Benfica want United misfit
Benfica have joined Paris Saint Germain in the chase for Manchester United misfit Eric Djemba-Djemba.
The Cameroon international has struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford since joining the club from Nantes in the summer of 2003.
Djemba-Djemba has only been used as a bit-part player by Sir Alex Ferguson and the midfielder has not made the desired impact on the occasions he has been picked.
Ferguson admitted last week that there have been enquiries for the 24-year-old but hinted he was not prepared to allow the African to leave on loan.
PSG coach Vahid Halilhodzic has been keen to take Djemba-Djemba to the French capital but Portuguese giants Benfica have also declared an interest.
The player´s agent Christophe Mongai has confirmed the interest from the two clubs but concedes Djemba-Djemba is not rushing to quit The Red Devils.
" They want the player for a loan for six months to begin with," Mongai told The Independent.
" But he wants to stay at Manchester United because he believes there is the possibility of playing."
United boss Ferguson is reportedly not willing to sanction Djemba-Djemba´s exit on a temporary basis, even if there is the prospect of a permanent deal at the end of the season.
Instead, rumours suggest the Scot is prepared to wait until the summer before cutting his losses on the midfielder.
How Duff was that
Sir Alex Ferguson´s failure to recruit a goalkeeper of genuine stature last night cost the Manchester United boss his proud 18-year record of never having lost a domestic semi-final. And once again, the goalkeeping culprit was Tim Howard. It was Howard whose calamitous blunder saw United dumped out of the Champions League last season by Jose Mourinho´s Porto. And those watching could have been forgiven for suffering a sense of deja vu as another gaffe by Howard, at the same end of Old Trafford, gifted Mourinho another victory over Fergie.

Duff ´n duffer
Chelsea reached the Carling Cup final — then warned: The quadruple is on. Damien Duff made a mug of United keeper Tim Howard with a free-kick winner to book Blues’ place against Liverpool next month. And it left Stamford Bridge boss Jose Mourinho eyeing a pile of silverware. The Portuguese chief said: “To win all four trophies will be very difficult but at this moment it is still possible.” Frank Lampard, who hit Blues’ opener, added: “If we can get this trophy in the bag it will give the confidence to go all out for the others.”

Fergie´s fuming
Furious Alex Ferguson blamed his defence for throwing away a place in the Carling Cup final. The Manchester United boss rapped: “You cannot expect to win games when the opposition score a free-kick from 40 yards. We’ve thrown it away and it was down to the defenders. They had every chance to attack the ball but they let it bounce. It was a terrific game but their goal was a soft one as well and we have to look at that.” Fergie lost a domestic cup semi-final for the first time since he became Old Trafford boss in 1986. He said: “In 18 years you expect to lose a semi-final sometime. But I didn’t want it to happen tonight.”

United 1 Chelsea 2
Jose Mourinho´s Chelsea charged towards the first final in their quest for a sensational quad last night. The Blues finally edged past Manchester United after two epic matches of their Carling Cup semi-final thanks to Damien Duff´s 45-yard winner. Mourinho´s men are now bang on course to complete a remarkable clean sweep of the four trophies they are playing for this season. It seemed unthinkable that such a target was achieveable back in August. But Chelsea have now booked a place at the Millennium Stadium next month to face Liverpool.

Jose vintage leaves Alex with sour grapes
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson seized a rare opportunity before last night´s match with Chelsea. He lectured Jose Mourinho and Roman Abramovich about being stingy with their money. Nothing to do with the £200million they have lavished on their team, of course. But a matter still close to Ferguson´s heart. And a chance, he may have thought, to expose the smallest chink in the golden armour of a golden team. He was, he said, less than impressed with the quality of the red wine he was served in Mourinho´s office at Stamford Bridge after the first leg of this semi-final a fortnight ago. " I like Jose," Ferguson said, " but what he gave me was like paint-stripper. I noticed that he didn´t have any and nor did Roman Abramovich. He will get a proper glass of wine in my office and when he comes next time for our Premiership fixture, if Chelsea have won the championship, I will toast his success with some really good stuff."

Kolo KO´d for crunch
Kolo Toure is out of Arsenal’s clash against Manchester United after picking up a three-match ban for elbowing Alan Shearer. The Ivory Coast defender, 23, admitted violent conduct after the FA saw video evidence of his attack on the Newcastle skipper at Highbury on Sunday. Toure will miss not only Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to Wolves, but also United’s league visit next Tuesday and the Premiership game at Aston Villa four days later. In Toure’s absence, Gunners’ boss Arsene Wenger is likely to turn to Pascal Cygan.

