Fergie´s Scholes blunder

Sir Alex Ferguson says that he brought Paul Scholes back into action too soon.

Scholes has been criticised for a below-par start to the season, but the Manchester United manager is shouldering the blame for that.

Ferguson says that Scholes was flown out to join their American tour too soon, as he was not given enough time in pre-season.

" People have remarked that Paul Scholes has been a bit flat at the moment," said Ferguson.

" I think we brought him back too early from pre-season training.

" He had only three days´ preparation and a bit of a groin injury, so what the fans have seen is not the real Paul Scholes.

" He´ll be fine in a few more weeks."

Scholes was flown out to the USA after United´s tour had come under fire for not fielding enough first-team stars.

Scholes then played in the Community Shield and Ferguson believes this is the reason for his subdued start, despite retiring from international football.

Fergie waits to assess youth

Sir Alex Ferguson feels Manchester United boast a new batch of fledglings ready to burst in to the first team picture.

The long-serving United boss has twice brought through a generation of young players during his 18 years at Old Trafford.

He is now on the verge of completing the hat-trick after admitting The Red Devils have several promising youngsters coming through the ranks.

The likes of Ritchie Jones and Paul McShane ( pictured) are close to joining the first team squad, along with Giuseppe Rossi and Gerard Pique who were brought to the club in the summer.

Those players have been performing well in the reserves this season and Ferguson is keen to assess whether they can step up to the next level.

Ferguson admits he waits for direction from his coaches about the club´s up-and-coming youngsters and looks forward to weighing up the latest crop´s potential.

" I always say to Brian ( McClair), Ricky ( Sbragia) and Francisco ( Filho), ´tell me when you´ve got a player that is ready to step up´," said Ferguson on the club´s official website.

" And we´d take him in to our first team training. That way we can give him a taste of training with the first team but also have a look at him.

" We have several young players who are approaching that level. Ritchie Jones is doing very well, young Giuseppe Rossi and Gerard Pique and Floribert N´Galula.

" They are players that are improving quite rapidly. There is also young defender Paul McShane doing well. We´ve got a good collection of young lads actually.

" The only thing that you have to counsel yourself on with young players is that you want to see them when they get in to that situation where they have a chance of being involved with the first team.

" You´re looking to see how they cope with crossing that line, crossing the Rubicon."

Rooney wants to carry on

Wayne Rooney wants England to continue with a three-man attack after admitting he was not surprised by his starting position against Wales.

The Manchester United starlet was deployed in a role behind Jermain Defoe and Michael Owen for Saturday´s 2-0 World Cup qualifying success.

With no options on the left flank, England coach Sven Goran Eriksson reverted to a diamond formation with Rooney the link between midfield and attack.

Rooney relished the position at Old Trafford and is keen to continue in the same vein for Wednesday´s qualifier in Azerbaijan.

" There was a lot of space for me to get on the ball and I think I made things happen," said Rooney.

" It always takes a bit of time to get used to a new role. But Wales left a lot of space for me to get on the ball, run at the defence, have a few shots and play others in and that´s what I did.

" I think it worked well on Saturday and, if it continues to work well, there´s no reason why I shouldn´t carry on playing there. I´m happy to play anywhere."

The 18-year-old feels he can now take over Paul Scholes´ mantle in the England team following his United team-mate´s international retirement after Euro 2004.

Rooney admits he was expecting to be asked to operate in Scholes´ position against Wales and remains willing to play wherever he is wanted by Eriksson.

He added: " It´s not a role I ever imagined myself playing because I´m a striker and I like ducking and diving with my back to goal.

" But Paul Scholes was a big loss to England when he retired from international football in the summer so I wasn´t too surprised when it was first suggested I play in that position.

" To be honest, I was almost expecting to be asked to play there when the manager named five strikers in the squad.

" It´s something new for me and a role I still have to get used to.

" But as a professional footballer you have to be good enough to play where you´re told by the manager."

