Giggs spots another goal
By Matt Dickinson
Manchester United 2 Bolton Wanderers 0
HAVING TO EARN A NEW contract might seem tough on a man with eight Premiership medals, but it is having the desired effect on Ryan Giggs. Manchester United’s most decorated player had looked to be resting on his laurels for much of 2004, but a run of sparkling form has, perhaps not coincidentally, followed the board’s decision to offer him only a one-year deal.
Had Roman Abramovich not made Arjen Robben an offer he could not refuse to come to Chelsea, Giggs, 31, might be under even closer scrutiny as he seeks to extend his long association with United. Yesterday, though, he illuminated Old Trafford with a volleyed goal and the swaying runs that make him such a rare and cherished species.
Giggs, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes, who chipped in with his seventh goal in as many appearances, are the United players doing the most to keep Sir Alex Ferguson’s team in touch with Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the Barclays Premiership. Perhaps disorientated by his new role on the left, Wayne Rooney is a passenger and there was a moment just before half-time when he threatened to become a liability.
Accused of going to ground too easily by Tal Ben Haim, the teenager pushed the Israel captain in the face with the palm of his hand. Suddenly it was the big defender’s turn to crash to the floor. Even Sam Allardyce, the Bolton Wanderers manager, admitted that Ben Haim could be accused of play-acting, but he was also entitled to point out that Rooney had been living dangerously.
“I think he [Ben Haim] went down rather too easily but, with today’s rules, had the referee seen it he would have had to send Rooney off,” Allardyce said. “So he’s pretty lucky to get away with it.”
It is not the first time in recent weeks that Rooney’s temper has been a talking point. His rage during England’s friendly against Spain in Madrid also came frothing to the surface because he was playing poorly.
He was fortunate that the referee was Dermot Gallagher, who seems to book players only when they have committed grievous bodily harm. “That was as good a performance [from an official] as I have seen this season,” Ferguson said, grateful that Gallagher had also ignored Keane’s scything tackle on El-Hadji Diouf, which was one of the most obviously deliberates hacks of the season.
In Rooney’s case, justice might yet catch up with the striker if the FA watches a replay, while Ben Haim could not complain if he, too, is charged. “I have seen the monitor and it’s embarrassing, actually,” Ferguson said. “The Bolton player, deary, deary me. He should be embarrassed about that. It was absolutely nothing. It is foolish that this sort of thing is creeping into the game.”
Otherwise the Scot was content as United took their haul to 19 points out of the last possible 21. It is a better run even than Chelsea, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. As against Fulham a fortnight ago, United failed to make the most of early dominance. It cost them victory at Craven Cottage, but there was little belief about the visiting team yesterday once Giggs had secured the early lead.
Only ten minutes had elapsed when Gabriel Heinze’s cross eluded the Bolton defence and reached Giggs at the far post. His hooked volley beat Jussi Jaaskelainen.
The Finland goalkeeper was on fine form, but Allardyce does not have too many players he can rely upon at present. Bolton had never lost five consecutive Premiership matches before yesterday and, for a troubled manager struggling to make sense of such a downturn in fortunes, it is not the only worrying statistic.
“We knew we had to aim for 11 or 12 clean sheets at the start of the season but, after 19 games, we’ve only had two,” Allardyce said. “We were winning games, but I kept warning the players that it would catch up on us and it caught up devastatingly, because we can’t even draw games at the moment. We are in a deep hole and we have to dig ourselves out.”
They might have been well beaten yesterday but United eased up after the bright opening and Jaaskelainen made some good saves, most notably late on at the feet of Giggs.
The winger said he should have scored from that one-on-one, but he atoned in the 89th minute when, from his dash, the ball fell to Scholes to shoot into the bottom corner from just outside the area. “The gaffer gave me a rest and, ever since then, I have been feeling great,” Giggs said. Nothing to do with trying to earn a two-year extension to his contract, obviously.
