Man Utd duo edge closer to return

Saha and Brown have appeared infrequently this season
Striker Louis Saha and defender Wes Brown have taken a step closer to a return to full fitness after playing for Manchester United´s reserves.
The duo played the full 90 minutes in United´s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at the Regional Athletics Stadium.

Saha has played just twice for United during the current campaign.

Brown, who has angered boss Sir Alex Ferguson by failing to agree a new contract with the club, is recovering from ankle problem.

The England international defender, whose career has been dogged by a succession of injuries that have slowed down his progress, has missed United´s last two games.

Saha has also been plagued by injuries since his £12.8m move from Fulham in January

But both players could now be in contention for United´s Premiership game against Birmingham on 16 October.

One more push
Roy Keane has confirmed he will quit at the end of next season. The Manchester United midfielder said: “I’ve got this year and next year left and I still feel I can give 100 per cent to my club and country in that time.” He revealed he was attending yoga sessions, taking more rest and adapting his game to keep his injury-scarred body in shape. Keane said: " Yes, I have to rest more, my game has had to change and I have started to do yoga to help with stretching my muscles. It has taken discipline to make sure I get my rest. I have also had to lighten up a bit and not be so intense in training. But I still have a lot more to give yet. I am not on my last legs.” Keane refuses to use his ageing limbs as an excuse for what he considers to have been under-par performances for club and country. He said: “I don’t know why I’ve not been at my best. Hopefully, I will improve as the season goes on. Maybe I will peak in May!"

Still so Keane in green
Roy Keane insists he has no regrets about returning to international football because the Republic of Ireland have more ambition under Brian Kerr. Keane said: " The point against France was a good one but there is no need to be jumping up and down in the streets. There is still a long way to go. But I can sense the ambition and the ambitions are a lot higher than they used to be. Keane admits there is still a lot more to come, adding: " My own form could be better although contributing to the team is all that matters."

Fergie: I´ll stamp on Roon
Sir Alex Ferguson has vowed to " stamp down" on Wayne Rooney if the teenage striker allows himself to be distracted by his growing stardom. The Old Trafford boss has insisted that Rooney won´t get any special treatment, despite his £27m price tag. Ferguson said: " We have to remember we want him to be a top player in four or five years´ time. That means careful attention, like all the young boys at the club. He´ll get the same treatment as everybody else. He´ll get stamped down on if he steps out of line, but he´ll be praised at the right time. The most important thing for him is that everybody at Manchester United wants him to do well."

Browned off in the Reserves
Wes Brown´s Manchester United future was thrown into fresh doubt last night - when he was dumped in the reserves. Boss Sir Alex Ferguson forced Brown to play in the 2-1 mini-derby defeat to Manchester City. Brown has been singled out by Ferguson lately because he refuses to sign a new deal. Since Rio Ferdinand returned Brown has been squeezed out and he could not even get a game at centre-half for the reserves. Instead Brown was at right-back and his body language suggested he did not think much of the idea. United went in front through David Jones but City bundled in an equaliser before Lee Croft crossed under Brown´s nose for Bradley Wright-Phillips to head home. There was an injury scare for Louis Saha when he writhed in pain after he was cut down in a tackle. But Saha finished the game and will be pushing for contention in Ferguson´s side this weekend.

Fans united in show of force against Glazer
More Manchester United fans are answering the call to repel Malcolm Glazer, who is poised to make an £800million bid for the club. The influential Independent Manchester United Supporters Association have switched their monthly meeting tomorrow to a larger venue ´to finalise battle plans to fight Glazer´s takeover bid´. The Red Action Group has also been formed to work with the fans as well as Shareholders United, who are urging a boycott of club merchandise, cash being spent on shares instead. Ian Stirling, their co-ordinator, said: " We are aimed at organising demonstrations, leafleting and anything required to stop Glazer or anyone else who has designs on our club."

Fletcher Among Illustrious Company

During a press conference at Old Trafford recently, Sir Alex Ferguson was asked if he thought he had two of the most exciting teenagers in the game at the moment.

’Roonmania’ had reached its dizziest height, while Cristiano Ronaldo continued to wow audiences with his blur of stepovers and repertoire of tricks.

The Reds boss gleefully agreed, but added another name to the list of precocious United talents; Darren Fletcher. " We also think young Fletcher, who has not long turned 20, is a terrific talent," he pointed out.

" It´s not bad company to be linked with," admits the 20-year-old Scottish midfielder. " Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are always going to take the headlines and that is good for me because I don´t enjoy being in the papers."

Fletcher’s abilities are perhaps less blindingly obvious. A more subtle talent.

While Wayne Rooney rightly commanded the headlines with a hat-trick against Fenerbahce, an example of Fletcher’s attributes came in his assist for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s goal. Fletcher planted an incisive, cross-field pass right into the path of the Dutchman.

" I am sort of in the background," says Fletcher, who is currently away on international duty with Scotland. " I know I have a big part to play for Manchester United just now and even more so in the future.

" I am confident enough in my ability to know I can do a good job here. Maybe I won´t go around doing all the skills and scoring all the goals but there is another side to the game and I can let them get on with all the showboating."

The potential pitfalls for teenage footballers are constantly guarded against by Sir Alex Ferguson. But, ultimately, avoiding them is down to individual.

