Roy Carroll - 7: Quiet game as City´s forwards misfired. Kept concentration to save well from Musampa late on.

Gary Neville - 6: A fine run and cross created the opening goal for Rooney and in defence he was typically solid.

Gabriel Heinze - 8 ( STAR MAN): He came out on top in an intriguing battle with Wright-Phillips. Relentless in defence, he was even a threat at the other end.

Wes Brown - 5: Embarassed on the touchline by Wright-Phillips and his lack of concentration almost allowed Fowler to score.

Rio Ferdinand - 6: Clashed heads early on but nearly put his side in difficulty with slack header back to Carroll.

John O´Shea - 5: Took a blow to the head and was forced off the field after just over half an hour of the game.

Darren Fletcher - 6: Hard working as ever. He started on the right but moved inside after Ronaldo´s arrival and looked more effective there.

Roy Keane - 7: He was increasingly influential after the break and played a big role in United´s second goal.

Paul Scholes - 6: Missed a glorious chance when he headed over. His passing was tidy but he was not able to get forward enough to do his usual damage.

Quinton Fortune - 6: Not able to get down the left wing but he played his part in helping dominate the centre.

Wayne Rooney - 8: He was the difference between the two sides, scoring the first and creating the second. Booked for a petulant foul on Dunne but otherwise kept his cool.

Substitutes

Cristiano Ronaldo ( replaced O´Shea, 33 mins) - 6: Brought off the bench early on and gave United more width and attacking flair, but there was little end product.

Ryan Giggs ( replaced Fletcher, 63 mins) - 6: Given half an hour as United went for the win. Did not have much to do with either goal but hit the post.

Van Nistelrooy set for Cup return

Van Nistelrooy´s career stats
Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy may make his comeback after an Achilles tendon injury in the FA Cup fifth round tie at Everton on Saturday.
He has been out of action for nearly three months, and had targeted a return in the Champions League tie with AC Milan on 23 February.

But Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hinted he may be back early.

He said: " There is a chance he could be involved at Everton but we´ll just have to see how he comes through training."

The 28-year-old has been training in Holland, and Ferguson said: " Ruud comes back on Tuesday and we need to assess how far on he is.

" The training he has been doing in Holland has been perfect and I am very satisfied with it."

Even without Van Nistelrooy, United made it 13 wins in 15 league games with a 2-0 derby victory at Manchester City on Sunday.

L´attaquant néerlandais de Manchester United, Ruud van Nistelrooy, blessé à un tendon d´Achille depuis le 27 novembre, pourrait rejouer samedi contre Everton lors des 8e de finale de la Coupe d´Angleterre.

«Il y a des chances qu´il joue contre Everton mais nous devons voir ce que va donner son entraînement», a indiqué le manager de MU Alex Ferguson. Après une remise en forme aux Pays-Bas, l´international néerlandais, auteur de 12 buts pour son club cette saison - quatre en Championnat, huit en Ligue des champions -, doit en effet s´entraîner cette semaine avec ses coéquipiers qu´il rejoindra mardi.

Ferguson avait d´abord annoncé que van Nistelrooy ferait son retour lors du match aller des 8e de finale de la Ligue des champions face au Milna AC, le 23 février à Old Trafford.

Duo chasing Belgian keeper

Arsenal and Manchester United are battling it out to sign Belgian goalkeeper Silvio Proto.

The two Premiership giants watched Proto in action last weekend against and they could only have been impressed as the custodian kept a clean sheet against Lokeren.

Arsenal have been linked with Proto for some time and have watched him on several occasions this season.

Both sides could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the summer as they have had problems between the sticks this season.

United currently have Roy Carroll as first choice at United after he displaced Tim Howard in the starting line-up, but both have failed to establish themselves.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is considering his goalkeeping options having swapped Manuel Almunia for Jens Lehmann in November only to restore the German to first choice after a couple of shaky performances from Almunia.

Proto is not worried about the speculation and is concentrating on his football.

The Belgian international admitted he is only surprised that no top Belgian sides have shown an interest in him.

" We will see what happens in the future," said Proto of his future.

" What amazes me is that not one single Belgian club has shown an interest and in the foreign countries they know who I am."

Striker joins anti Glazer group

Manchester United star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has joined the anti Malcolm Glazer protest by becoming a patron of fans action group Shareholders United.
" I think it is important that the club remains in the right hands," said the man who scored the winning goal in the team´s 1999 Champions League victory.

" I am honoured," said Solskjaer, who is the first current player from the Reds to join the group.

