FA Youth Cup Final
Middlesbrough 0
United 2

United head back to Old Trafford in ten days time for the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final with a vital 2-0 lead.

Kieran Richardson gave United an invaluable one goal advantage early on, and United fought valiantly for 86 minutes to hold onto that scoreline to head back to Manchester in front. But the scoreline was made much healthier for United right at the death as Ben Collett slammed home United´s second.

Middlesbrough saw much of the early possession, but in the fourth minute, Brian McClair´s side took the lead.

Richardson picked the ball up inside his own half and spotted an opening. The Greenwich-born midfielder showed a turn of pace darting between two Middlesbrough players and then slipped the ball out to Mads Timm on the right wing. Mads gave Kieran the ball back on the edge of the area and he struck a venomous right-footed shot into the bottom corner to give United a dream start.

David Jones went close for United on 17 minutes. The United captain found himself free in the box, but Turnbull in the Boro net saved with his legs.

United were again unlucky not to extend their lead midway in the first half but Eddie Johnson put his shot the wrong side of the post.

Middlesbrough grew in confidence as the half progressed and played some good penetrating football.

And the home side got their first real opportunity on 39 minutes when James Morrison capitalised on a slip by Paul McShane and rounded Luke Steele. It looked a certain goal but Lee Lawrence came from nowhere to clear the ball off the line, and preserve United´s 1-0 lead.

Ben Collett missed a pair of chances close to half time, putting both wide.

Middlesbrough were the dominant team in the second half, and left United camped in their own half for much of the second period.

Middlesbrough wanted a penalty on 71 minutes claiming Lee Lawrence had handled, but the referee waved away the Boro players´ protestations.

Sylvan Blake, on in place of Mads Timm, almost made it two for United with a low shot inside the box, but Turnbull made a superb stop.

Ben Collett dealt the Riverside club a bitter blow right on 90 minutes. Chris Eagles broke down the right wing and found the left-footed midfielder at the far post. Collett, who´d missed two chances at the end of the first half, wasn´t about to let a third chance go begging, and blasted the ball into the far corner.

The win sets United up perfectly for a ninth Youth Cup win.

United: Steele; Sims, Bardsley, McShane, Lawrence; Eagles, Richardson, Jones, Collett; Timm ( Blake), Johnson.

Ferguson relishes crunch game

Ferguson believes Man Utd could have a psychological edge
More Arsenal v Man Utd photos
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes his side have peaked at exactly the right time as they approach the much-anticipated encounter with Arsenal on Wednesday.
Ferguson said his players would go into the Highbury showdown with more confidence than their rivals after overhauling Arsenal at the top of the Premiership in recent weeks.

" This is like the start of a Grand Prix," he said.

" You want to get into pole position with so few games to go. This is the crunch. It is now the biggest game of the season."

And Ferguson added that convincing wins over Newcastle and Liverpool in their last two league matches had only added to the air of confidence among his players.

" The timing of our superb victory at Newcastle on Saturday was perfect. It couldn´t have been better," Ferguson told the Manchester Evening News.

What decides the game is not down to what is said in the newspapers but what´s said on the pitch

Arsenal manager
Arsene Wenger
Feature: Focus on the title run-in

" It is not by accident where the players have got themselves. We have been digging away at Arsenal´s lead for weeks and weeks now. Our form has been building up really nicely."

Arsenal, who have been in indifferent form of late, have seen a recent eight-point lead and a superior goal difference whittled away by United.

And Ferguson hinted that the Gunners´ confidence could have been affected by their rivals´ form.

" There´s not much you can do about it when someone is coming up on you like we have," he said.

" Form is form and it is more difficult to maintain it at the end of the season than it is at the start once you lose it."

Arsenal dismiss Ferguson taunts

However, Wenger refused to become involved in a war of words with Ferguson and insisted he bore no grudge against Manchester United or their manager.

" It doesn´t really take my sleep away," he said.

" It´s not personal at all. I respect all their players as they´re all great players. I have no hate for anybody. These are things that don´t cross my mind before the game.

" I hope that Patrick Vieira will be all right, that we´ll deal well with the first corner or their first break. I don´t think about Sir Alex Ferguson.

" Everyone can have an opinion but the result gives only one winner and let´s make sure that´s us.

" What decides the game is not down to what is said in the newspapers but what´s said on the pitch."

=>Patrick Vieira is expected to be fit to lead Arsenal in their title showdown with Manchester United.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger revealed that Ray Parlour is a slight doubt with a hamstring injury, while Robert Pires is back in the squad after an ankle problem.

Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Gilberto Silva are all poised to return after being rested from the starting line-up against Sheffield United in the FA Cup semi-final.

