Rio is keen to become captain Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand last night revealed his desire to take over the Manchester United captaincy from current skipper Roy Keane. Ferdinand said: " I´d be stupid not to accept the captaincy if it was offered further down the line. It was an unbelievable feeling to lead the team out on Tuesday. I was delighted to be asked to follow the long line of players who have led out the team."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror
Rio Enjoys Temporary Captaincy
Rio Ferdinand enjoyed his night as captain against Fenerbahce but says the armband will be back with Roy Keane as soon as the club skipper returns.
Ferdinand, playing in only his third match since returning from an eight-month ban, was selected as captain by Ferguson - a tremendous acknowledgement of his influence in the back four, and a moment to remember for the Reds defender.
" It was an unbelievable feeling," he told MUTV. " To become captain having only been back for a week was a great feeling for me. To walk out down the tunnel at Old Trafford as captain was fantastic."
Ferdinand admits he had no inkling he would be given the captain´s armband. " I didn´t know anything about it," he said. " It was a great surprise.
" But, when Roy Keane is back, he will be captain and we will all walk out behind him. It was just good to be back playing Champions League again," he added.
The 26-year-old has had a stabilising effect on United´s defence since returning against Liverpool last week.
United leaked two sloppy goals against their Group D Turkish opponents, however, and Rio says making the Reds defence water-tight will take time.
" Nothing is going to be ironed out in defence overnight. If we have problems at the back it is not going to be corrected in one week.
" It takes a longer period of time to work on it on the training pitch. The sooner we stamp goals out like we conceded [on Tuesday] the better for us.
" But if we win our home games then we can qualify for the next stage. We are certainly capable of doing that."
That task appears to have been made easier by the four strikers Ferguson now has at his disposal. Ferdinand added: " The quartet we have here now is great. All four of them can play together from what we have seen in training."

Man Utd v Middlesbro preview
Steve McClaren is determined Middlesbrough recover from their European exploits when they face Manchester United and another potential Wayne Rooney show on Sunday.
The Boro boss returns to his former club with a record at Old Trafford comparable to any other Premiership club, although last season´s two-goal hero Juninho has since been sold to Celtic. In the Brazilian´s place, the likes of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Mark Viduka have both scored at the ´Theatre of Dreams´ in the past.
The Teessiders should be able to call upon several of the players who did not make the trip to Banik Ostrava, although updates will be required on the likes of Hasselbaink, Viduka, Ray Parlour and Ugo Ehiogu.
Gaizka Mendieta has recovered from a calf problem and impressive youngster James Morrison promoted his claims with the injury time equaliser on Thursday night. Long-term casualty Michael Reiziger is definitely sidelined.
" I don´t think we´ve been distracted by our games in Europe," claimed McClaren. " I have enough experience of European nights to know there can sometimes be a reaction by teams in their next league match.
" So it is important we do not allow our performance levels to drop in any match we take part in."
United should have few problems coming out of their 6-2 hiding of Fenerbahce on Tuesday night as the euphoria concerning Rooney´s debut has still to subside.
The teenager will make his Premiership debut for his new club against Boro as Sir Alex Ferguson ponders his options again.
Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo were rested in the UEFA Champions League but should return, and there may be a place for Darren Fletcher, who came on as a substitute against Fenerbahce, as Ferguson continues to tinker with his midfield quartet.
Alan Smith failed to even get off the bench on Tuesday but will be keen to figure against one of the clubs that tried to buy him from Leeds United, although Louis Saha is close to being available for selection.
Indeed, only Paul Scholes appears to be missing for the rampant Red Devils so Ferguson´s starting XI is virtually impossible to predict.
Skysports.com Prediction: 2-1.
The Czech Republic trip and ´Roomania´ mean all the signs point to a home win - despite Boro´s outstanding record at Old Trafford.