" It´s to do with your family and friends and the company you keep," says Darren. " If you can keep it low key and mix with people who you have known from a young age and know who you are, you will be fine.

" But if you start getting involved with people who just come along because of what you have done or what you could achieve, that is when you are in trouble. As long as I can keep my feet on the ground, I am sure I will be fine.

" The manager trying to keep you out of the spotlight does help. I experience it more in Scotland than I do down here. People get sick of seeing you. My mates say ´not you in the paper again´. You can get to a situation when you look in the paper and expect to see yourself all the time. It can give you false pretences."

Rooney will do well to learn from a player barely two years’ his senior. However, Fletcher admits Sir Alex has the unenviable and near impossible task of keeping the £27million striker out of the papers.

" Obviously Wayne Rooney is going to be a big attraction and the manager will do what he can, but if he keeps banging in hat-tricks it will be hard to keep him out of the headlines. But it won´t faze him [Rooney], he is just a normal lad who loves playing football.

" It´s okay to let it sink in as long as you don´t get too cocky; as long as you keep it to yourself. Wayne knows he is a good player but he doesn´t go around boasting about it.

" He knows what his abilities are, he doesn´t have to go telling people in the dressing room and in newspapers what he can do. He has got enough confidence in his own ability to go out and perform, come off the park and go back to being a normal lad."

:d) De Ridder Feeling Antsy At Ajax

Ajax wunderkind Daniël de Ridder has predicted that he will be moving before too long in search of first team football.

" It´s very probable that I will leave Ajax soon," he told local daily Het Parool. " At this stage of my career I have to play a lot of games.”

”At Ajax, I don´t play."

De Ridder joins a growing list of players who have shown public discontent with coach Ronald Koeman, including forward Wesley Sonck who was called in for a Monday meeting after making similar remarks in a Belgian newspaper last week.

:d) A Parme et à l´Ajax il devrait y avoir des joueurs à surveiller en fin de saison ^^

With the additions made to his squad over the summer, coupled with the players already at the club, Sir Alex Ferguson has superb attacking options at his disposal.

Options is the key word. There are so many different permutations up front, which makes our squad a very powerful threat.

Wayne Rooney can play in any number of attacking positions. He is devastatingly effective up front on his own, alongside another striker or playing the withdrawn role. I prefer to describe Wayne as a supremely talented footballer, not a striker. Where he plays is a matter of choice. Give him the ball in the final third and he will, as they say, do the business.

Of course, we have Paul Scholes still to return. He’s not been himself this season, but there are reasons for that. Going over to America to strengthen the squad on the tour was perhaps a step too far. The manager has acknowledged that. But, he’ll be back.

It’s only a year ago that people were lauding him as the best midfielder in the world. That sort of ability does not disappear in such a short space of time. I’m sure he’ll get back to that sort of form.

His position has changed recently with the additions of Rooney, Smith and Saha. But that is a good thing. Sir Alex now has alternatives in his armoury. They are all players we know can do it. In that central position going from midfield to attack we have strength in depth. In particular, Smith, Rooney and Scholes offer experience, power, skill and technical ability.

I mentioned in my column last week that we need to find the right partner for Keane. It may take a bit of experimenting from Sir Alex but it’s key to our success this season.

Roy has proved in recent weeks that he is still capable of being Roy Keane. He’s still able to exert his influence on the way the team plays. He’s no longer the tireless, box-to-box midfielder that he was five years ago, that is something most people, including Roy, are aware of.

But his experience and ability to steer the team forward is vital. If you watch our attacking moves he normally plays a crucial part; whether it’s breaking up an opposition attack or picking out a pass that kicks off a counter attack. It sounds like such a simple task, but it is a fine art that is difficult to do well at the highest level. It’s crucial to any successful team. That is what Roy Keane is all about. More often than not, if Roy does well Manchester United do well.

On a final note, one of the things with Wayne Rooney is that you keep forgetting he is just 18 years old. Watching the England game against Wales at the weekend, you could be forgiven for thinking Michael Owen was the sprightly teenager and Rooney is the powerful, experienced international striker.

You look at Rooney and think he is going to take the brunt of the physical flak from the defenders and the young lad up front, Owen, will be racing around picking up the pieces. In reality it is the other way around.

Reds rumours spark shares slump

Manchester United share prices have fallen amid rumours that a deal between Malcolm Glazer and John Magnier and JP McManus has collapsed.

At one stage, United´s share price dipped by more than 5% and while the loss was only 3% by mid-afternoon, the move was enough to suggest the City believes the story to be true.

Sources close to both parties as well as United themselves were remaining tight-lipped, though if the speculation proved to be accurate, it is thought a statement of some description would have to be made to the Stock Exchange as the club is currently in an Offer Period.

It would almost certainly mean the end of Glazer´s attempts to launch a takeover bid as without the 29% stake of major shareholders Magnier and McManus, the American owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL franchise would have no chance of completing the kind of buy-out required to appease the banks who were responsible for lending him the cash.

The supporters who have so actively attempted to deter Glazer´s involvement were waiting anxiously for further details just hours before a key meeting designed to formulate a battle plan for the weeks ahead.
