Manchester United would be the outsiders to win any bidding war for Gerrard given the history that exists between Anfield and Old Trafford. Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he didn´t see Gerrard´s midweek Champions League heroics - " I was concentrating on our game at Fenerbahce" - but the United boss sees the Liverpool skipper as the only man capable of filling the void that will eventually be left by Roy Keane.
Back in May, Ferguson declared: " To me, Gerrard is Roy Keane. He is where Keane was when Roy came to us in 1993.
" He has become the most influential player in England, bar none."
Gerrard knows he risks alienating every Liverpool supporter if he even contemplates moving to United.
But Ferguson was delighted that Liverpool stayed in the Champions League - because it gives him more time to put together a transfer package for Gerrard after being told there is no more money in the transfer kitty.
And the United boss was also able to convince Gerrard´s close friend Wayne Rooney to swap Merseyside for Manchester last summer.

I´ll be back
OLE Gunnar Solskjaer has targeted the first day of next season for his Manchester United comeback.
And the Norwegian striker has revealed the two biggest motivations to fight against his career-threatening injury - the fans´ unwavering support and the chance to play with Wayne Rooney.
Solskjaer just recently discarded his crutches after a second operation on his troublesome knee in August, and says: " I can´t wait to get back. The surgeon told me it would take anything between nine and 15 months when he did the operation.
" If I look at the beginning of next pre-season that is nine or 10 months from the op, so I am hoping to be back on day one of next season. If I can do that I will be thrilled.
" I am walking, swimming and getting on the exercise bike now, but not running yet. I hope to start that in the New Year.
" I can even drive my own car now, and that is a relief."
Solskjaer revealed how the supporters have given him a huge lift in his battle for fitness.
His name has been sung at every United match since the extent of his troubles began, and fans made a banner for the Stretford End that reads " 20LEGEND", with his name picked out in red.
" Every time they sing my name it sticks in my heart and gives me great motivation," said the 31-year-old Solskjaer, who has played just 13 times since picking up the injury against Panathinaikos 14 months ago.
" Sir Alex Ferguson is almost my second dad because he has been so good to me. When there was an offer for me and I said I didn´t want to go, he supported me."
While he has been injured, three new strikers have arrived at the club, in Louis Saha, Alan Smith and Rooney.
Solskjaer believes all three have strengthened the squad, but reserved special praise for Rooney:
" I want to play with him," added Solskjaer. " That is also an inspiration for me to return, because he is a world-class player and will be fantastic in years to come.
" He will learn so much from playing with Ryan Giggs, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand.
" Wayne is made for Manchester United and, hopefully, I will get to play a few games with him."
Solskjaer has written off any chance of returning this season, but believes the current crop of players have a few surprises in store for those who have already written them off.
He said: " I have a feeling that this could be our year in the Champions League again."
Ole y croit c´est bien ^^
Preview: Fulham v Manchester United
Tom Tyrrell
SIR Alex Ferguson hopes the sweet smelling Andrew Cole has a stinker tomorrow night.
The Season of Goodwill has started with the Manchester United manager revealing that his pre-Christmas wish list includes an off-night for the former Old Trafford favourite as the Reds face Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Sir Alex means no malice, but rates Cole as the main threat to United´s bid to gain ground on Premiership pace-setters Chelsea and Arsenal and says the player he bought from Newcastle almost 10 years ago has lost none of his predatory prowess.
" I still think he is one of the best strikers in the business. I watched their game against Chelsea last week and he was so unlucky. He could have had a hat-trick. In the box he is lively."
Cole, who left Old Trafford for Blackburn in December 2001 after playing his part in a long string of successes including the 1999 treble winning campaign, signed for Fulham in July, taking over from Louis Saha who had joined United six months earlier.
Ferguson sees the switch as a career boost for the 33 year old: " His move from Blackburn came at the right time because obviously he and Graeme ( Souness) were not hitting it off and I think Andy is the type who needs the support of his manager. He did great for us."
The United boss has fond memories of Cole´s days at Old Trafford when he earned himself a reputation for being as sharp off the field as he was on it.
" Whenever I think about Andy, I think of him as being immaculate. He was always immaculately clean and well dressed and spot on all the time. Every time you saw him he almost looked manicured.
" He takes great pride in his appearance which is a great lesson to all players. But I hope he has a stinker tomorrow!"
Why did Cole move on ?
" He left because we had signed Ruud van Nistelrooy and Andy can´t think about being a sub. That is all down to his personal pride. I wasn´t sure that he and Ruud would be a partnership so it was a combination of me signing van Nistelrooy and Andy wanting to be first choice every time.
" It was much the same when we signed Andy and Sparky ( Mark Hughes) didn´t want to be considered a sub so he left. It isn´t that it is a disagreement, more that they want first team football and you can´t guarantee it."
While Cole seems certain to face his former club, United have doubts about van Nistelrooy who will take a fitness test on a calf strain.
Nightmare
With a busy programme of games coming up Sir Alex is taking no risks: " Ruud thinks he will be fit for but we have to be dead sure because these calf injuries can be a nightmare. They can keep on resurfacing and what happened was he played with it, and never said, and it got to the point where he started to complain and we had to take him off in games.
" When that happens, if you don´t get to the root of it then every time he plays you are left wondering how long he is going to last. We are going to make sure that it is done right. If he isn´t fit for Monday he will certainly be fit for Saturday against Crystal Palace.
" We will make the decision for him if there is any doubt at all and any sign of the injury we won´t play him , but he thinks he is all right."
Saha misses the chance to face his former club as he continues to have treatment on a knee injury, and Wes Brown is out with Achilles strain.
Un transfert:
