Sir Alex Singles Out Rooney For Special Praise

Like most people inside Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson was eulogising over Wayne Rooney´s performance in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth.

Fergie spoke to Sky Sports after the vital win, and here´s what he had to say...

A vital late winner
" Time was running out, but as we´ve seen so many times over the years their determination and perseverance gets them over the line. That was one of these games."

Tricky Old Trafford surface
" The pitch was a bit lively. It had dried up a great deal and that happens here because the drainage is so good. It wasn´t comfortable for the players in terms of quick passing. They´re always having to take a touch and I think that was a reason for some of the passing being short."

Wayne Rooney´s solo show
" He was fantastic. I thought he was by far our best player and he was magnificent today. He´s a winner. He´s the one who was taking the baton up, making the run for the line and all day he was on-song."

Ruud´s comeback
" A terrific performance. It was his first 90 minutes in three months and he was terrific. I was really pleased and with the winning goal, the speed of the pass to Wayne and the control of Wayne killed the centre half and he scored a really nice goal."

No finger-pointing for Pompey goal
" I think there was a bit of luck attached to it. When the ball came into our box, I think it was Alan Smith who blocked it and it just fell nicely to the boy. He´s got it on the half volley and I think it was a well-taken goal really."

Importance of the win
" It was a terrific result for us today for a lot of reasons. Sometimes it can be difficult after a Wednesday night with such emotions and importance for the club. Plus Rio Ferdinand has a hamstring injury, I felt Roy Keane had to be rested and then Gary Neville was taken off at half-time. He´s gone for an x-ray, hopefully it´s not serious.

" All these changes don´t help you in terms of continuity, but the most important thing is that we won the game. Over the years, these kinds of results have resulted in us going for championships, and they also stress the perseverance and determination of Manchester United."

:rire:

Fergie´s challenge to Howard

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has thrown down the gauntlet to American keeper Tim Howard.

Howard was handed his first start in The Premiership since September in the win over Portsmouth on Saturday, taking over in goal from Roy Carroll.

Carroll paid the price for his blunder against Milan in the UEFA Champions League in midweek and it would appear as if Howard now has the chance to claim the number one jersey at Old Trafford.

" Roy Carroll made a big mistake on Wednesday," said Ferguson. " I don´t think he was totally responsible but maybe he is better out of it so I can give Tim Howard his go.

" We have the important game in Milan looming in 10 days´ time and I want to see how Tim responds to the challenge."

Carroll´s future at Old Trafford must now be in doubt, as he has failed to agree terms over a new contract and would be allowed to leave on a Bosman in the summer if no agreement is found.

Fábio Paim

Daddy, is that Fabio Paim, is it??. A question from a small kid to his father when they arrived at Sporting´s training ground ´Alcochete´.

Curiosity is following with Lynx´s eyes the ´Star´ of the team, the one who people say, can do anything with a football, skips past everyone and scores goals. ´Don´t be scared of him´ yell the parents of the many players he brushes aside with his exceptional technical skills.

Fabio Paim is 17 today and is destined to succeed! At 8 years old, he was already at Sporting after being at Benfica. Since then, he´s been a huge success for Sporting´s youth teams. Fame and future stardom are inevitable for Fabio Paim.

One day to do his hair..

The respect that he has, makes him even call the older ones as ´Mister´. His idol is Ronaldinho Gaucho. He plays in the same position and tries to do the same Ronaldinho does on the field. ´Sometimes i play individualy but i love feints and tricks, football is not just about passes and goals, there has to be a bit of fantasy to it too.

Even in his looks, Paim tried to imitate his idol. ´Now i finally managed to do my locks but it took me a day´.

He also reveals how happy he was the day he finally met Ricardo Quaresma and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The coach speaks of an extraordinary talent

Since the age of 8, Fabio Paim has been surrounded by all the technical staff of Sporting. His actual coach, Joao Couto, doesn´t have any doubts and considers Paim as a real talent who can go very far.

´Fabio is a fantastic player, very creative´. He´s also extremely strong in the One on One and even in the One on Two!

He has a terrific improvisation and on top of all his qualities, is also a very good team player. He has everything to reach the international stage as have done some Sporting youngsters in the past. Fabio Paim is currently part of a team full of future stars.

In his team also play: Joao Martins ( brother of Carlos Martins) someone who everyone also predicts a great future and Tiago Pinto ( son of joao pinto) amongst others.

He gets 300 euros and likes to help his family..
Despite turning just 17, the young prodigy reveals his maturity and respect towards money and his family. Despite being so young, he still does all he can to help his family.

´I don´t help as much as i´d like to because i must also buy my own stuff´.

He lives in Sporting´s youth Academy but never complains, not even of the food. ´The food is very good´ so he says and his favourite meal is ´bitoque´ ( steak with fries and egg)
He couldn´t go too far at school but even though he tried to finish his IT course.

He takes advantage of his free time to go to shopping centres and cinema. ? I love watching movies. The last one i saw was ´Paparazzi´ and i loved it.

Contract expires at the end of the season..
His current contract expires at the end of the season. Considered as one of Sporting´s new stars, Sporting´s board are already in talks with his agent concerning a professional contract.

:d) On a un contrat de partenariat avec le Sportinf, Paim est milieu gauche et on le suit depuis un moment, en plus il est libre en juin...A suivre de prés.

Ruddy agrees Everton move

Cambridge United´s promising goalkeeper John Ruddy has agreed to sign for Everton.

The two clubs spent last week in transfer talks before concurring upon an undisclosed fee for the teenager.

Ruddy travelled to Goodison Park to discuss personal terms on Monday and he has agreed to pen a deal to join The Toffees until 2007.

The 18-year-old will stay with Cambridge until the end of the season before officially becoming an Everton player in the summer.

His decision to sign for The Toffees is likely to disappoint a clutch of fellow Premiership clubs, who had expressed an interest in Ruddy.

The highly-rated shot-stopper trained with Manchester United earlier in the season, while Arsenal, Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Newcastle United were also keen.

Celtic and Wigan Athletic were also monitoring his progress but he has now opted to link up with David Moyes´ progressive Everton side

Millers in Fox hunt

Rotherham United are hoping to pip an unknown Dutch club to the signing of Manchester United rookie David Fox.

The midfielder is linking up with The Millers on Tuesday to train with The Championship´s bottom club this week.

But an unnamed club in Holland are also keen to put the 21-year-old under the microscope in a trial.

Millers manager Alan Knill confirmed Fox is coming to the club and he will look for a deal if the youngster impresses.

" We have got him here for a few days so that we can take a look at each other," Knill told the club´s official website.

" He is the type of player we have to be assessing when you consider the age of many of our current players.

" David is also intending to spend a few days with a Dutch club so we are hoping that he will want to stay with us if we feel he is what we are looking for after his trial."

Fox has yet to make his first team debut with The Red Devils, although he has been a regular figure in the reserve side.

He spent a month on loan at Shrewsbury Town earlier in the season, scoring once in five appearances, and will be hoping to gain more experience at Millmoor.
