Looking to the future
Now, there’s a good crop coming through. David Jones the captain is a useful player, and Chris Eagles gives the team balance on the right wing. Mads Timm has been in good form recently as well, but there was good movement and good football played all over the park against Charlton. Kieran Richardson got a goal at the end, but the team looked good as a unit.
All the players have a heck of a chance of making it, if not at United, then for another club, because they have had a superb grounding here. It’s amazing how they come through. One of the best examples is John O’Shea, who looked steady in the junior teams and the reserves, but when he got the taste of first team football he really blossomed. He’s an example to all the young players coming through of what they can achieve.
Players do that, and I believe there are some players in the youth team at the moment who are capable of making that step up. It could be a healthy period for United in terms of bringing young players on because, when you win the competition, you normally find that a group of five or six go all the way. The most recent example of that came when United won the FA Youth Cup in 1992, the side had the likes of Giggs, Beckham, Gary Neville, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.
