Europe Is Just The Tonic, Says Former Reds Boss
Wilf McGuinness believes being drawn against Italian giants AC Milan in the first knock-out round of the Champions League will bring out the best in United.
The Reds will entertain Milan at Old Trafford on Wednesday 23 February, before heading over to the San Siro two weeks later. And McGuinness insists he has every confidence in United.
" Past experience tells us that we play our best football against the top teams," explained the former United manager.
" Sometimes you’re better to play one of the bigger teams earlier on in the competition because you know all about them and also know what you’ve got to do to beat them.
" If you’re going to go all the way in the competition you’ve got to play the best teams at some stage, so why not get them out of the way sooner rather than later."
Despite their stuttering league form, United have looked much more solid in the Champions League, collecting 11 points from a possible 18 during the first group stages and scoring 14 goals along the way.
The only real blot on their European copybook so far this season has been the 3-0 defeat away to Fenerbahce earlier this month.
" I really think it could be our year this time round," insists McGuinness. " We’re certainly in with a far better chance of winning the European Cup than the league at the moment.
" There are a lot of tremendous teams in the competition; the Italians have hit form, while the Spaniards are always a threat.
" But I really believe we’ve got a great chance and we’ve certainly got the ability to score more goals than most teams we come up against," notes the former Busby Babe.
United´s European goalscoring prowess was on full show in the group stages; with 14 goals, only Group D rivals Olympique Lyonnais, who scored 17, found the net more times than Reds.
" The biggest competition any player wants to win is the Champions League," adds Wilf. " Hopefully we can go all the way again this season."

Fergie blasts refs
Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester United are still being punished by referees for beating Arsenal.
Ferguson has previously said that United were not getting deserved penalty decision because of the dubious spot kick Wayne Rooney earned to sink The Gunners.
The Scot says that he still believes his side are not getting the decisions inside the box because of that game at Old Trafford.
" Right now we don´t seem to be getting a break," said Ferguson.
" We went to Portsmouth and there was no way that we would get anything from the referee after the Arsenal game.
" If you think about the penalty kick they were given and the two that were turned down when we played City, they got a very, very soft penalty.
" So we are suffering because of that. We´ve been penalised for beating Arsenal, there is no question about that.
" But we´ve just got to bite the bullet and move on. It won´t always be that way because your luck changes."
Agent: Carroll will sign
Roy Carroll is set to commit his future to Manchester United, according to the keeper´s agent Francis Martin.
The Northern Ireland international has been keeping goal for United since ousting Tim Howard from the first team, but has reportedly been concerned that Sir Alex Ferguson might be eyeing a new number one and that he currently earns less than Howard.
With Carroll free to leave next summer, a number of clubs have been watching the situation closely.
However, the former Wigan Athletic man has made fresh salary demands to the Old Trafford outfit and Martin is hopeful a deal can be struck.
" We have put a new proposal to the club and now we are waiting for their response," he told The Manchester Evening News.
" It has dragged on a little longer than we´d have hoped, but it has got to be right for all parties.
" He is not asking to be the highest-paid player at the club. He just wants to be on a par with some of the senior players at the club.
" We will reach an agreement.
" Roy is really happy at United and I am sure a solution can be found.
" It will be resolved. Probably after Christmas and New Year, something will be sorted."
The 27-year-old joined United from Wigan for £3 million after previously representing Hull City.