Arsenal ( from): Seaman, Taylor, Warmuz, Lauren, Cole, Luzhny, Campbell, Keown, Cygan, Stepanovs, Vieira, Gilberto Silva, Edu, Parlour, Wiltord, Ljungberg, Pires, Toure, van Bronckhorst, Henry, Bergkamp, Jeffers, Kanu.

David Beckham ( hamstring) and Fabien Barthez ( toe) will be fit for the game with Arsenal.

However, Old Trafford chief Sir Alex Ferguson does have doubts over Roy Keane ( dead leg), John O´Shea ( knee) and Ryan Giggs ( hamstring), although he expects at least one of that trio to make it.

MOST SIGNIFICANT STATS

This Battle of the Titans is undoubted the " Match of the Season" and potentially the crunch clash for the Championship.

Manchester United, who are chasing a Champions League and League Championship double, took advantage of Arsenal´s Premiership inactivity this weekend by replacing them at the top once again, by virtue of a sensational 2-6 win at Newcastle on Saturday.

The Gunners kept alive dreams of a unique double double of League and FA Cup by booking their place in the FA Cup Final and a match against Southampton at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, 17 May, with a controversial and somewhat unimpressive 1-0 win over Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils are looking to open up a six point lead at the summit with four matches to go. That would put them in the driving seat in pursuit of an eighth title in 11 Premier League seasons and 15th English League crown.

Victory for Arsenal would put them back to the top on goal difference with five matches to play. The North Londoners have a superior goal difference of just one after United´s goal fest at St James´ Park. The defending champions are challenging for a third Premiership trophy in six years and 13th League Championship.

Nine of the ten Premiership titles have been won by one of other these clubs. There has not been a Premier League season yet when at least one has not finished in the top two, and the pair have finished together as winners or runners-up in four of the last five seasons.

While the Red Devils are striving for a sixth successive Premiership win following victories over Leeds ( h), Aston Villa ( a), Fulham ( h), Liverpool ( h), and Newcastle ( a), the Gunners are hunting a sixth consecutive home League win having taken maximum points at Highbury off Chelsea, West Ham, Fulham, Charlton and Everton.

United have built the longest unbeaten run in the top division of 13 games. They have won eleven and drawn twice since suffering their fifth and most recent League defeat and fourth on the road at Middlesbrough on Boxing Day, when they went down 1-3.

Arsenal last failed to take maximum points at home on 29 December, when Liverpool held them to a 1-1 draw. They´ve won nine and drawn six League and Cup games at Highbury since their last home defeat, the 2-3 reverse by Sunderland in the Third Round of the Worthington Cup on 6 November. They also lost their previous home game 1-2 to Blackburn in the Premiership on 26 October.

The reverse fixture at Blackburn on 15 March was the last time Arsenal were beaten. Since then they´ve won three and drawn one League and Cup encounters. The Gunners have scored 100 goals and conceded exactly 50 in their 52 outings in all competitions this season. The blank against Blackburn was only the second time they had failed to score in 71 Premiership games.

This match pits the side with the meanest top flight defence against the one with the most prolific attack. While United have conceded 29 goals in 33 starts, Arsenal have scored 67 in 32 games. United have won more games than any other club in the top League ( 21), while Arsenal have matched their goals total with their points tally.

United hold the edge in the head-to-head count of these League aristocrats. The Old Trafford team have won 68 of their 167 League encounters to Arsenal´s 63. This is the third time these thoroughbreds will have met this season. Honours are even with one 2-0 victory a piece. Juan Sebastian Veron and Paul Scholes were on target in the reverse League fixture in December, while Edu and Sylvain Wiltord were on the mark when the Gunners returned to Old Trafford for the FA Cup Fifth Round clash in February.

Arsenal have won four of their last five, and five of their last seven League and Cup matches with United, and Arsene Wenger leads Sir Alex 6-5 head-to-head in the Premiership.

If Ruud van Nistelrooy scores, he will pass the 36 goal tally he racked up for United last season. Arsenal´s Thierry Henry has scored 27 for his club, 19 in the Premiership. The Frenchman lies in second place, two goals behind Southampton´s James Beattie in the race for the Barclaycard Golden Boot. Van Nistelrooy has scored seven goals in his last four club games, including one at Newcastle on Saturday when Paul Scholes bagged a hat trick.

United are therefore on target to complete a first ´double´ over Arsenal in six years and sixth ´double´ of the season after picking up maximum points home and away against West Brom, Southampton, Birmingham, Liverpool and Newcastle. It would also inflict on Arsenal a second ´double´ reverse after their failure to gather a point in the two fixtures with Blackburn.

