dream to play for Real Madrid and play in the Champions League."

If Joaquin does move to Real, he will be in direct competition with Luis Figo for a first-team place, although there are rumours that the Portuguese star could leave the club as he has less than 18 months left on his contract.

" It would be hard to go there with Luis Figo still there, because he´s a complete professional and essential for Madrid," added Joaquin.

" I still have a long way to go before I´m as good as he is.

" La Liga and Europe are full of great clubs, but as I´m Spanish, Madrid are one of the clubs I aspire to."

New keeper link for United

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Benfica´s Jose Felipe Moreira in the English press.

Sources in Portugal confirmed that United had scouts at Benfica´s 1-1 draw with Porto this week although it is not certain they were watching the 22-year-old keeper.

Many other clubs were represented at the game, including Juventus, Internazionale, Borussia Monchengladbach and Reggina.

Since replacing Robert Enke, Moreira has enhanced his reputation as a shot-stopper of some quality and the English reports claim he is rated in the £2.5 million class.

The Red Devils are believed to be looking at their goalkeeping options as Roy Carroll has yet to commit to a new deal at Old Trafford.

More of a long-term target is Espanyol´s Carlos Kameni, who provided further evidence of his growing stature within the game with a sparkling display against Barcelona.

The Catalan derby was a high-profile occasion and the African keeper turned on the style with an eye-catching performance.

United´s Tony Coton has watched Kameni in action this term and the former Wolves target is understood to be high on the list of potential reinforcements.

" All the credit must go to the team," said the Cameroon international afterwards. " Not just me.

" It is one of the most important points we´ve gained, not because it was at Camp Nou, but because it allows us to continue improving and moving up."

The speculation will continue as reports in Italy have suggested that United watched Internazionale´s Francesco Toldo in the Milan derby.

The more likely explanation for their presence, of course, is that they face a make-or-break UEFA Champions League second leg with Milan next week.
