Manchester United are aiming to bring Ruud van Nistelrooy back for their UEFA Champions League clash with Milan.

Europe´s top prize was arguably Sir Alex Ferguson´s main aim before the season started and now United are 11 points adrift of leaders Chelsea - it almost certainly is.

Van Nistelrooy has been out of action for two months with an Achilles problem, but United do not want to rush him back ahead of schedule.

The Dutch star is targeting the first leg clash with Milan on February 23 as his comeback match.

" I spoke to Ruud and he is doing great," said Ferguson.

" He is doing power running and feeling no pain at all.

" Hopefully the AC Milan game will be the target."

Fergie: Ronaldo´s best game
Sir Alex Ferguson described Cristiano Ronaldo´s 90 minutes against Aston Villa as the Portuguese youngster´s best performance of the season.

The wide man opened the scoring and was a constant threat to the Midlanders´ defence, creating the clincher for Paul Scholes in a 3-1 victory.

" It was a good win for us," Ferguson told Sky Sports News. " Villa made us play a bit; they flooded the midfield and played a lot of good football but all the good threats were from us.

" The pitch is causing us a bit of bother just now but hopefully that will improve after the winter.

" There were some good performances. Ronaldo, for my money, had his best game of the season and was a constant threat to Villa.

" We expected a little dip in the winter so we let him go home for a 12-day break at Christmas and expected him to relish that and come back bouncing. He didn´t do as well as we´d expected but his game is coming back together again and it´s good to see.

" It´s terrific [for Louis Saha]. All goalscorers are the same and it´s his first [league] goal of the season so we´re all delighted for him. He´s going to improve and get better and better. He was a real threat to the defenders so we´re pleased for him."

Ferguson concedes the 11-point gap on leaders Chelsea may be too much to overhaul.

" I think we have to keep looking at Chelsea," he added. " They are playing fantastic and there´s no sign of any blips.

" But if we can maintain our form it helps us in other games.

" I think we are in championship form but Chelsea have an 11-point lead and don´t look like slipping up at all.

" We have great pride at this club and have to maintain that.

" It doesn´t look like it [Chelsea slipping up] but you never know and we´ve got to carry on."

Funnies: United´s Battered Balls

" They batter balls all over the place. One of them will hit me one day and kill me. That Scholes sends them inches by my head. Then all they hear is me bellowing ´Scholes!´ ´What?´ he says, looking up like an angel."
Fergie on the hazards of training

Welcome to your weekly helping of poor punditry, terrible tabloidisms and questionable quotes...

" They hit the ball hard. Gary Neville was having a p**s one day, 45 yards away by the fence. Scholes whacked him right in the arse."
More training tales from Fergie.

" I would have demanded my money back."
Keano, candid as ever, on the draw with Exeter.

" There are a lot of factors for wanting to move, but I still say the main one is to be near my family."
Robbie Savage sticks to his unconvincing guns in a bid to move to Blackburn.

" We told Blackburn they would have to pay the police bill if they want to play him."
Brum chairman David Gold on Savage´s potential April return as a Rovers player.

" The pressure of playing for a big club played on Robbie´s mind - he´ll be better off at a smaller club like Rovers."
Gold again, brilliantly having the last word.

" I could see in Steve Bruce´s eyes and the way he talked to me, he really wanted me"
Salif Diao misreads Brucey´s signals as he moves to St.Andrews.

" If you think this is busy, wait until the FA Trophy replay against Billericay next week."
An Exeter fan plays down United´s visit to St. James´ Park.
" Alan Shearer knows his own body. And he´s given me a good hour today."
Graeme Souness elicits awful images.

Retroactive Resting
" Benitez insisted Liverpool fans would forgive his decision to rest eight of the stars who are likely to face Manchester United in the more important fixture on Saturday." - Daily Express
So THAT´S why they lost at Burnley

" The team´s performances are like a stripper´s knickers - they are up one week then down the next."
York City´s Viv Busby on his team´s sporadic displays.
" United came with the intention of spoiling the game. Never mind Chelsea and Arsenal, Watford performed better than United at Anfield and still lost."
Liverpool´s website as United win at Anfield. Again.

" I think with a bit of luck, perhaps, I should have kept it out. But the ball moved and I couldn’t do anything about that."
Jerzy Dudek absolves himself from blame for Rooney´s matchwinner.

" It would be stupid to arrive here making noise and shoving around."
Thomas Gravesen remains calm on landing in Madrid.

