Brown set for fresh talks

Manchester United and Wes Brown are ready to return to the negotiating table regarding a new contract for the defender.

Brown´s present deal expires at the end of the season and the 25-year-old rejected United´s initial offer to stay at Old Trafford.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson hinted the problem lies with the stopper´s agent and suggested there would be no further talks to keep Brown at the club.

A string of fellow Premiership clubs have been linked with the England international but reports suggest fresh contract discussions are now due to take place.

The move to resume talks comes after a meeting between Ferguson and Brown where the manager reassured the defender he will not be a peripheral figure in his plans.

Brown was captain of United for Tuesday´s Carling Cup tie at Crewe Alexandra and admits the 3-0 victory at Gresty Road displayed the depth of Ferguson´s squad.

He also brushed off the fall-out from United´s Premiership triumph over champions Arsenal last weekend, saying the matter has been forgotten at Old Trafford.

" We know what it is being said about the Arsenal game but we don´t want to get into that side of it," said Brown.

" The fact is we won 2-0, pulled three points back on them and we´re happy with that. All we are concentrating on now is Saturday´s game at Portsmouth.

" We are getting a bit of form back now and by winning so convincingly against Crewe in the League Cup, with a completely different side to the one that started against Arsenal, the manager knows he has a great squad to pick from."

Meanwhile, Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein met up with United´s chief executive David Gill on Wednesday in an attempt to reach a truce between the clubs.

Dein moved to smooth things over with The Red Devils following the scenes on and off the pitch at Sunday´s stormy encounter.

Football is a man´s game. It´s a physical-contact game. If Wenger can´t stomach a bit of rough and tumble he should quit his job and go and manage a ladies´ bowls team.

>> Facile mais ça fait toujours rire ; )

United have done more down the years to promote the image of English football around the world than any ten other Premiership clubs put together.

>> Ca résume tout

Cole threatens to sue Ruud

The agent of Ashley Cole, Jonathan Barnett, has confirmed he has sought legal advice over the prospect of suing Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutch hit-man was handed a three-game ban for the tackle that went unpunished in Sunday´s game between the two sides at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy´s tackle was late and reckless but it was thought that The FA´s intervention would put an end to the matter.

However, Barnett has now confirmed that legal advice has been sought but, that in all likelihood, no action would be taken.

´´It´s only because Ashley is the nicest guy in football, a real gentleman, that he probably wouldn´t want to pursue anything through the courts,´´ confirmed Barnett.

´´But then again, I am his agent.

´´We are looking at potential legal action, even criminal action for assault, but I cannot see Ashley wanting to go ahead.´´

PIQUE JOY AT UNITED CHANCE

Gerard Pique admits he would not have earned a first team opportunity at Barcelona as quickly as he has at Manchester United.

The Spanish teenager joined The Red Devils from Barcelona during the summer and has made a huge impression on manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

His rapid progression through the Old Trafford ranks was capped when he made his debut against Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday evening.

Pique came on as a substitute for the final half-hour as United beat their Championship opponents 3-0 in the Carling Cup.

But, if he had remained at Camp Nou, Pique feels he would be nowhere near to breaking in to Frank Rijkaard´s first team.

Instead, the 17-year-old feels his appearance against Crewe is a vindication for his decision to swap Barcelona for Manchester in the summer.

" I don´t think I would have had this opportunity at Barcelona," Pique told AS.

" At 17, I would be playing for Barca C. No-one would have given me the opportunity to play in the professional team.

" Every time I am more convinced ( that I made the right decision)."

Arsenal In Utd Peace Talks
David Dein has met David Gill in an attempt to defuse the simmering row between Arsenal and Manchester United. Gunners vice-chairman Dein had talks with the Old Trafford chief executive in Manchester over the fall-out from Sunday’s controversial clash. Dein has been shocked by some of the allegations made in the wake of United’s 2-0 triumph, especially those concerning Alex Ferguson being pelted with pizza and soup. He said: “I met David Gill on Tuesday for talks. But I talk to him all the time anyway, as the clubs have a good relationship.”
Pat Sheehan, The Sun

You’re Just Being Silly, Says Gunners Chief
Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood is determined to do his bit to end the bitter feud between the two biggest clubs in the land. Hill-Wood, like all neutrals, is horrified the simmering rivalry between his club and Manchester United has blown sky-high again. And following in the wake of vice-chairman David Dein’s peace initiative yesterday, Hill-Wood is encouraging managers Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson to do their bit. He said: " They are two different characters and they simply have to show that this fixture can produce good football rather than anything else."
Brian Woolnough, Daily Star

Crerand: Van´s No Villain
Ruud van Nistelrooy will never be anything but a hero to the Manchester United faithful. A record of 115 goals in 154 games tells you why. United legend Paddy Crerand knows what makes an Old Trafford great and he believes van Nistelrooy is just that. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger slammed the Dutch striker for his knee-high tackle on Gunners left-back Ashley Cole in Sunday’s Battle of the Buffet. Van Nistelrooy was handed a three-game ban by the FA as punishment. But Crerand, a European Cup winner with United in 1968, is furious about the way van Nistelrooy has been portrayed following the incident. He rapped: " The challenge on Cole was high. He’s been punished and that’s that. To brand him as dirty is well wide of the mark."

