Downing plays down United link
Middlesbrough’s brilliant young winger Stewart Downing is staying calm, despite speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United.
Downing has made huge strides in recent weeks after he was given an extended run in Steve McClaren’s first team.
The 20-year-old´s sensational form helped guide Boro to European success at Banik Ostrava, before his strike at Old Trafford earlier this month helped his side to a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Red Devils chief Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for the England Under-21 star after seeing his clinical finish and reports have now linked Downing with United - who were believed to be monitoring the youngster last season.
Downing only penned a new long-term deal earlier this year after Boro managed to persuade him that his future was best served at his home-town club, despite interest from the likes of Rangers, Newcastle and United.
Downing’s agent Ian Elliott insists his young charge is calm about his future.
" I have not heard anything about United," Elliott told skysports.com.
" Stewart is calm and content at the moment.
" He is playing wonderfully well for Middlesbrough and England and that is the most important thing for him, to play on a regular basis.
" He is now showing everyone what most people on Teesside knew he was capable of.
" People are sitting up and taking notice and that is nice, but Stewart is happy.
" As we have always said, first team football is Stewart’s main concern and we all hope he has done enough in recent weeks to show that he is worthy of a starting place."
Downing is already being tipped as the answer to England problematic left hand side role, and Elliott admits that the Boro starlet could easily cope with the big stage.
" Stewart is performing brilliantly for the Under-21s and he has now produced top draw performances in Europe and against Manchester United," he added.
" This shows that Stewart is capable of performing at any level and I am sure he would not let anyone down if called upon, but obviously that is not something he is really thinking about at the moment.
" His main concern is Middlesbrough and playing ever week, and I would not have any doubts in saying that if he continues in his current vein of form - Sven Goran Eriksson will coming calling, sooner rather than later."
Pires: United brawl worth it
Arsenal´s Robert Pires believes the ugly scenes that marred the end of The Gunners´ goalless draw with Manchester United last season were worth it.
The Highbury side had five players hit by fines and bans by The Football Association for going after striker Ruud van Nistelrooy following his late penalty miss at Old Trafford.
Arsenal´s stars were unhappy with the Dutch international as they felt he went down too easily in the penalty area leading to a fracas at the full time whistle.
Despite being hit hard by The FA, Pires feels the punishments were acceptable as it helped the side carve out a psychological edge over their rivals.
" The scenes at the end of that match were controversial and earned some of our players suspensions and fines," explained Pires to the Sun.
" But we established a psychological stranglehold over United that day. You could say the sanctions we endured after that game were worth it.
" English fans dream of seeing us going to Old Trafford to seek a 50th unbeaten game. But what interests us is to be champions."
The Red Devils will have a chance to exact revenge on Arsene Wenger´s side when the pair meet in The Premiership at Old Trafford on October 24.
We´re brawl over you
Robert Pires says Manchester United are scared of Arsenal — less than two weeks before the two clubs clash. He reckons the Gunners’ rivals are STILL shaken by last November’s infamous Battle of Old Trafford. The Arsenal ace said: “The scenes at the end of that match were controversial and earned some of our players suspensions and fines. But we established a psychological stranglehold over United that day."

Roy takes the plunge
Roy Keane was plunged into the freezing Irish Sea as a reward for his heroic performance against France. Keane and his Republic of Ireland team-mates fought out a 0-0 draw in Paris on Saturday. The players thought they would return home to their Portmarnock Golf Links Hotel base for a rest and a massage to ease their aching limbs. Instead, boss Brian Kerr decided to use the healing powers of the ice-cold sea water.

Rio: Only trophies can end ban hell
Rio Ferdinand last night admitted that unless he wins a major honour with England he will never escape the shadow of his eight-month drugs ban. Ferdinand said: " I know it´s not going to be easy to stop people talking about what happened. In fact, I know it´s going to be really difficult. The only way to move on is to do what I do best, and that´s playing football. I just want it to go down as an unfortunate part of my career and that it can be forgotten about."

We´ll put three on Rooney
Wayne Rooney will be given special attention by Azerbaijan in Baku tomorrow, with coach Carlos Alberto planning to use three men to mark him. " We know this young boy is a very good player," said Alberto. " I saw many games in Euro 2004 and he has made a great start for Manchester United. There are two or three of our players who will have to take care of him."

Ferguson Fash hash
Alex Ferguson once ordered police to arrest one of Wimbledon’s black players — but picked out the wrong man. Former Dons manager Bobby Gould has revealed how Fergie burst into their dressing room with the police after John Fashanu had punched United defender Viv Anderson. But, after ordering the officers to make an arrest, the angry Scot picked out innocent defender Eric Young rather than judo-expert Fashanu.