Keane eyes longer United stay
Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has revealed he would like to extend his contract at Old Trafford.
The Republic of Ireland international has 18 months to run on his current deal and it was widely expected he may hang up his boots when his contract expires.
However, Keane believes he can carry on playing and hopes that he can win a new contract at United.
" I could not be happier at the club and my biggest challenge is to keep going as long as I can," Keane told the Daily Mail.
" I have another year and a half left and I intend to see that out. If I am still able to play on after that, then I hope it will be at United.
" If I feel as good as this physically in a year´s time, then I will hopefully try to play on.
" As long as United want me, then I´m happy to stay.
" I don´t like looking too far ahead as things can change quickly.
" But if, please God, I can stay fit and feel strong and doing okay, then it´s possible I could stay.
" I hope that there will be some more highlights to come in my career with this club."
Keane ready for 2005 charge
Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has sent out a warning to their rivals, insisting The Red Devils will be a force to be feared in 2005.
United have sunk down The Premiership behind London´s leading lights Chelsea and Arsenal.
However, Keane is insistent that his club are set to mount a strong challenge on all fronts over the coming 12 months.
" The foundations of the team and the club are rock solid," he said.
" Where to judge it is on the football pitch and hopefully we can do that in some of the big games coming up.
" Any top team are going to have periods when they are not playing as well as they can but I feel that the last month or two we are getting stronger and stronger.
" We´re aware we are chasing three teams ( Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton) now and we can´t afford any slip-ups.
" I think it is an important second half of the season and if and when Chelsea slip up we are ready to pounce.
" We have got to focus on ourselves, keep playing well and keep scoring goals.
" There are a lot of points at stake and we have got four difficult matches coming up.
" If we manage to win those games we will see what happens.
" We have bought one or two good young players and hopefully they will get stronger in the new year."
Keane was also spared time to praise Chelsea´s recent form.
" The way Chelsea are playing you have to give credit where it´s due," he said.
" Their team is a lot better than the ones over the last few years.
" Their manager this year ( Jose Mourinho) seems to be stronger mentally but only time will tell if they can handle the pressure."
Carroll: Pay and I´ll stay
Manchester United keeper Roy Carroll has demanded an improved offer at Old Trafford - to keep him out of the clutches of Arsenal. Arsene Wenger knows the 27-year-old - out of contract next summer - has been refusing all season to accept United´s terms. However, Carroll´s agent Francis Martin insists the player wants to stay at Old Trafford - but only if he gets a big pay rise, a wish United are unlikely to grant. Martin revealed: " We have put new proposals to the club and we are now waiting for their response. It has dragged on for too long, but it has to be right for all parties."

Scramos
Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson are heading for a new bust-up over £8million-rated Seville whizkid Sergio Ramos. The feuding bosses of Arsenal and Manchester United are both chasing Spanish football’s latest sensation and last night sent scouts to keep an eye on the 18-year-old. Ramos is Seville’s brightest prospect following on from Jose Reyes, who joined the Gunners last season for £21m. He has already established himself as a regular in Seville’s first team, starting 15 out of 17 La Liga games including last night’s clash against Real Madrid, who are also monitoring him.

United captain warns Chelsea: We´re Keane
Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has told leaders Chelsea: " We´re ready to pounce." With United fourth, nine points behind the Blues, Keane said: " I feel, in the last month or two, we are getting stronger and stronger. We´re aware we are chasing three teams now and we can´t afford any slip-ups. I think it is an important second half of the season and if Chelsea slip up, we are ready to pounce. There are a lot of points at stake and we have got four difficult matches coming up. If we manage to win those games we will see what happens."

Give me a deal
Roy Keane last night broke his silence on his Manchester United future and revealed for the first time that he has his sights firmly set on a new contract. " I could not be happier at the club and my biggest challenge is to keep going as long as I can"´ he said. " I have another year and a half left and I intend to see that out. If I am still able to play on after that, then I hope it will be at United. As long as United want me, then I´m happy to stay. I hope that there will be some more highlights to come in my career with this club."

Dear Fergie, Merry Xmas
Gabriel Heinze has thanked Alex Ferguson for letting him “chill out” in Argentina. Fergie sent Heinze on a sunshine break to recharge his batteries for the second half of the season. The Argentine defender, 26, played in the Olympic Games and the Copa America in the summer. And after returning to a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Crespo near Buenos Aires, he said: “It’s been a hectic year and I really needed to chill a bit. The truth is I didn’t expect to be given the holiday and I’m very thankful to the technical staff and to Ferguson in particular. I’m so appreciative and I want to make a point of being grateful for the gesture. Ferguson has been marvellous to me ever since I arrived and it’s a pleasure to be coached by him. I’ve felt comfortable since my first day. I’ve been given everything I needed to do my job well and treated in a first class way.”

Cough up cash or lose your Ed
Edu will have showdown talks with Arsenal in January. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger told Edu this weekend that he is still a major part of his plans, but the North London club has still not improved their contract offer. Manchester United, Valencia and Barcelona are still following the situation.

United nagging doubt
Manchester United major shareholders JP McManus and John Magnier are faced with the biggest of dilemmas this Christmas. Selling their 28% plus stake in the club for £3-plus per share to American predator Malcolm Glazer would represent a staggering £80million profit on their Old Trafford investment, which makes business sense. But the Irish racing tycoons are known to be seriously concerned about the potential backlash from irate supporter groups if they sold out to the unpopular Glazer, especially if it impacts on their beloved Cheltenham National Hunt Festival in March.

Fergie gives charity boost
Sir Alex Ferguson´s scheduled appearance with GMTV presenter and United fan Eamon Holmes on the celebrity version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire on Christmas Eve only suggests the pair didn´t hit the jackpot. But any money they won - and they are understood to have done very respectably - has been donated to the children´s charity set up in memory of Fergie´s mother, the Elizabeth Hardy Ferguson Foundation.