Wenger: Winning the treble is now impossible
Arsene Wenger last night ruled out an Arsenal assault on the FA Cup, claiming: " It´s impossible to win the Treble." The Arsenal boss blamed fixture congestion for his side´s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Chelsea last season as it came four days after the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United. This season, Wenger has vowed not to make the same mistake again and has seemingly ruled out a challenge for one of the most famous club competitions in the world. Manchester United won the Treble in 1999 but Wenger said: " Trying to fight on the three fronts is impossible because of the calendar."

Carlo is ready to move
Chelsea keeper Carlo Cudicini is poised to hand in a transfer request after becoming disillusioned with life under Jose Mourinho and attracting the attention of Manchester United. Cudicini has lost his place to Petr Cech this season and no longer wants to remain on the bench while other clubs are prepared to offer him first-team football. United are one of a number of clubs who are keeping close tabs on the situation. And while Chelsea are very reluctant to listen to offers for a keeper who was widely regarded as the top stopper in the League over the past two seasons, his increasing frustration could eventually lead to his exit.

Revealed - what Premiership managers earn
Manchester United are not top of the league any more - but Sir Alex Ferguson is still top of the pay tree. The Old Trafford boss is the highest paid club boss in British football. His reign of success is reflected in his £3.1million salary, some £800,000 a year ahead of his nearest rival, Arsene Wenger of Arsenal. The Sunday Mirror has been shown a list of all 20 Premiership bosses´ wages over a 12-month period. It´s no surprise to find that the three leading Premiership clubs pay the biggest wages.

Souey raid for Neville
Newcastle are ready to offer Kieron Dyer as the bait to land England defender Phil Neville from Manchester United. Toon boss Graeme Souness views 27-year-old Neville as the ideal replacement for left back Olivier Bernard, who is stalling over a new contract offer. Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson doesn´t want to lose utility man Neville, but could be tempted by a possible part-exchange deal involving Dyer. But he could face competition from Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren, who knows all about Neville´s dependability from his work with England.

Ibanez is eyed as Brown replacement
Manchester United are looking at Atletico Madrid defender Pablo Ibanez as a potential replacement for Wes Brown. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is tracking Espanyol´s Carlos Kameni as he bids to solve his goalkeeper problems. The 20-year-old Cameroon international, snapped up from Le Havre for £300,000 in the summer, is proving to be one of La Liga´s top stoppers.

Fergie: Heinze fella reminds me of Passarella
Sir Alex Ferguson will admit that South Americans have hardly ever come top of his most wanted list. It´s something about their volatile, unpredictable temperament that has made the Manchester United boss think twice about signing their fiery stars in the past. Juan Sebastian Veron - a £28.1million signing from Lazio - and £6.9m Uruguayan capture Diego Forlan from Independiente hardly had them demanding encores at the Theatre of Dreams. But that 30-odd year management theory has now gone out of the window with the arrival of Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze. Fergie is openly delighted with the £6.9m defender he now compares to the legendary Argentine World Cup captain Daniel Passarella.

Solid Irish miss big chance as O´Shea drops a clanger ( France 0 Rep. Ireland 0)
John O´Shea let France off the hook with a glaring miss as Ireland failed to claim the win they deserved in Paris. Manchester United defender O´Shea could have put Brian Kerr´s men halfway to Germany 2006 had he hit the target from six yards 20 minutes from time. But he inexplicably sent Andy Reid´s cross wide of the far post to hand France a lifeline in Group Four.

Ole the good guy
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may be struggling to resurrect his career following what has been described as make-or-break surgery to cure a long-term knee problem but personal crisis took second place to unselfish benevolence last week. The Norway forward made an unsolicited £100,000 donation to UNICEF - the children´s charity adopted by his club, Manchester United.

Queiroz in Ron plea
Manchester United No 2 Carlos Queiroz has angrily accused Portugal of treating Cristiano Ronaldo like a " second-hand car going over pot-holes." Sir Alex Ferguson´s assistant is furious with his country for refusing to allow the teenage star to rest his troublesome groin. Queiroz said Ronaldo, selected for yesterday´s World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein and Wednesday´s match against Russia, has no time to train between games at United because he is always on the treatment table. Queiroz said: " When I use a hire car I don´t usually worry about the pot-holes because I know if the vehicle gets damaged there will be somebody to pay for the cost."