Saha Eyes New Title Run
Manchester United are back on the march. Victory over Arsenal, followed by a thumping League Cup victory from their second string at Crewe, has left confidence fully restored. Now the club are determined to keep their foot firmly on the pedal, with the Gunners still rocking from a sorry Sunday at Old Trafford. Louis Saha is set for more first-team football while Ruud van Nistelrooy is banned for the next two games. And the Frenchman is convinced Arsenal’s eight-point lead over United can be reeled in AND Alex Ferguson’s men can reclaim the Premiership crown. Striker Saha said: “Arsenal have been on a fantastic run. But I think United can win the league, I really do. I hope we can go on a good run and keep growing in confidence."
Neil Custis, The Sun

Wes So Angry
Wes Brown insists the only thing on the menu at Old Trafford is getting back into the title race. Despite the ‘Pizzagate’ scandal, complaints about the referee and the behaviour of certain United players after the Arsenal match, the defender is adamant the 2-0 win was the only important thing. " We know what is being said about the Arsenal game but we don’t want to get into that side of it,” said United star Brown. “The fact is we won 2-0, pulled three points back on them and we’re happy with that. All we are concentrating on now is Saturday’s game at Portsmouth. We’re getting back a bit of form now."
Neil Martin, Daily Star

Howard Vows To Be No.1 Again
Tim Howard has warned Roy Carroll he will never accept being Manchester United’s No.2 goalkeeper. The American international wants his first-team place back after an impressive display for United’s shadow squad in the Carling Cup win at Crewe. “It’s been frustrating recently,” he said. “I’m a competitor and I don’t think there’s any player that sits in the stands and enjoys it. I’m looking forward to getting back into the fold whenever that may be. There is only one keeper that can play. You have to look at it along those lines. I will never consider myself as a No.2.”
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Luke’s Nuked - Boro 3 Coventry 0
Coventry Goalkeeper Luke Steele gifted holders Boro an easy run to the last 16. Steele, 20, parried Stewart Downing’s fourth-minute shot – but got into a comical muddle with Dean Leacock before Szliard Nemeth pounced. And the on-loan Manchester United keeper got nowhere near Downing’s deep cross as 18-year-old James Morrison headed No.2 on 25 minutes.

Reserves: Reds Battle Back Against Blackburn

FA Premier Reserve League North
Blackburn Rovers Reserves 2
Manchester United Reserves 2
Christie Park, Morecambe

Ricky Sbragia´s Reserves twice came from behind to claim a point against Blackburn´s second string at Christie Park, and were unlucky not to nab the victory.

The hosts went ahead through Paul Gallagher´s tap-in on 16 minutes, but David Poole levelled matters just before the half-hour mark, firing in off the post after intercepting a poor pass.

Parity was short-lived, however, as Jermal Johnson restored Blackburn´s lead minutes later with a calm finish after decent interplay in the Rovers midfield.

Once again Poole came to the Reds´ rescue, converting Sylvan Ebanks-Blake´s knock-down five minutes later.

United left Morecambe with a well-earned point for their resolve, and could even have won had Rovers keeper David Yelldell not denied Colin Heath with a fine save.

United side: Heaton; Picken; Lawrence; Pique; Spector; N´Galula; Eagles; D Jones; Ebanks-Blake; Poole; Heath.

Attendance: 1,131.

Debutant Blake Eyes Further Chances

Teenage striker Sylvan Blake was given a taste of first-team football against Crewe in the Carling Cup, and hopes it is the first of many appearances for the club.

The 18-year-old forward from Cambridge came on as a substitute in the final ten minutes of the 3-0 win over Dario Gradi’s side at Gresty Road.

" It was a great moment for me," Blake told MUTV. " The team worked hard and played well so it was fairly simple for me to settle in when I came on.

" You always want to be involved and want to get on, so it was a proud moment for me when I came off the bench.

" The team had a good 3-0 lead and were dominating possession, so it was a good time for the young players like myself, Gerard Pique and Chris Eagles to get a run-out with the first team."

" You always want to be involved and want to get on. It was a proud moment for me when I came off the bench."
Sylvan Blake

The League Cup has proved a vital platform for the development of young future talent at the club. And Blake is hoping for more chances in the competition as the Reds progress.

" The Carling Cup has always been a great competition for the young players to get their chance," said Blake.

" As long as you show the manager what you can do in training you are always going to get your chance.

" It’s our objective to get as many games as possible with the first team. If the team can keep playing well then hopefully we will go further in this competition.”

Ils ont joué en Carling Cup et l´un des deux devrait être titulaire ce w-e, l´autre sur le banc.

Howard a fait son retour, Keano et Quinton devraient être prêts pour ce w-e, donc seul Ruud manquera à l´appel ^^
