Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to four-goal Ruud van Nistelrooy and opponents Sparta Prague for their part in an entertaining night at Old Trafford.

United needed a win to keep their UEFA Champions League campaign on track and van Nistelrooy returned from domestic suspension to net all his side´s goals in a 4-1 success.

Ferguson had hoped that the opportunities would fall to last season´s leading scorer for The Red Devils.

" Most of them [fell to Ruud]," he told Sky Sports News. " We did have other chances, particularly in the first half.

" It was a game in which there was great quality in terms of attacking play, particularly from us in the first half.

" For a lot of the game, Sparta played very well but scoring the first goal at home is a big advantage. We´re very difficult to beat then.

" Several of our players were very good in the first half.

" Ruud´s third was important because they started the second half very well and played some excellent football. Just when they thought they had a chance, Ruud killed them off.

" We´ve always done well with midfield players scoring at the club, we´ve had great contributions but it´s not happening at the moment. But it will.

" For any footballer, the big challenge is always the biggest stage and it´s a true test of all footballers in Europe.

" We have to win [against Lyon] because Fenerbahce, if they beat Sparta, then they are going to need a result. If we win the game against Lyon, we´re safe."

Brown seals United deal

Wes Brown has finally agreed a new contract with Manchester United, and is now tied to the club until the summer of 2008.

The defender risked the wrath of manager Sir Alex Ferguson by rejecting the club´s initial offer, but it appears that a compromise has been reached.

With his previous contract ending in the summer, Brown´s future at Old Trafford looked anything but certain when Ferguson suggested that talks would not be resumed over a new deal.

Ferguson was unhappy with Brown´s agents for their demands but, after talking to the defender, decided to allow new discussions.

Brown featured in United´s impressive 4-1 win against Sparta Prague on Wednesday, and is keen to get his career back on track.

The combative defender was forcing his way into international contention with England when a serious knee injury kept him out of the game for several months.

His return has been patchy, but despite interest from Blackburn, Brown will now battle to become a regular starter for The Red Devils.

Ferguson was delighted that Brown had pledged his future to the club.

" We are all delighted by the news. Over the last few weeks there has been a great deal of uncertainty and that has been a worry.
" I have known Wes since he was 13 years old and have watched and seen him grow into a splendid young man.

" I couldn´t bare to lose him, I didn´t want to lose him. I am thrilled that Wes has decided to commit his future here and I hope that he will enjoy his career at Manchester United."

Manchester UnitedMalcolm Glazer has made a revised offer to buy John Magnier and J P McManus´ 28.9 percent stake in Manchester United.

Talks between the American tycoon and The Red Devils´ board were terminated at the end of last month.

Glazer is believed to have offered the Irish pair £3.10 a share for their stake, in a deal worth around £270 million.

However, that deal was conditional that Glazer gain control of 75 percent of United´s shares.

As yet Cubic, John Magnier and J P McManus´ investment company in United, have not accepted or rejected the latest offer.

Glazer currently owns a 28.1 percent stake in United and would be obliged to make a formal takeover bid should his stake reach 30 percent.

Blues told to up Joaquin offer

La Liga outfit Real Betis have informed Chelsea that an improved offer for Spain international winger Joaquin would be enough to secure his services.

The Blues were close to sealing a deal for the in-demand Betis ace last season, however Claudio Ranieri´s exit as manager put an end to the negotiations.

Now Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera has stated that Jose Mourinho has taken a fancy to the 23-year-old and that talks could be resumed.

Spanish giants Real Madrid have consistently been linked with a move for the star, however Betis do not believe Real can compete with Chelsea financially.

" Chelsea made me a very big offer, I said no and when they said they wanted to keep on negotiating they changed their coach and it stopped," explained Ruiz de Lopera.

" But now it seems their new coach ( Jose Mourinho) also likes him and we have had a few proposals over lunch. If they raise their offer, one day we are going to say yes.

" I have the feeling that if Joaquin does end up at another club, it might not be Real Madrid, because we have had some offers that maybe Real Madrid can´t match."

United offer Carroll new deal

Manchester United Roy Carroll is stalling over an offer of a new deal at Old Trafford.

The Northern Ireland international is coming to the end of his current contract and as yet he is still to agree an extension.

Carroll is currently first choice at United after displacing Tim Howard in September and his performances are believed to have attracted the interest of other clubs.

Carroll is thought to be keeping his options open and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has warned him he has a decision to make.

" He has had an offer and it is up to him now. He is just the same as the rest of them, " said Ferguson.

Meanwhile, United captain Roy Keane has been inducted into the National Football Museum´s Hall of Fame.

Keane joins the likes of Alan Shearer, Wilf Mannion, Billy Bremner, Geoff Hurst, Viv Anderson, Tony Adams and Sue Lopez to be honoured.