Rooney: Stick With Us
Wonder-kid Wayne Rooney last night pleaded for the Three Lions to be let loose on Azerbaijan on Wednesday. Sven Goran Eriksson´s gamble of using Rooney, Michael Owen and Jermain Defoe in a three-pronged attack paid off against Wales and put England in pole position in World Cup qualifying Group Six. Rooney said: " I think it worked well against Wales and if it keeps working well there´s no reason why I shouldn´t continue to play there. It wasn´t easy for me to play in a new role but I feel comfortable there."

Roo: I´m New Scholes
Wayne Rooney believes he has been earmarked as England’s new Paul Scholes, after ripping Wales to shreds at Old Trafford. Teen sensation Rooney is already resigned to the job of playing behind the front two, even though he confesses he will always consider himself a striker. The £27million Manchester United star was unstoppable in the hole behind Michael Owen and Jermain Defoe during Saturday’s 2-0 win against the Welsh. And as England were preparing to fly out to Baku today, Rooney admitted: “It’s not a role I ever imagined myself playing because I’m a striker and I like ducking and diving with my back to goal.

Me And Sol Can Go On
Rio Ferdinand shrugged off his impressive England return as “just another game, mate.” The Manchester United defender looked rock solid alongside Sol Campbell at the heart of Sven Goran Eriksson’s rearguard. Ferdinand, 25, was back after serving an eight-month ban for failing to attend a drugs test and resumed his partnership with Campbell for only the third time in 26 internationals since the 2002 World Cup finals. But the former West Ham and Leeds star refused to accept his return to the international fold was anything to get excited about. He said: “I think you can get too deep in thinking about all the different surrounding issues."

Michael Glowing For Nev
Gary Neville mastered his Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs, then hailed the much-maligned Michael Owen. Hitman Owen, 24, has come under fire because his England form has dipped following a so-far ill-fated switch to Real Madrid. The United right-back, 29, said: “Michael and the other two lads up front were so lively. They were electric.

Rio Giggle
Rio Ferdinand insists England are laughing all the way towards world domination under Sven Goran Eriksson. Ferdinand made a towering return to the international scene alongside Sol Campbell at the heart of England’s defence in the 2-0 win over Wales at Old Trafford. Ferdinand, 25, revealed: “Just the other day me and Sol watched a practice game in training and it was unbelievable. The pair of us just stood there laughing our heads off looking at the amount of talent we have got in the squad."

Rio Made Hartson Look Like A Lump Of Meat
The ghost of what might have been and what may yet come to pass strode out into a brisk breeze at Old Trafford on Saturday knowing that the haunting was over at last. A ghost with his hair arranged in cornrows. A ghost with a long, elegant stride. His face set and grim. A ghost who played so masterfully he might have been from another world. Rio Ferdinand has hovered like a spectre over the flawed endeavours of the England side these past 12 months as everyone did their best to pretend we were getting on just fine without him. But when his purgatory ended against a desperately disappointing Wales team, his return was laced with such brutal efficiency it proved exactly what we have been missing.

Giggs Left To Rue A Damp Squib Display
Ryan Giggs attempted to take the postives out of this disappointing defeat. It was a difficult task, rather like picking out a Welsh team-mate in the final third of the pitch. Giggs said: " We were disappointed, overall, with our attacking play. We showed, at times, that we could play our football, that we could cause England some problems. But we didn´t go on to that next step in the last third."

United Linked With Downing Swoop

Manchester United are understood to be considering a New Year swoop for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing - using Phil Neville as bait.

Sir Alex Ferguson made an enquiry about Downing last season and is back on his trail after the 20-year-old´s goalscoring display for Boro at Old Trafford eight days ago.

The Red Devils boss knows how highly England Under-21 star Downing is rated at The Riverside, and that he signed a new long-term contract earlier this year.

But Ferguson hopes that Boro boss Steve McClaren´s high regard for the versatility of Neville may persuade him to do business.

Neville has struggled to break into the United first team this season, and Ferguson has been told he must sell before he can buy again following his summer swoop for Wayne Rooney.

But it would require United to make a significant cash offer plus Neville before Boro even contemplated doing business for Downing, who is fast emerging as one of the brightest talents in English football.
