Lyon 2 United 2
Ruud van Nistelrooy scored a dramatic double to cap a brilliant fightback by Manchester United. And the striker’s second-half salvo made him the club’s greatest goalscorer in European competition. His tally of 30 puts him two clear of Denis Law. And his side were grateful as United looked down and out at half-time after conceding goals to Cris and Pierre-Alain Frau following a poor first period. But in only his second game back since Euro 2004, Van Nistelrooy worked his magic to drag Alex Ferguson’s men back from the brink. And he saved keeper Tim Howard’s blushes after his blunder led to Lyon’s first goal. Van Nistelrooy scored twice in five minutes to earn United a draw in their Group D opener.

Van´s the Lyon king
Record-breaking Ruud van Nistelrooy was exonerated from blame as Sir Alex Ferguson blasted Manchester United last night. Van Nistelrooy hit two goals in five minutes early in the second half to salvage a 2-2 Champions League draw for United in Lyon. But it was a mixed night for manager Ferguson, who said: " Over the whole game only three players - Ruud, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze - reached the right standard. I don´t think I would be doing my job right if I hadn´t been terribly disappointed at half-time with some of the elements of our play."
Richard Tanner, Daily Express
Ruud´s law
Denis Law hailed Ruud van Nistelrooy as his record-breaking exploits saved Manchester United. Van Nistelrooy, 28, scored twice to surpass Law’s all-time goal record in Europe. And the Dutchman’s brace, which puts him two clear of Law on 30, earned United a point after falling 2-0 behind in their Champions League opener. Law said: “I’m delighted for Ruud. It could not happen to a nicer guy. He deserves this. And to do it in the way he did is fantastic.”

Yobo´s agony
Joseph Yobo reckons playing for Nigeria has ruined his chances of joining Manchester United, Arsenal or Chelsea. Everton centre-back Yobo, 24, said: “A lot of people don’t understand the sacrifices we players make to play for Nigeria. I have lost out on big moves because I play for my country. Arsenal, United and Chelsea have come to talk to me. We agreed terms but then they asked me if I would consider quitting international football. When I said no, that was usually the end of it. But I will continue to play internationals as long as I can because I have to give back to my country.”

Brazilia carnaval ! !!!!

Rio dubbed ´Europe´s best´
Ferdinand´s last league game was against Wolves in January
Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp believes Rio Ferdinand is the best centre-half in Europe as the Manchester United prepares to return after his ban.
Absent for the last eight months after missing a drugs test, Ferdinand is set to play against Liverpool on Monday.
Redknapp, who nurtured Ferdinand at West Ham, told BBC Sport: " I think he is the best defender in Europe.
" People say Alessandro Nesta is different class, but Rio is a special, special player. He has everything."
Redknapp added: He has got pace, he is good on the ball, and at 6ft 4in, he´s good in the air."
" Rio knows he´s made a mistake and he has got on with it. Ithink he will come back as strong as ever.
" It´s been difficult for him. He has missed Euro 2004, the FA Cup Final, World Cup qualifiers - those are big games.
" It must have been very hard for him sitting there watching his teammates play, because he loves playing football.
" Alex Ferguson thinks he´s coped well. Heis a naturally fit boy and has trained well, so he will come back fit.
" I don´t think he has anything to prove to anyone. As far as I´m concerned I think he is the best defender in Europe.
" I´ve thought he was a fantastic player ever since he went to Bournemouth on loan. I never had any doubts he was going to be a top player.
" He also has a strong character. He is not the first young player to make a mistake.
" I don´t think he realised the importance of the test , he has certainly knows it know.
" But he has it in his makeup to come back and I think he will come back as strong as ever.
" He has had strong support from his family and from Alex Ferguson and he is at a great club.
" I think he will show to everyone how much Manchester United have missed him."
Redknapp believes that United, both during last season and the current campaign have suffered in Ferdinand´s absence.
" They´ve missed him massively," said Redknapp.
" You can´t take a top player out of your team and not miss him. It´s the equivalent of Arsenal losing Thierry Henry or Patrick Vieira."
However Redknapp also thinks that Arsenal´s lead in the Premiership could be to big a points gap for United to overhaul.
He said: " United have it all to do. Can you give Arsenal a nine-point lead, it´s very doubtful, though when Alex gets them all back - Rio, Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha - they´ll go on a run and they won´t lose that many games."
Ferdinand raring to go
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is counting down the minutes to the end of his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test.
Ferdinand, 25, is available for the first time since 17 January when United face Liverpool at home on Monday.
" I cannot tell you how much I´ve been looking forward to this day.
" Whether or not I´m picked to play against Liverpool it is a big moment. I´m available for selection again," Ferdinand told The Sun newspaper.
He added: " I´m not asking anyone to feel sorry for me. I´m just telling it as it was. I still feel I was unjustly treated but how long can you stay angry for?
" If I needed any help they have been keeping count for me.
" There is definitely a debt of honour to repay Sir Alex Ferguson and I intend to repay him by putting in top-class performances.
" I´ve been doing extra training and have probably worked harder than I did when I was playing because you are not keeping back energy for games.
" I have been training harder than ever so that when I do return, I can hit the ground running."
Ferdinand´s ban coincided with a loss of form for United as they lost top-spot in the Premiership and finished the season third behind Arsenal and Chelsea.
For a young lad... how he has handled the situation is phenomenal
Sir Alex Ferguson
He missed the FA Cup final and Euro 2004 as a result of the ban, which he failed to overturn at an appeal, and deeply regrets being sidelined for so long.
" I was really angry for a few days after my appeal was turned down and it´s driven me mad having to watch the team when I could be out there helping," said Ferdinand.
" You kick every ball, see every pass, score with every shot. It is the most frustrating thing of all.
" I´ve trained with the lads every day, gone to sleep in the afternoons as I usually do, eaten all the right foods and done everything I normally do.
" I felt like my head was going to explode but I thought the best way to deal with it all was to keep on training, even though there might have seemed little point at the time."
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed Ferdinand from Leeds for £29.1m in 2002, said: " I couldn´t have any more praise and admiration for him.
" He has had to come in and train with guys who have played international football, in the European Championship or the Champions League when he has been missing it.
" For a young lad that is a lot but how he has handled the situation is phenomenal. In their wisdom, the FA has prevented him playing in closed-door matches, so effectively it has been a nine-month ban, but Rio has come through it well."
England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said last month that he would be " surprised" if Ferdinand was not in his squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Azerbaijan in October.
" Rio Ferdinand is one of the best players you can find in Europe or the world," said the Swede.
I won´t forget Monday
Rio Ferdinand has Monday, September 20, stamped on his brain. It is a date even he will never forget. The Manchester United and England star’s eight-month ban will be over when Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Monday night. It comes three days short of a year since that fateful lunchtime when he walked out of United’s Carrington training ground and went shopping instead of attending a drug test.

