Alex spies eye Timo
Stuttgart’s Timo Hildebrand is the latest keeper to be checked out by Manchester United. Hildebrand, rated Germany’s No.3 behind Oliver Kahn and Jens Lehmann, is out of contract at the end of the season. Chelsea’s Carlo Cudicini could also fit the bill for United but is more likely to return to Italy. United could also revive their interest in Inter Milan’s Francesco Toldo. He has two years remaining on his contract.

Benfica facing a £4m bill for Kleb
Benfica have been told they will have to stump up around £4million to prise Brazil ace Kleberson away from Old Trafford. Portugal’s former European champions have moved in for Manchester United’s frozen-out midfielder, who has been a fringe player over the past 18 months since his £6m arrival from Atletico Paranaense.

Giving Essien shirt shrift so costly for Sir Alex
Manchester United missed out on the new Roy Keane – because of a row over missing kit! And United chief Sir Alex Ferguson now faces the impossible task of raising the cash it would take to outbid Chelsea and Arsenal for Lyon’s £17million-rated Michael Essien – when he could have had him for next to nothing. The Ghanaian arrived at United as a highly-rated 17-year-old five years ago. But after little more than a week at Old Trafford, Essien was sent packing. He had asked if it was okay to take some kit and got permission – only for United to find out he had taken a few more tops, shirts and socks than they thought was right.
Alan Nixon, The People

Battle for new Roy
Manchester United are set to go head-to-head with Real Madrid in the summer to land the midfielder tipped to become the next Roy Keane. Sources in France claim United have already told Bordeaux they are willing to pay £12million for 20-year-old Rio Mavuba. But Madrid have also asked the French club to keep them informed of developments – and have been encouraged by noises from Mavuba that he would prefer La Liga to the Premiership.

Wenger wants Fergie charge

Arsene Wenger has hit back at Sir Alex Ferguson in their furious war of words by insisting that the Manchester United boss should face a disrepute charge.

Wenger is fuming at the Scot´s latest attack on him and feels the United chief is simply stirring up more ill-feeling ahead of the clubs´ league clash at Highbury in February.

Ferguson branded Wenger a ´disgrace´, and claimed the French coach attempted to fight him following United´s 2-0 win at Old Trafford back in October.

After initially claiming he would not comment any further on Ferguson, Wenger has now launched his most scathing attack ever on his United counterpart, and has called on The FA to take action.

" I have no diplomatic relations with him," Wenger blasted.

" The managers have a responsibility to protect the game before the game. But in England you are only punished for what you say after the game.

" Now the whole story starts again. I don´t go into that game. We play football. I am a football manager and I love football above all, no matter what people say.

" For me, what is important is that we have a responsibility before the game and in England it is too easy - and too many people get away with this - to prepare already an explosive.

" That is not in my interests and now I have nothing to say. He says what he wants. It is his responsibility.

" I don´t respond to anything. In England you have a good phrase. It is ´bringing the game into disrepute´. But that is not only after the game, it is as well before a game.

" As far as Ferguson is concerned, one thing is very simple with him. If he has to talk, he talks.

" If he wants to make newspaper articles, he can make newspaper articles.

" It doesn´t matter to me at all. I´m not going to answer any provocation from him any more.

" He does what he likes in England anyway. He can go abroad one day and see how it is."

Charge Fergie
Furious Arsene Wenger wants Alex Ferguson rapped with a disrepute charge. The Arsenal boss accused Manchester United manager Fergie of stoking up ill-feeling ahead of the clubs´ big Highbury crunch on February 1. Shaking with anger, Wenger raged: " He does what he wants, he says what he wants. We are meeting again in a fortnight and managers should have a responsibility to respect the game beforehand. Too many people get away with this — preparing an explosive game. I think you call it ´bringing the game into disrepute´. And it is as relevant before a game as it is after a game."

Ref Praises Rooney
Wayne Rooney is unlikely to face an FA probe over his Anfield goal celebrations. Rooney, 19, cupped his hands to his ears in front of the Kop after hitting Manchester United’s 21st-minute winner against Liverpool on Saturday. That led to one irate fan throwing a mobile phone at the England striker. Referee Steve Bennett confirmed he would mention Rooney’s celebration in his match report to the FA — but praised the hitman’s restraint in the face of repeated taunts from Liverpool fans. Bennett said: " There was a lot of hostility towards him. He did very well not to react."

Joe: It´s Our Title
Joe Cole reckons Chelsea are on the march to the Premiership crown. Blues are 10 points clear at the top after their 2-0 victory at Tottenham and Arsenal’s shock 1-0 defeat at Bolton. Chelsea midfielder Cole, 23, said: " We’ve taken a big step toward winning the title. Those results really put the pressure on Arsenal now. We are 10 points clear." And Chelsea are still 11 points ahead of third-placed Manchester United.

Benfica confirm Kleberson interest
by Adam Marshall - created on 16 Jan 2005

Benfica have offered Kleberson an escape route from Manchester United but The Red Devils are reluctant to let their Brazilian misfit leave.

The South American has failed to justify the £7 million price-tag that accompanied his move from Atletico Paranaense and was last seen getting injured in the Carling Cup win over Arsenal.

Benfica coach Giovanni Trapattoni sees Kleberson as an alternative for top target Maxi Lopez, whose move from River Plate has stalled.

´Trap´ wants to sign the United man on loan but Sir Alex Ferguson is not keen on the proposal.

" He is one of the best foreign midfielders," Trapattoni told Record.

" Already, we spoke and we are going to see if we have the possibility to hire him.

" The player wants to come, the businessmen also but not the club.

" Negotiations are not always easy but the deal is not at a standstill."

Trapattoni has other targets, including Liverpool´s Igor Biscan, according to Portuguese sources, but Kleberson would perhaps welcome a chance to prove his worth at Estadio da Luz.

United would prefer a permanent transfer and, if they do relent and allow the midfielder to leave, it must be with at least a view to a concrete sale.

The World Cup winner is still sidelined with the ankle injury he sustained against Arsenal´s under-strength side on December 1

Keane: We won´t give up

Manchester United captain Roy Keane insists the club will never concede defeat in their quest to overhaul Chelsea.

The Red Devils trail the current Premiership table-toppers by 11 points and are desperately hoping for Chelsea to suffer a blip.

A 1-0 win at Liverpool on Saturday ensured United briefly closed the advantage on The Blues, who responded with a 2-0 success at Tottenham.

Despite the yawning gap between the two teams, United skipper Keane is in no mood to gift-wrap the Premiership title to the big-spending London club.

" We will keep fighting to the end," Keane told MUTV. " We are Manchester United, that is what we do.

" It is always nice to beat Liverpool, especially at Anfield. The win keeps us in the frame.

" The clean sheets recently give us a lot of confidence. It is very important to keep winning.

" If we are keeping clean sheets it gives us confidence because with the players we have, we always feel we will create chances and score the odd goal.

" If gives us a great foundation to go forward and win games."

Keane almost broke his goal drought, which stretches back to the start of November 2003, against Liverpool when he rattled the crossbar after Wayne Rooney had opened the scoring.

But the Irish firebrand is happy to continue missing the target, providing United keep picking up the points to maintain the pressure on Chelsea.

He added: " Not scoring doesn´t bother me in the slightest, the priority is to win football matches.

" It would have been nice to get the second but we have had two and three-goal leads here before and it hasn´t worked out so we are just pleased to get the win."