Other patrons include ex stars Harry Gregg, Alex Stepney and Paddy Crerand.

" I am absolutely on the supporters´ side and think the club is in very good hands as it is today," said Solskjaer.

" I am a United fan myself and only want what is best for the future."

The announcement came on Monday as US tycoon Glazer finally got a chance to view the club´s accounts as part of the due diligence process - the investigation to check a business is viable before a takeover.

Keane undecided over retirement

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has revealed he may not retire at the end of his current contract after talks with manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
Keane said last week he would not play on when his deal ends in June 2006, he has admitted he may want to continue.

" If this time next year my body is holding up and my hip is okay, and the knee, and Sir Alex feels I can still contribute then who knows," said Keane.

" The manager told me on Saturday he´ll be the one deciding when I´ll retire."

Keane says he does not want to finish his career with a lower league club and wants to get into management when his playing days are over.

" I couldn´t see myself playing for another English team, or going down to the First or Second Division, no disrespect to the teams down there," he added.

" I couldn´t see it myself but the manager Saturday morning made that point to me and who knows.

" I am not silly enough to believe I could manage a Premiership club straight away, I would have thought I would have to go off and learn my trade, but again I do hope to be playing next year."

Keane has begun the process of obtaining his Uefa coaching qualifications, prompting speculation he may take a coaching role at Old Trafford.

He was recently described by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson as the greatest player of his time at the club, and scored his 50th goal for the club in the recent 2-0 defeat of Birmingham.

Keane - who took over the club captaincy in 1997 - has won an impressive number of trophies in his time at the club.

The midfielder has notched up seven Premiership titles, four FA Cups and a League Cup as well as the Champions League in United´s famous Treble season in 1999.

Keane has 62 international caps and collected the PFA Player of the Year award in 2000.

Real stand firm over Nihat

Real Sociedad have reiterated their desire to hold on to Nihat Kahveci amid reports of renewed interest from Manchester United.

The future of the Turkish star has been thrown into doubt in recent weeks because of Sociedad´s crippling debts.

Nihat recently rejected a new contract offer from the Basque outfit, and both parties have agreed to postpone talks on a new deal until the summer when the club´s financial situation is likely to decide whether or not he will be sold on.

A number of clubs are thought to have checked on the 24-year-old in recent weeks after his uncertain situation at the Anoeta came to light.

United, who were linked with the forward two seasons ago, are understood to have rekindled their interest, and are reported to have sent boss Sir Alex Ferguson´s son, Martin, to watch him in action last weekend.

The Turk caught the eye with two goals in Real´s crucial 3-1 win at Racing Santander to take his season´s tally to 13.

CSKA Moscow are known to have submitted an offer for the player and were keen to try and strike a deal to lure him from Sociedad before the end of the current season.

However, Sociedad president Jose Matia Asiazaran insists there is no chance of such a possibility.

" Yes, there is a formal interest from CSKA Moscow, but Nihat will not leave the club before the end of the season," he stated.

For his part, the former Besiktas star is focused on maintaining his form to try and ensure Sociedad avoid relegation from La Primera.

" I can´t go now. I can´t walk out on Real Sociedad," he stated.

" We are fighting to try and secure some tranquillity and I am one of those who thinks that the more strength there is in the team, the better.

" On Sunday we took a very important step in Santander, and now it is a question of continuing to take steps forward in the league."

Ruud Returns To United Training

Ruud van Nistelrooy is due back in training for Manchester United today ( Tuesday).

The Dutch striker has been out since November and returns to Manchester from Holland, where he has been working on his recovery from Achilles tendon injury.

Van Nistelrooy is expected to go straight into full training this week and, according to Ferguson, could play some part against Everton on Saturday.

" If Ruud comes through his training this week without a problem, then we may put him on the bench against Everton," Ferguson told reporters at the weekend.

The target has always been to return against AC Milan, but the 28-year-old Dutch striker says is ahead of schedule.

" I can´t wait to get back into training and meet up with my team-mates again," Ruud is quoted as saying in Tuesday´s Daily Mirror. " I´m ahead of schedule and I´ve made good progress with my physio in Holland.

" I have been away from United for a long time. But I´m fit again and hungry to play."

Van Nistelrooy returns with his strike-partner Wayne Rooney in impressive form.

" Wayne is fearless and has got a fantastic attitude for a player so young," said Ruud. " He has great character and has been playing really well."

Rooney´s goal against Manchester City edged him one ahead of Ruud in the scoring stakes. Van Nistelrooy has 12 for the season, while Rooney´s deflected effort was his 13th this term