Gde forme pr Scholes et Giggs en ce moment...
Talking Point: Smith Midfield Role
Smith: Mixed Views On A Midfield Role
Blurred role: Smith has been suggested as an ideal long-term replacement for Roy Keane.
Your Shout: Is Smith A Future Reds Midfielder?
MU.tv Feature: Is Roy Keane Irreplaceable?
Desire, determination, commitment to the cause and an inclination for making 50/50 crunching tackles. All have been attributed to United captain Roy Keane at one stage or another during his Reds career.
In recent months, however, Reds have witnessed a player with tenacity not unlike the Irish midfielder’s almost pugnacious approach to the game.
A case in point arrived in the recent match with Fulham: Cottagers defender Sylvain Legwinski looked in very little danger inside his own penalty area, but as he shaped to clear the ball he was dispossessed by an brutally direct tackle from Alan Smith. The Reds forward went on to finish neatly.
Sir Alex Ferguson said after the game: " Players like Henry, Ronaldinho or Ronaldo can make goals by beating men. But to create a goal with a tackle is incredible."
Smith has fast become a fans´ favourite at Old Trafford. But his dedicated approach has instigated a common notion that Smith could perhaps take over from Keane in the pivotal holding midfield role.
The idea has clearly entered Sir Alex Ferguson’s thoughts; midfield slots against Crewe, Birmingham and Lyon this season are evidence of that. As you would expect, Smith would play at left-back and still give every ounce of effort.
" I think if you can play in a number of positions it does help you and it can help the manager," he said recently. " I have enjoyed playing in the centre of midfield when asked to. Playing alongside Roy Keane was great - they don´t get much better than him."
But, could he eventually usurp United’s skipper and emerge as the Reds’ next midfield driving force? Here, three former United players join in the discussion…
Frank Stapleton: United Striker 1981-1987
The idea has been mentioned that Alan Smith can go in the centre of midfield – I don’t think it is there.
People look at it and think that because he is such a good tackler and gets stuck in, he can do a job in midfield. Being able to tackle as a forward is different to what it takes to play in midfield.
As Roy Keane did at the top of his game, you want a dynamic midfielder that will give the team a lot of energy, win you the ball and be able to start passing moves and then get into the box to support the team going forward. At the top of his game, Roy Keane was doing everything – all of those roles in midfield.
I don’t think that comes naturally to Alan Smith. He will work hard, and if you ask him to go and do that job he won’t let you down. But, in the long-term I don’t think it is right.
The question is: Where is the manager going to find somebody as influential as Roy Keane? What he perhaps has to do is bring in somebody that could eventually get there. When Roy Keane first came here, he had a good reputation from his time with Nottingham Forest, but he became a much more rounded player after joining United.
Smith In Midfield? Verdict: No. Alan Smith’s committed style attracts people to say he can do the job on a regular basis. He’s never let anyone down and he has proved he can do a job in a midfield role. But all his natural instincts are as a front player.
Wilf McGuinness: United Midfielder 1955-1960
He´s a very talented player and, for me, he´s been one of our players of the season so far. He´s just a great player to have in the team because he´s always involved in the game.
I think it would be a good idea to have a look at him in midfield; whenever he comes on the field he always gives absolutely everything and that is an important ingredient.
His tackling is spot on and he has a similar passion displayed by Roy Keane down the years at Old Trafford.
It is a crucial position. Sometimes when we play 4-4-2 we can get overrun in midfield. Ronaldo needs to try and hold onto the ball a bit more because we´ve got caught out in midfield when he´s lost possession in the past. So the five in midfield is certainly an option, and Smith could fit into that.
Smith In Midfield? Verdict: Yes. I think it´s well worth a try to play Smith in midfield. He´s capable of playing anywhere, whether it be upfront or out on the wing or in midfield and you know he would never let you down.