Ruud Fears Kop KO
Ruud van Nistelrooy fears United will crash to Liverpool if there is any repeat of their poor display in Lyon. The Dutch striker scored twice as United came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with the French champions on Wednesday. But it was another under-par showing by Alex Ferguson’s men, particularly in the first half. He said: “We cannot keep having games like Lyon. If we repeat our first-half performance we will be facing defeat to Liverpool."

Rio: My Regret
Rio Ferdinand today reveals the torment he suffered and lessons he learned from his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test. The Manchester United and England defender is set for a return against Liverpool on Monday night after 244 days out of competitive action. And £29million Ferdinand admitted he will return from his enforced absence a stronger and wiser character following the episode which has tarnished his career. Ferdinand said: " Their support has been fantastic and it has meant so much to me because it´s been such a frustrating time."

Ban Made Me Realise How Lucky I Am
Rio Ferdinand has revealed for the first time the debt he owes Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United for standing by him throughout his eight-month ban for missing a drugs test. Ferdinand´s suspension ends tomorrow and with United´s defence in a shambolic state, his lack of match fitness is likely to be overlooked so he can make an instant return for United´s Premiership clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday night. " After what´s happened there´s definitely a debt of honour to the boss and the club and I intend to repay them by putting in top class performances from now on," said Ferdinand.

Hughes: I Said No To United
Mark Hughes last night revealed he turned down a cushy number with Manchester United because he wanted to be his own man - and his own manager. Hughes finally arrived at the Premiership hot-seat he wanted when he took over at Blackburn yesterday. An Old Trafford legend as a player, Hughes could have gone back to his spiritual home as one of Sir Alex Ferguson´s backroom team. But the proud Welshman fancied making his way in management with the kind of direct approach he demonstrated as one of football´s most uncompromising strikers. Hughes said: " I had an opportunity to go back to United about 18 months ago, but it was in a different role and not in the number two job. I didn´t think it was right for me."

> Vivement le retour de rio sa va faire beaucoup de bien a la defense qui en a besoin^^
SOLARI TO MAN UTD
Manchester United have been alerted to the fact that Real Madrid midfielder Santiago Solari is unlikely to be offered a new contract when his current deal ends at the end of this season. Alex Ferguson has tried to sign the midfielder on numerous occasions and according to reports from Spain, he will hold talks with the 28-year-old at Old Trafford in January.
