Scholes Set For Surprise Return

Paul Scholes could make a surprise return to the United starting line-up for tomorrow´s Premiership clash with Birmingham City.

The United midfielder has been out of action with a groin injury since the 2-1 win over Liverpool at the end of last month.

But at his Friday press briefing, Sir Alex Ferguson told reporters Scholes is in with a chance of playing at St. Andrews.

The United boss also revealed that Ruud van Nistelrooy, Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha, who played for the Reserves earlier this week, are all in contention for a starting place against Steve Bruce´s side

Fergie´s United are history
Arsene Wenger has sensationally written off Manchester United - as fading giants. The Arsenal manager dismisses the Old Trafford team as over the hill. And Wenger claims United boss Alex Ferguson is struggling to turn things around — despite spending a fortune on players such as £30million striker Wayne Rooney. Wenger, in a French TV interview, said: " The golden years at United were 1999, 2000 and 2001. What made that team strong began to disappear because the players had reached their peak. They are rebuilding. But the question is, ‘Are they going to be as good as the previous generation.´ And I am not so convinced by that.”
Andrew Dillon, The Sun

Fergie lays down law to defence
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester United he will not tolerate any more defensive slips. " We need that back four performing all the time now," he said. " We can´t be leaking goals and giving teams an easyv ride. That will be the foundation for us to win matches."
Michael Jones, Daily Express

Glazer bid in tatters
Malcolm Glazer´s attempted takeover of Manchester United looked to be on the verge of collapse last night. Talks between the American and United’s majority shareholders J P McManus and John Magnier are understood to have finished without an agreement. Glazer owns 19 per cent of United and wanted to buy the Irish pair’s 29 per cent and launch a full takeover.
Neil Custis, The Sun

Fans joy as United deal falls flat
Jubliant Manchester United fans were celebrating last night after Malcolm Glazer´s £800million attempted takeover of the club collapsed. Glazer´s bitterly-opposed bid ended when he failed to persuade United´s major shareholders, John Magnier and JP McManus, to sell him their 29 per cent stake in the club. United fans successfully thwarted Rupert Murdoch´s attempt to buy the club in 1998, but Oliver Houston, spokesman for Shareholders United, warned: " This has served as a wake-up call but we may be third time unlucky.

Bruce out to end the Reds jinx with Blues
Steve Bruce is desperate to break his Manchester United hoodoo tomorrow after Birmingham´s disastrous start to the season. The City boss has warned his men they must improve or face being sucked into a bottom-of-the-table scrap early in the campaign. He said: " We all know by know there are no easy games in the Premiership. It´s a very tough league and probably the most competitive in the world. If you have a run of a few games without a win you can get pulled down into it, whoever you are. But we are starting to put a little run together now and the lads are starting to gel."
Martin Rogers, Daily Mirror

Neville: Nothing can stop us now
Gary Neville believes only a total disaster can now stop England qualifying for the World Cup in 2006. Wednesday’s impressive 1-0 win in freezing Azerbaijan leaves Sven Goran Eriksson’s team with 10 points from their opening four games and in control of their group. The Manchester United defender said: “We’re pleased with the way the campaign is going at the moment. We’ve played three of our toughest away fixtures and come through them unbeaten. Now we’ve four home games against Northern Ireland, Azerbaijan, Austria and Poland. We’re looking to win all four and that would put us in such a strong position."
Mark Irwin, The Sun

Rooney wants to be a roamer
Wayne Rooney has given Sven Goran Eriksson a big selection dilemma following his World Cup performances this week. The teenager has told the England coach he is happier playing as the deep-lying playmaker in the three-striker system used in the wins against Wales and Azerbaijan. The England boss said: " Wayne likes to play there. He told me that twice. Of course he has the ball a lot in that position, more than if he plays up front. I think he´s doing very well and he wants to persevere with it."
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Smith snubbed by Leeds
Leeds fans have carried out their threat to withhold Alan Smith’s Player of the Year award. Members of the official Supporters Club voted for Smith before he joined Manchester United in May, then branded him a traitor. Fans chairman Ray Fell said: “Alan is a deserved winner but we couldn’t bring him back for the presentation. It would’ve been embarrassing for him and us.”

Reds: No " Definitive Proposal" As Yet

The Board of Manchester United PLC ( the “Company”) notes the recent press speculation.

Further to the Board’s announcement made on 4 October 2004 in respect of a possible offer for the Company, the Board can confirm that it has held preliminary discussions with the Glazer Family Limited Partnership ( “Glazer Family”) and its advisers about a possible offer.

There is currently no definitive proposal for the Board to consider. The Board also understands that the Glazer Family and its advisers held discussions with Cubic Expression but that no talks are currently ongoing.

The Board understands that the Glazer Family continues to consider all its options in relation to its shareholding in Manchester United, including the possibility of making an offer.

The Board can assure shareholders in the Company and fans of the club that, should any proposal be made in the future, the Board will take into account all relevant considerations including the potential financial terms, possible financial structure and any impact these considerations may have on the future operation of the football club.

A further announcement will be made if appropriate.

Wenger: United in transition

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels Manchester United are a shadow of the side which dominated the domestic scene at the turn of the millennium, but is not prepared to write them off as title contenders.

The Red Devils secured the Premiership title in 1999, 2000 and 2001, but they have fallen behind Arsenal in the domestic pecking order in recent seasons.

The Frenchman feels United are in a period of transition and will have to build again if they are to restore the glory years to Old Trafford.

Wenger and his Old Trafford counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson have been verbal sparring partners for some time and the Gallic tactician has opted to weigh in with his opinion on The Red Devils on French television.

" The golden years at United were 1999, 2000 and 2001," Wenger is quoted as saying in The Sun.

" The question is, ´Are they going to be as good as the previous generation?´ And I am not so convinced by that.

" What made that team strong began to disappear because the players had reached their peak."

United trail Arsenal by nine points after just eight games of the season, but the giant has shown signs of emerging from its slumber in recent weeks and Wenger is all too aware that Ferguson´s side will not go down without a fight.

" They are rebuilding," added Wenger. " But they do remain title contenders."

Wenger, meanwhile, has reportedly been alerted to the possible availability of Michael Owen at Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are said to be prepared to listen to offers for their summer recruit and it is being claimed Wenger is keeping a close eye on the situation, along with Juventus.