Lou Macari: United Striker 1972-1984
It´s a bit like a big centre-forward who is good in the air. People say, ‘in an emergency, play him in defence’. They go back into defence, but they don’t always have the awareness needed to be a defender. I think it is a similar situation with Alan Smith. We’ve seen him come here and show great levels of effort and commitment.
But in that midfield area, especially in the Premiership, there are players all around you and it takes a clever, specialised player to move the ball on. A Premiership midfielder has to know where the ball’s next port of call is before he has even received a pass.
People speculate about Steven Gerrard leaving Liverpool, but I doubt whether he would come here. I don’t think Liverpool would sell him to United. I´m not sure Manchester United have got the money to buy Steven Gerrard – so I think we should dismiss talk of that right away.
Others have been mentioned - Scott Parker, for example. But, nobody knows players better than the manager at the club; Mourinho hasn’t considered him. I would say that is because he is not happy with certain aspects of his play. I don’t think he’s the one for Old Trafford.
Smith In Midfield? Verdict: No. I’m not so sure Alan Smith can do it, but I am also not so sure he would want to do it either. I don’t think Alan Smith will replace Roy Keane.
Keane: Players need thick skin
Manchester United captain Roy Keane has dished out a New Year warning to club colleagues that they need to be thick-skinned to handle criticism if The Red Devils are to go on to win The Premiership this year.
In a trademark tirade he has warned them that on-pitch rollickings are to be expected, and are part and parcel of life at the club. He singled out certain players, such as United´s 19-year-old Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, and told them they will need to develop a thick skin if they are to cope with the criticism from colleagues.
The young Portuguese star has looked miffed when he´s been on the end of some ´hair-dryer´ style bursts from Gary Neville and Alan Smith recently, especially when some of his final-third wastefulness has cost The Red Devils dear.
Ronaldo has had a disappointing season so far and has scored only one goal. However boss Sir Alex Ferguson maintains that he is happy with him and that he is set to stay in the side for the next game versus Aston Villa.
Keane has insisted that such on-pitch dressing downs are good, telling the Daily Express: " It´s healthy. It´s important that if you see a player not doing his job, then you tell them.
" That´s important at any level; it doesn´t matter if you´re playing at Manchester United or on a Sunday morning. That is what you are in the game for - to win and to help your team-mates out."
Keane made reference to his formative years at the club when he was regularly on the end of vitriol from Bryan Robson and Steve Bruce.
" People probably hear me getting on the backs of other players, but it´s a man´s game and you have to be prepared to take the criticism as well as the praise.
" It´s just a case of a senior player trying to help out a younger team-mate. But it´s not just the senior players who have a go - sometimes it is the younger lads having a go at the senior players, and rightly so," he added.
Prem duo warned over Ramos
The chase for Sevilla starlet Sergio Ramos looks set to hot up during the January transfer window.
The teenage full back is a target for both Arsenal and Manchester United after his superb displays this term.
The 18-year-old broke into Sevilla´s first team at the start of the season and has gone on to establish himself as an undisputed regular.
His progress has not gone unnoticed by either Arsene Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson who have both brought Spanish youngsters to The Premiership recently.
Both clearly see the Spain Under-21 star as the long-term candidate for their respective right back slots and are ready to try and convince Sevilla to part with the young talent.
Ramos signed a new contract with the Primera outfit earlier in the season which took his release fee to £12 million.
However, that figure is due to rise to £18 million once he has made three more first-team appearances, and his father Jose Maria Ramos - who also acts as his agent - has warned interested suitors they will have to move quickly or see his price soar.
" Sergio may play in the league games on January 9 and 16 and then in the Spanish Cup," he stated. " Then he will be worth £6 million more.
" Arsenal had virtually done the deal four months ago.
" They spoke to the club but couldn´t finalise matters. Perhaps they will now.
" Sevilla say my son´s not for sale but everyone has his price. It was the same for Jose Antonio Reyes."
everton a perdu c´est l´occasion de prendre la troisième place ce soir.