Man U´s are about to enter the last week of a make-or-break 19 day programme. After this they receive Blackburn on Saturday 19 April and then face the critical second leg of the Champions League Quarter-final with Real Madrid at Old Trafford on Wednesday, 23 April when they have a 1-3 deficit to recoup. United´s final three Premiership matches are at Tottenham on 27 April, home to Charlton on 3 May and at Everton on 11 May.

Arsenal´s run-in is away to Uefa Cup chasing Middlesbrough next Saturday, away to relegation strugglers Bolton on Saturday week ( 26 April), home to Leeds on 4 May, home to Southampton on 7 May and away to already doomed Sunderland on 11 May.

It´s debatable who has the tougher run-in, by it´s certain whoever comes out on top in this titanic showdown will have the physiological advantage as the finish line approaches.

It has been widely reported today that both Fabien and
Beckham are fit for the match tomorrow. Add that to the news
yesterday that Roy Keane should play, and it means that only
John O’Shea and Ryan Giggs remain as doubts.

" BECKS, BARTHEZ AND KEANE"

Story by Editor 16 April 2003

Early team news.

Roy Keane ( dead leg) looks set to start tonight along with Fabien Barthez ( toe) and DB07 ( hamstring) as they have all been passed fit to play against Arsenal tonight. However John O´Shea ( knee) and Ryan Giggs ( hamstring) will find out later in the day whether they have recovered well enough to be selected.

Arsenal´s only injury worry, Patrick Vieira, looks set to start after overcoming a leg injury that he picked up at the weekend.

You´re a joke Fergie
Arsenal No2 Pat Rice has accused Alex Ferguson of being a laughing stock. Rice lit the fuse for tonight´s title decider at Highbury by claiming Fergie is regarded as a joke by the Gunners. The Manchester United boss accused Arsenal of " triumphalism" for saying they will win the Premiership. But Rice, Arsene Wenger´s right-hand man, rapped: " Alex is always saying anything to try and upset people. He tried it last year with Arsene and got egg on his face. The players just laugh. It doesn´t affect them one iota."
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Fergie doesn´t like me
Arsene Wenger faces his Premiership moment of truth tonight admitting: I don´t know if Alex Ferguson likes me - and I don´t care. Much has been made of the mind games between Arsenal boss Wenger and his Manchester United counterpart. But as the sides prepare to do battle at Highbury, Wenger said: " I don´t think about Alex Ferguson, I don´t lose any sleep over what he says. " I don´t know whether he likes me or not - I don´t know him well enough and those things don´t worry me."
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Bobby relishing battle
Bobby Robson would not miss tonight´s showdown at Highbury for ANYTHING - but even he cannot pick a winner. The Newcastle boss admitted: " This is the head-to-head everyone is talking about, yet I can´t split them. Ask me who will win and it could so easily be any one of three results. But I fancy it could end all square with everything still to play for right up to the final whistle of the season."
Carl Liddle, The Sun

Rubbish to write us off
Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United showed last Saturday why they will not be pushed aside in the Premiership title race. Now the Reds aim to hammer home the point in the crunch showdown against the Gunners at Highbury tonight. United are three points clear, have closed the goal difference by virtue of that thumping 6-2 victory at Newcastle and, though Arsenal have a game in hand, United are very much the side in the groove. England defender Ferdinand insists United proved what they were all about by picking themselves off the floor after the crushing disappointment of the 3-1 defeat at Real Madrid in the first leg of the European Cup quarter-final.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Tonight´s key clashes
SEAMAN v BARTHEZ
The Gunners keeper proved what an able Seaman he still is with one of the greatest saves ever in the FA Cup semi-final against Sheffield United. Fabien Barthez has been consistent but there are question marks over his dealings in the air and with high long-range shots. He had a nightmare last time out at Highbury. One mistake from either tonight and they will never live it down.
VIEIRA v KEANE
Hold on to your hats and get ready for a midfield clash that will rock the Richter scale. United boss Alex Ferguson will take the shackles off Keane and allow him to take on battles around the pitch. Vieira should shake off a knee injury. Who wins the battle between these two will go a long way to deciding which side wins.
HENRY v VAN NISTELROOY
Ruud is the man in form. With 36 goals to Henry´s 27 this season, the Dutchman is flying. He proved he can challenge the best in Madrid and followed that up with another selfless display against Newcastle. But Henry´s pace is something van Nistelrooy cannot match. And if he gets into top gear, United´s defence is in for one tough night.
Sports staff, The Sun