:d) Liverpool have beaten Manchester United in making the first move for Real Madrid midfielder Santiago Solari, who is out of contract in the summer. ( Daily Star Sunday, The People)

:d) Middlesbrough and Manchester United are discussing a swap deal which would take Stewart Downing to Old Trafford and see Eric Djemba Djemba moving to the Riverside. ( Sunday Express)

Oh no! Forlan wants return
Manchester United reject Diego Forlan claims last summer´s move to Spanish minnows Villareal has helped him rediscover his top form. And the Uruguayan says he would love the chance to return to Old Trafford and prove his many critics wrong. Forlan told Sunday Mirror Sport: " Of course I wish I could have played the way I´m playing now when I was at United, but I believe the door isn´t closed yet." An unmitigated flop for United, the Uruguayan has been a revelation since swapping Manchester for Spain. With 11 goals so far this campaign, he is second top scorer in La Liga with the same tally as Real Madrid´s Ronaldo. And he recently did what no other player in Europe has managed this season, notching two against Barcelona in a shock 3-0 win. " That was my best performance since I came to Spain," he said. " I could even have scored one more to complete my hat-trick. Perhaps at some point in the future, I might get the chance to go back to Old Trafford and put in the same kind of performances over there."
Dan Brennan, Sunday Mirror

Miller´s Crossroads
Liam Miller has until the end of the season to save himself from Sir Alex Ferguson´s purge. The Manchester United boss has admitted that Eric Djemba-Djemba and Kleberson are available while he will loan out Kieran Richardson to Norwich and allowed Chris Eagles to take temporary leave at Watford. Now Miller, who joined on a Bosman free transfer from Celtic only last summer, will come under Fergie´s scrutiny. And unless the midfielder measures up he will be told he can go, with his former club in Glasgow sure to be interested. Miller has failed to make an impression and has fallen behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Darren Fletcher in the pecking order.

Mac United
Middlesbrough could lose England youth full-back Tony McMahon to Manchester United. And the clubs are also discussing a swap deal which would take Stewart Downing to Old Trafford and Eric Djemba-Djemba in the opposite direction. McMahon, who skippered Boro´s FA Youth Cup winning team last season, has rejected a new contract - and that has alerted United.

Manchester United have rejected reports that star winger Cristiano Ronaldo is stalling on contract talks.

The 19-year-old, who scored his third goal of the season in Saturday´s 3-1 Premiership victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, joined the Red Devils in a £12.2m deal from Sporting Lisbon 18 months ago.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted even he has been startled by Ronaldo´s progress since then and despite his tender years he is now regarded as an automatic selection in Ferguson´s first-choice line-up.

Having signed a five-year contract when he initially joined the club, Ronaldo still has well over three seasons remaining on his present deal and United have claimed there is no issue over any renegotiation.

" To suggest there are problems over a new contract is nonsense," said United communications director Phil Townsend.

" Cristiano still has three and a half years left on the contract he signed when he joined us and no talks are planned."

It would be no surprise though if United were to try to extend Ronaldo´s stay in the summer.

The teenager will still be one of the lowest-paid members of Ferguson´s squad and chief executive David Gill will no doubt attempt to bring the Madeira-born player up to an equivalent level with his team-mates.

New Spain target for Prem duo

Arsenal and Manchester United are set to go head to head again for the signature of another Spanish starlet.

This time the Premiership titans´ object of desire is a 14-year-old on the books of Mallorca by the name of Emilio Nsue.

Despite his tender years, Nsue is considered the outstanding young talent at Mallorca and the Balearic outfit have high hopes for his future progress.

Arsenal and United have both tapped into the Spanish market in recent times, and have been alerted to the potential of the teenager.

Given his age, Nsue is not on professional terms and both English clubs are thought to have made proposals to the parents of the youngster.

It is not the first time the two clubs have competed for a Spanish talent with United ultimately winning the race to sign defender Gerard Pique last summer.

The duo are also thought to be heading the race for Sevilla starlet Sergio Ramos ( pictured), although reports in Spain suggest they will face strong competition for Nsue.

Mallorca are desperate to try and fend off interest in their prodigy, while Barcelona are also monitoring the situation

Ron on song
Alex Ferguson reckons Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to really make his mark on the Premiership. The Portuguese youngster has found life difficult in his second season at Old Trafford and Ferguson admitted the player suffered a loss of form. But a break just before Christmas has transformed Ronaldo and he put Manchester United on their way to victory against Aston Villa. He also netted in the FA Cup win at Exeter during the week and Fergie insists his speedy winger is starting to reproduce the form he showed at Euro 2004. The United chief said: " Ronaldo had his best game of the season. He was a real threat to Aston Villa. We´re hoping for him to pick up now. We expected a dip and now he´s come back and you can see the game is coming together."
Staff reporter, The Sun

Rio chasing silverware
Rio Ferdinand wants silverware to finally put the lid on his year of hell. The Manchester United and England defender, 26, has been in sparkling form since returning from an eight-month ban for failing to take a drugs test. United’s defence conceded their first goal in 817 minutes against Aston Villa on Saturday. Ferdinand said: “I want a trophy to put to an end to a year of ups and downs — and a European trophy would be fantastic. I won the Premiership in my first season here and want to do that again but the Champions League is the one I really want.”
Neil Custis, The Sun

Robben´s glad he said ´No´ to United
Arjen Robben insists he does not fear his first visit to Old Trafford since snubbing Manchester United. The Dutch ace looked odds-on to sign for United this time last year after being given a tour of the club. But Chelsea nipped in and stole Robben from under Sir Alex Ferguson´s nose. Robben returns to Old Trafford on Wednesday for the Carling Cup semi-final second leg. " Am I expecting a rough reception at Old Trafford? I don´t know what to expect," said Robben. " All I can say is that I made my decision to go to Chelsea but I don´t have any bad feelings about United."
Danny Fullbrook, Daily Star
