Rio To Get New Deal
Rio Ferdinand will be handed a new five-year contract by Manchester United at the end of this season. The England defender signed a five-year deal when he moved to Old Trafford from Leeds for £30million in July 2002. But the club want to make sure there is no messing over his long-term future and plan to get a new contract sorted this summer. Ferdinand’s reputation has been enhanced since joining United despite an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test. Recently boss Alex Ferguson said: “Rio has been in incredible form. He is the best centre-half in the world."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Rio Forever: Keep Ferdinand Until 2010, Alex Tells United
Manchester United are ready to offer Rio Ferdinand a contract designed to keep him at Old Trafford until 2010. England defender Ferdinand has two-and-a-half seasons left on the £70,000-a-week deal he signed for a record £30million in the summer of 2002. But such has been the 26-year-old´s development since he returned in September from an eight-month ban for missing a drugs test that United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has told his board they must tie him down further as soon as possible.
Ian Ladyman, Daily Mail

The Daily Express report a slightly different angle...

You Can Kiss Rio Goodbye
Rio Ferdinand will be offered a new contract worth a staggering £25million this summer by Manchester United - but it will not be enough if the England defender opts to take the best deal on offer. The Daily Express can reveal that Chelsea are prepared to better United´s five-year deal by £1m a year in order to get their man. That translates to more than £6m a year, or £125,000 a week. All the early indications are that United cannot match the salary earmarked by Chelsea and they are not trying to head off only Roman Abramovich and Co. Ferdinand is also wanted by Arsenal, who will similarly struggle to match Ambramovich´s terms, plus Real Madrid and Barcelona - who have deeper pockets than the Gunners.

Internazionale are carefully monitoring Ryan Giggs´s contractual dispute with Manchester United.

The Welsh winger has been in wonderful form for United since being deployed in a more central attacking role and sparkled again in the New Year´s Day win at Middlesbrough.

Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to retain the long-serving star but United´s policy is to offer one-year extensions to players in their thirties. Giggs is seeking a two-year deal and, despite the prospect of there being an option to remain at Old Trafford for an additional 12 months, talks have stalled.

The 31-year-old wants to remain with The Red Devils and all parties are determined to thrash out an agreement.

Nevertheless, Inter are long-term admirers of Giggs and he is being viewed as an alternative to Aparecido Cesar if their bid for the Lazio wide man stalls.

Nerazzurri supremo Massimo Moratti is known to be a great fan of the player and has tried to buy him in the past.

If Cesar does not arrive from Lazio then the expectation in Milan is that Inter will bid for Giggs´s services providing the Welshman decides to sever his ties with United.

However, Inter are understood to be awaiting developments as their belief is that the former England Schoolboys captain will stay in Manchester.

Rio would command record fee - Thomas

Roman Abramovich would need to smash the world record transfer fee to lure Rio Ferdinand to Stamford Bridge.

That is the view of former Manchester United and Chelsea star Mickey Thomas, who also thinks Ferdinand would move south for one reason only - money.

Fresh speculation linking Ferdinand with a move to Jose Mourinho´s outfit has erupted, just as Manchester United are about to open informal discussions with the England man´s advisors over the possibility of extending his current contract, which still has two-and-a-half years to run.

Ferdinand is viewed as the leader of United´s next generation and has recently become an automatic choice as captain any time Roy Keane is absent from the Red Devils´ line-up.

Yet the Old Trafford hierarchy are acutely aware Abramovich´s vast wealth means he can eclipse any financial offer they can make for the 25-year-old, who cost a British record £29.1m when he moved to United from Leeds in 2002.

But Thomas does not believe cash in itself should be a reason for Ferdinand to quit. And even if United chief executive David Gill decides the defender is not totally committed to his current club, the former Welsh international reckons Chelsea would have to eclipse the £45.6m that took Zinedine Zidane from Juventus to Real Madrid in 2001.

" Everyone has a price I suppose but I think Ferdinand´s would be well over £40m, probably more that Zidane cost Real Madrid," said Thomas, who watches all United´s games in his role as expert pundit for Century Radio.

" People might think a figure like that is stupid or ridiculous but I think it is a realistic assessment of his worth to Manchester United.

" Everyone knows it took Rio a while to adjust after his move from Leeds but since he came back from suspension in September he has been consistently outstanding.

" These rumours about Chelsea being interested in him have been around before but if you look at the situation honestly, there is only one reason why Rio would want to leave a club of Manchester United´s stature for Chelsea - and that is money.

" I like Chelsea as a club and they are clearly gearing themselves up to be major players but they do not have United´s history or stature within the game.

" Sir Alex Ferguson has already suggested the role he sees Rio playing in the future by choosing him as captain so often and I see how he would be bettering himself by giving that up for what, in world terms, is a lesser club."

While losing existing players they want to keep is rare for United, the club found themselves in a very similar situation with David Beckham two years ago.

At no stage during informal talks did then chief executive Peter Kenyon believe the England skipper was totally committed to extending his stay at Old Trafford, so, unprepared to let Beckham run his contract down, they accepted a bid from Barcelona.

Eventually, Beckham decided to join Real Madrid but having been down the path before, there is no reason to believe United would change their tactics should Ferdinand not offer any assurance over the next few months that he is prepared to remain in Manchester.
