Arsene Wenger has admitted Manchester United deserve their place in the Carling Cup semi-finals - but he does not think much of the tactics used to win it.

After falling behind to lone striker David Bellion´s 19-second strike, Wenger´s youthful Arsenal side lacked the physical presence to force their way through a United rearguard reinforced by a five-man midfield.

The visitors managed just one meaningful shot in the entire 90 minutes, when Tim Howard saved Jermaine Pennant´s free-kick, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson´s side to coast towards a two-legged semi-final tussle with Chelsea next month.

" At the moment in England we are moving towards a trend where teams play five across the middle and one up front," observed the Frenchman.

" It is very efficient but it is more boring for the spectators.

" The system is working for Manchester United in the Premiership so they used it with their reserve team as well.

" In the second half they were happy not to come out and to win 1-0, and we lacked the weight or experience to break them down."

Selon " L´Equipe" de vendredi, le club de la capitale cherche à se positionner pour le recrutement d´un attaquant rapide et puissant en vue du prochain marché d´hiver. Il étudie de près les pistes menant à deux buteurs en délicatesse avec leur corps et leur temps de jeu ces derniers mois : Shabani Nonda ( Monaco) et Louis Saha ( Manchester United).

Meilleur buteur de la L1 en 2002/2003, le Congolais de Monaco ne rejouera pas en 2004 en raison d´un claquage à la cuisse droite. Son très gros salaire est hors de portée pour le PSG, mais la fin très proche de son contrat ( juin 2005) et la confiance relative de Deschamps à son égard pourrait sensiblement rabaisser le montant de son transfert. L´Equipe parle d´une indemnité de 1,5 million d´euros pour celui que Lyon avait vainement cherché à acquérir à l´été 2003.

La piste menant à Louis Saha serait encore plus chaude. Blessé deux fois avec l´équipe de France cette saison, l´ex-joueur messin doit faire face à la concurrence de Van Nistelrooy et Rooney à Manchester United, où il a été transféré il y a un an contre 18,6 millions d´euros. Il veut s´imposer, mais son club ne serait pas opposé à l´idée de le prêter en prenant en charge une partie du salaire.

Réaliser une de ces deux opérations serait évidemment facilité, pour le PSG, par le départ de Danijel Ljuboja, dont certains journaux espagnols persistent à dire qu´il intéresse le FC Barcelone pour un transfert ferme de 4,6 millions d´euros. D´autres clubs étrangers seraient aussi intéressés. C´est pourtant un autre joueur, Modeste M´Bami, qui intéresse le plus les recruteurs européens, ce qui gêne davantage Vahid Halilhodzic, dont le Camerounais est un homme de confiance sur et en dehors du terrain.

Selon " Le Parisien", un club français et un club étranger qui pourrait être Chelsea, se sont positionnés sur l´ex-Sedanais, sans émettre d´offre à ce jour. Bartholomew Ogbeche, Selim benachour, Felipe Teixeira et Hocine Ragued devraient aussi se trouver sur le marché en janvier.

Kleberson Hit By Ankle Injury

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Kleberson will be out of action until the New Year after twisting an ankle against Arsenal.

The Brazilian midfielder suffered the injury ten minutes from time in United´s Carling Cup quarter-final win at Old Trafford.

”He could be out for three or four weeks," Ferguson told reporters at his Friday press briefing.

" It’s an ankle injury. I don’t think we will see Kleberson or Louis Saha until the New Year.”

The injury is another blow for Kleberson who has found first team appearances few and far between this season.

Gary Neville missed the 3-0 win over West Brom last weekend with a bout of flu, a virus that has affected a number of first-team players at the club.

However, the Reds right-back is likely to make his 430th start for the club against Southampton on Saturday.

" Apart from Kleberson and Saha, everyone is fit. Gary Neville had a terrible bout of virus and flu recently. He is back training, so hopefully he’ll return against Southampton."

Fergie questions Carroll advice

Sir Alex Ferguson believes goalkeeper Roy Carroll is being ill-advised by his management team.

The former Wigan Athletic shot-stopper is out of contract at the end of the season, and is stalling on putting pen-to-paper on a new deal at Old Trafford.

Ferguson is keen for Carroll to commit his future to the Premiership giants, but will not be held to ransom by the Northern Ireland international.

United have been linked with moves for Fulham´s Edwin van der Sar and Middlesbrough´s Mark Schwarzer, who are both out of contract next summer.

" It is one of those situations that is hard to understand," Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News.

" Players get advice from people but whether it is the best advice, I don´t know.

" But the thing is if he walks through that door there are not many Manchester Uniteds waiting, that´s for sure."

Meanwhile, The Red Devils have suffered a blow with the news that Brazilian midfielder Kleberson will be out of action for a month.

The former Atletico Paranaense ace collected an ankle injury in United´s 1-0 Carling Cup win over rivals Arsenal on Wednesday.

While the injury is not as serious as initially feared, after being stretchered off, he will need to rest for between three to four weeks.

Utd and Arsenal chase talents

Arsenal and Manchester United are reportedly ready to continue looking to Italy for burgeoning young talent.

The virtually instant success of Arturo Lupoli and Giuseppe Rossi, who both figured in Wednesday´s Carling Cup tie between the two clubs, has prompted the Premiership sides to maintain contacts with Serie A clubs.

Lupoli and Rossi were stars of Parma´s youth team and Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson moved swiftly to fend off competition for their services.

The latest targets are both keepers with Arsenal keen on Andrea Consigli, who plies his trade for Atlanta´s youth side.

The Italian Under-18 international regular is rumoured to be the subject of a five-year contract offer from Highbury, worth an estimated €150,000 per year.

United, meanwhile, have been impressed with Chievo´s Enrico Alfonso.

The Red Devils are lining up a sizeable offer for the Italy Under-17 goalie, according to sources in Verona.

In both cases, the Italian clubs will do everything in their power to keep the talents in their homeland.

As there are loopholes in the rules regarding youngsters moving across Europe, Atlanta and Chievo must tie the teenagers down to professional contracts to help keep them from the clutches of the Premiership predators.