Cocky Alex gagging for it
Alex Ferguson goes into tonight´s title tussle with Arsenal insisting the time for talk is over. The Manchester United chief verbally chipped away at the Gunners while his team was gnawing at their eight-point lead. Now he claims the mind games have paid off. Fergie accused Arsenal of arrogance as they raced clear in the Premiership. And his stinging words have come back to haunt the Highbury men.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Gunners or goners
Anything less than an Arsenal win at Highbury tonight and the title is back at Old Trafford. Even a draw will be enough to start celebrations among the Manchester United rank and file not seen since the smash-and-grab European Cup final victory in Barcelona. What hurt United fans most about the surrender of the championship to Arsenal in 1998 and 2002 was that the Gunners dealt the mortal blows with late-season victories at Old Trafford. So for United to decide this season´s title race at Highbury will mean almost as much to their supporters as the ending of the 26-year championship drought in 1992-93.
Steven Howard, The Sun

Ref is the Maine man
Manchester United´s hopes of victory at Highbury lie in the hands of a referee regarded as a cult hero by rivals City. Mark Halsey even had to cancel a visit to a Manchester City supporters´ club meeting to take charge at Arsenal. The Hertfordshire official is a big hit with Maine Road fans for allowing crucial added time in the Division Two play-off final with Gillingham in 1999. Paul Dickov equalised for City in the 95th minute and they went on to win on penalties. City fans have never forgotten and Halsey had been due to speak at the Whitefield and Prestwich Blues supporters´ club last night.
Sports staff, The Sun

Fergie claims victory ahead of crunch clash
Sir Alex Ferguson reckons he has won his mind-games battle with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger ahead of tonight´s Premiership showdown. Fergie has accused Wenger and his players of " arrogance and triumphalism" for their insistence throughout the season that the title was already theirs for the second successive year. Now the Manchester United boss boasted his side now occupy pole position in the title race and are ready to clinch their eighth Premiership crown. And Fergie could not resist one last dig at Wenger when he said: " As far as we´re concerned, all the talking has been done."
David McDonnell and Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Nis is your life, Ruud
The battle of minds has been between the managers. But it is the battle of wills on the Highbury pitch that will be decisive tonight. Sir Alex Ferguson´s belief that his men have the momentum to bring them glory is understandable, and witnessing the destruction United wrought on Liverpool and Newcastle they appear to be playing as an unstoppable force. And in Ruud van Nistelrooy, United have the most in-form player in the Premiership, and he will be hoping to have the game of his life to put the Gunners to the sword.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Culture clash
All talk of a growing personal feud with Sir Alex Ferguson was laughingly dismissed by Arsene Wenger yesterday. Ferguson has worked himself into a frenzy of scorn about the pronouncements of the Arsenal manager in recent weeks. Arrogance, boastfulness, foolishness: Ferguson has laid it all at Wenger´s door in the build-up to tonight´s crunch Premiership clash at Highbury. But on the eve of the battle, Wenger insisted he did not even dislike his great rival from Old Trafford. " I don´t hate anyone," he said, smiling.
Oliver Holt, Daily Mirror

Now Fergie is feeling smiles better
It is hard to imagine Arsene Wenger bounding around Arsenal´s training ground, laughing and singing at the top of his voice. But that was the scene at Manchester United´s Carrington headquarters yesterday, as Sir Alex Ferguson finalised his preparations for their Premiership showdown at Highbury this evening. If Fergie was feeling the pressure ahead of what has been billed the title decider, he certainly was not showing it as he admitted this season´s championship race had given him a new lease of life. Fergie´s upbeat mood was in stark contrast to exactly a year earlier, when he lost his cool and cut short a Press conference just 24 hours before Arsenal clinched the title with victory at Old Trafford. But he clearly feels United are now in firm control of the title race, and even found time to joke about Eric Cantona´s claim that his former boss is so dedicated to his job he will die in the dug-out. " I´m not happy with Eric," joked Fergie. " Dying in the dug-out? I hope he means when I´m 92 and sat down! I might have to get him on the phone and have a word with him. Seriously though, I´m really enjoying this season and I seem to have a new lease of life."

" Seba back for Madrid clash? "

Juan Sebastian Veron is expected back in training later this week when he returns from seeing a specialist in Italy over his troublesome knee injury.

Veron hasn´t played since being substituted against Leeds at Old Trafford six weeks ago, and travelled to see the " guru" at Lazio in attempt to speed up his return to action.

" He´s got this guru out there who he believes in," Ferguson said. " He has had him at Sampdoria, Parma and Lazio and we get that quite a bit. The French players also have someone they turn to. They have a faith in these sort of people."

It is hoped that Veron will return for next weeks´ Real Madrid second leg Champions League quarter final, but it´s nip and tuck whether the Argentine will line-up at Old Trafford.
