Fergie kicks Arsene
Sir Alex Ferguson has launched his most brutal attack ever on Arsene Wenger. United boss Ferguson branded Arsenal a " disgrace" and claimed Wenger´s men " got away with murder" after last season´s infamous Battle of Old Trafford. Ferguson raged: " Arsenal got away with murder last season. They got away scot-free, really, because the sentence they got for the lack of discipline they showed against us at Old Trafford was ridiculous. What the Arsenal players did that day was the worst thing I have ever seen in sport."
Simon Mullock, Sunday Mirror

We’re coming for Roo
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Arsenal: “Wayne Rooney’s season starts a week today – and so does ours.” The Manchester United manager believes Rooney will be fully match fit to coincide with the arrival at Old Trafford of the champions. He said: “You like to give a player six pre-season games and Wayne didn’t have that. So if we play him on Tuesday, that’s his six games, including two for England – before we play Arsenal. That might be the start of our season.”
Paul Hetherington, Daily Star Sunday

Bucks stopped here
American billionaire Malcolm Glazer is not the only one who is suddenly finding out that money cannot buy you everything. Sir Alex Ferguson learned the same harsh lesson at St Andrews where his £80million strikeforce could not buy a single goal. Superstars Ruud van Nistelrooy, Louis Saha, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alan Smith all started and all fired blanks. Then superheroes Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes came off the bench but failed to muster a meaningful effort between them even though United were desperate not to surrender any more precious points.

United’s red men walking
No wonder Steve Bruce wore the sort of look you would probably find on a man who has just found out his teenage daughter is being wooed by a Premiership tearaway. Never will he have a better chance to put one over on his mentor. And if he had been sunk during a generous helping of Fergie-time - as he so nearly was by Alan Smith´s volley - then the Birmingham manager would truly have known what a mugging feels like. This is the lowest number of points Sir Alex Ferguson´s team has ever had in the Premiership at this stage of the season. And they are lucky to have them.

It’s down to Rio
Sven Goran Eriksson believes the return of Rio Ferdinand has revolutionised the way England play and will have a profound effect on the way the national team play in the future. The coach said: " In my mind Rio has been incredible since his return to the game. In many ways his performances have been impeccable. In the last two matches Rio has stepped forward and changed the way we can deliver the ball from defence. It helps the midfield players get into attacking positions and has allowed me to adopt a different way of playing, the way I like teams to play with three strikers."
Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

Cruyff hails ace Rooney
Johan Cruyff believes Wayne Rooney has all the qualities to become one of the best players the game has seen in years. The Dutch master said: " I can´t remember a player catching my eye like Rooney has. It has to be 23 years ago when a young Marco van Basten made his debut for Ajax. There are striking similarities between the two in terms of natural talent and I have no doubt Rooney has all the qualities to become one of the best strikers in many years. I was in the TV studios analysing the Champions League games the other week when he made his United debut. Rarely have I got so excited about a player´s debut for a club.”
Paul Smith, Sunday Mirror

Rio: I’ll repay Sven
Sven Goran Eriksson has told Rio Ferdinand that he is the best centre-half he has EVER seen and that he can change the face of English football. And the England centre-half has responded by vowing to spend the rest of his career repaying the loyalty the Swede showed him during his eight-month drugs test ban. Ferdinand said: " For your managers to be showing that sort of confidence in putting you straight back into two great teams breeds confidence in yourself. Hopefully I will be able to keep repaying those two managers who have done that for me - Sir Alex Ferguson and Sven Goran Eriksson. In terms of having someone who shows loyalty towards me, Mr Eriksson has been great.”
Andy Dunn, The People

FA will probe Roo deal
Wayne Rooney’s dad took a £50,000 sweetener from a football agent, the News of the World can exclusively reveal. The FA confirmed last night that they will investigate two payments of £25,000 made to the Rooney family when the Manchester United wonderkid was just 15 years old. An FA spokesman said: “We are looking into this matter.”

Glazer in £7bn gamble
American tycoon Malcolm Glazer could hit the jackpot in the £7billion online gambling business if he buys Manchester United. The new Gambling Bill, to be presented to Parliament within two weeks, will open up the world of online gambling by allowing operators to run their businesses from the UK. Glazer believes the website will be a golden nugget.

United eye Casillas
Manchester United are trying to lure Spanish international keeper Iker Casillas away from Real Madrid so that they can sign him on a free when his contract ends in 2006. United are believed to be prepared to offer the 23-year-old a ‘galactico’ salary of £4million a year in order to bring him to Old Trafford – more than double what he earns at present with Real.
Bill Mills, Sunday Mirror

No op for Scholes
Paul Scholes has been assured that he does not need an operation to cure his latest groin problem. Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Paul has trained well all week and although he suffered another niggle on Thursday, we have been assured it’s only a little setback.”

Sparky plan is to go Wes
Manchester United are desperately trying to keep Wes Brown – with Blackburn boss Mark Hughes ready to make a bold move. United chiefs want to thrash out a new deal with Brown, but Hughes is ready to snap up the 25-year-old defender with an offer of around £2million.

United target Cameroon keeper
Manchester United are taking a close interest in Cameroon’s Spain-based international goalkeeper Idriss Kameni. Old Trafford goalkeeping coach Tony Coton has been to watch the 20-year-old in action for La Liga side Espanyol – and the reports about the African star have been positive.

Glazer ups United shares
Dutchman John De Mol – the man behind TV’s Big Brother – could be the next target for Malcolm Glazer in his bid for control of Manchester United. De Mol has four per cent of United’s shareholding and can expect an approach from the American sports tycoon.