Pique to get deal
Gerard Pique is to be handed a five-year deal by Manchester United. The Spanish central defender arrived at Old Trafford as a trainee from Barcelona in the summer. But having played just three first-team games since then, Pique feared he was not going to make the grade at United. But he will celebrate his 18th birthday on February 2 with the five-year deal — which makes it clear boss Alex Ferguson has every faith in him. Pique said: “I will give it everything I’ve got and then maybe in two years I will be in the team.”

A bad week for referees
Professional referees Steve Bennett and Rob Styles can boast a 100 percent record with their decision-making this week. Six big decisions, six big mistakes.
[...]
Bennett´s refereeing cohort Styles fared little better on Wednesday evening as he officiated the Carling Cup semi-final, second leg between Manchester United and Chelsea.
Styles had a major decision to make in each half and he was sadly found wanting at pivotal junctures in the match.
With United trailing 1-0 towards the end of the first half, Wayne Bridge clearly caught Quinton Fortune with his outstretched leg and a penalty should have been awarded.
Fortune´s exaggerated reaction to the challenge may not have aided his claims but there is a distinct difference between falling over under contact and the blatant dive delivered by Diouf.
Maybe Styles was partially unsighted but it was a far more certain penalty than the spot kick given to United by Mike Riley against Arsenal earlier in the season, when Wayne Rooney fell over thin air.
Styles´ second anxious moment arrived inside the opening 15 minutes of the second half after Cristiano Ronaldo and Claude Makelele tangled in midfield.
Ronaldo was rightly penalised for grappling with Makelele but the Frenchman´s reaction in aiming a fierce kick at the teenager merited a straight red card.
If Makelele had connected with his swinging boot, Ronaldo would still be dropping out of the Manchester sky so it is hard to fathom why only a yellow card was shown, particularly as Roy Keane was given the same punishment for merely wading into the argument.
The fact Makelele did not connect does not lessen the offence, as Lee Hendrie will testify, after he was rightly dismissed earlier in the campaign for aiming a headbutt at Manchester City full back Danny Mills.
Those two decisions clearly had a major impact on the contest and, had Styles acted correctly, Chelsea´s quadruple dream could easily have bitten the dust.
But Bennett and Styles are unlikely to be reprimanded by their bosses, despite making gaffes that should not be considered acceptable at the highest level.
It is not a case of picking on referees because they are an easy target, it is an attempt to try to improve standards for the good of the game.
If referees are allowed to continually get away with making mistakes, they will not get better.
Until they are properly held accountable, and made responsible for their errors, this type of thing will continue, and it has already gone on long enough.
What do you think? Did Bennett and Styles make too many major mistakes in their respective games? Or did they get the big decisions right and, thus, should be spared criticism?

Pique gets United chance
Manchester United have handed Spanish youngster Gerard Pique a five-year deal.
The 17-year-old moved to Old Trafford in the summer as a trainee after leaving Spanish giants Barcelona.
After making three first team appearances this season, Pique has been handed a long-term deal by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Pique celebrates his 18th birthday at the start of February and he could ask for no greater present than a chance to prove himself at United.
" I will give it everything I´ve got and then maybe in two years I will be in the team," said Pique.
The central defender will find it tough to get into the starting XI however, with Rio Ferdinand and Mikael Silvestre forming a sturdy partnership of late, while the likes of John O´Shea and Gary Neville can also fill in.
Wes Brown has found it hard to get a game himself, and he says that it has never been tougher to get into United´s side.
" This is the toughest period in my career in terms of competition for places," said Brown.

Latics land Cooper
Oldham Athletic have landed Manchester United striker Kenny Cooper.
The American striker has agreed a month-long deal at Boundary Park and is in line to make his debut in the FA Cup against Bolton on Sunday.
Cooper has just returned to Old Trafford after an ill-fated loan move to Portugal´s Academica came to an end in December.
The Baltimore-born star is now hoping for more success at Oldham and will look to impress Sir Alex Ferguson.

>> le gardien c´est une chose mais il nous manque quand meme un joueur pour suppléer Giggs et autre pour Keane donc l´année prochaine pourrait aussi très compliqué vu qu´on a pas une livre pour recruter.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have revealed that they have €169 million to spend on players this year and reports in Spain suggest that they have captured Brazilian wonderkid Robinho.
>> j´ai trouvé ça dans un article si c´est vrai ça peur, 169 millions d´euros a depenser pour recruter cette année c´est enorme, ils vont pouvoir concurrencer Abramovich.