Gazza is Mad about it
Paul Gascoigne has finally admitted: “I must have been mad not to have joined Manchester United.” Gazza was all set to become a United superstar in 1988 but at the eleventh hour he got cold feet and decided instead to join Tottenham. He admitted: “I had the chance to play alongside Bryan Robson at United, and probably made a mad decision when I was young.”

Man Utd boss on Arsenal: That mob got away with murder!

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has kicked off the war of words with Arsenal before next week´s title cruncher.

Get your Free Screensavers now!
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has just described United as a fading force in English football and Robert Pires appeared to suggest the fighting spirit engendered among Arsenal players by ganging up on Ruud Van Nistelrooy last September acted as a spur for the rest of their season.

" Arsenal got off scot-free really, they got away with murder," said Ferguson of the FA´s decision to ban Lauren for four games, Keown for three, and Vieira and Ray Parlour for one each.

" The disciplinary treatment was ridiculous when you think that Eric Cantona got nine months for attacking a supporter. All right, that was a serious offence and no one would disagree that something had to be done, but United took their own action in suspending him for four months. I don´t think Arsenal would suspend one of their own players for four months no matter what he had done.

" The FA said what Eric did set a terrible example to young people. Given that he did it in a night match that wasn´t on television, while United v Arsenal kicked off at lunchtime with probably about 10 million kids watching live on TV, I wonder what was really the worst example. What Arsenal players did that day was the worst thing I´ve seen in this sport. No wonder they were so delighted at the verdicts.

" They conveniently forget things, that mob. They seemed to think Patrick Vieira was badly done-by, yet he´s the captain of Arsenal and he´s jeopardised his team by trying to kick Ruud van Nistelrooy. OK he missed, but he still tried. There was no criticism of that, even though he was the one sent off."

Quieroz praises Ferdinand
RIO Ferdinand has been hailed as the best central defender in the world by Manchester United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz.

Ferdinand has stunned seasoned observers by the ease with which he has returned to senior action for club and country after his eight-month ban.

United have felt the benefit with two clean sheets in their first three outings since Ferdinand ended his suspension, while England gained maximum points from their two World Cup qualifiers without conceding a goal after the Londoner was restored to Sven-Goran Eriksson´s line-up alongside Sol Campbell.

Ferdinand was even made United captain against Fenerbahce in the absence of Roy Keane even though Red Devils´ stalwarts Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs were in the side that destroyed the Turks.

The 25-year-old´s form is in marked contrast to the stuttering displays he produced two years ago after becoming the world´s most expensive defender when he completed his £29million move to Old Trafford from Leeds.

Then, as Queiroz freely admits, Ferdinand looked nothing like the composed figure he is today. And the wily coach, now back with the Red Devils after a personally frustrating and unsuccessful 12 months at Real Madrid, has outlined the significant changes that have taken place.

" People often forget that Rio picked up a couple of injuries during his first few months at the club, including one against Boca Juniors before the season had even started," he said.

" That meant his fitness wasn´t as good as it could have been, which in turn affected his confidence.

" But even towards the end of that season, his performance levels started to grow and he looked more like the player we knew him to be.

" Now I would say without hesitation he is the best player in his position in the world and will be one of the rocks upon which the next Manchester United team is built."

During that first difficult season, Ferdinand revealed the struggles he had adapting to life with one of the world´s biggest clubs.

A star at West Ham and Leeds, the stylish Peckham-born defender found the demands of Old Trafford a totally different proposition and seemed to get weighed down by the heavy expectation placed upon his shoulders.

Queiroz believes the problem was simple. Ferdinand found himself unable to escape the burden of his huge price tag and as a consequence thought about his situation and the wisdom of his move far too much.

" It didn´t matter what the context was, whenever anyone mentioned Rio, the amount of money his transfer cost was always brought into it," said Queiroz.

" Even if he went on holiday it was, `the £30million player did this´. That doesn´t happen so much on the continent, but because of it, I think Rio felt an extra degree of responsibility.

" Sometimes we can all think about things too much. When you make any important decision, you have to accept it could be the right one or the wrong one, but what you must not do is spend time worrying about which it is. Once you have made a decision, there is no point dwelling on it. It´s just wasted energy.

" Things are totally different for him now. He has been here two years and though he has been out of the game for eight months, he doesn´t have any doubts about himself.

" And just as importantly, neither does he have to win the hearts of the United fans. That job is done."

Ferdinand will look to maintain his impressive form on Tuesday, when Sir Alex Ferguson takes his side to Prague looking to consolidate their position at the top of Champions League Group D by claiming victory over currently pointless Sparta.

Not that their position at the bottom of the table should lure United into a false sense of security as they have already established a clear lead at the head of the Czech table, collecting 20 points from their opening eight games.

And, in United old boy Karel Poborsky, they have a supreme dangerman, even if he never produced his best form during an ill-fated two seasons at Old Trafford.

Man Utd sound out Real Madrid No1 Casillas

Manchester United are chasing Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Get your Free Screensavers now!
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has sounded out Casillas´ agent, Gines Carvajal, about the young keeper´s plans for his future and has been encouraged by the feedback received.

Casillas´ contract at Real expires in 2006 and Ferguson has informed Carvajal they´re happy to wait until then to sign the Spanish international on a Bosman.

United are prepared to sign Casillas to a £4 million-a-year contract, well out of the league for Real which only reserves that sort of salary to its galacticos.

United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz has played a major role in Ferguson´s move for Casillas, having worked with the Spaniard at Real Madrid last season.
