=>"ANOTHER GOALIE AND TWO MIDFIELDERS FROM REAL?" ( RED ISSUE........)

Story by Editor 13 April 2003

Howard, Makelele and Geremi

The Screws say that United have targeted American keeper Tim Howard

It says that talks have already opened with the £3m-rated player’s club, the New York MetroStars. The goalie says: " I have spoken to somebody from Manchester United but am not at liberty to say who. It´s awesome and you dream about things like this. Until it becomes reality I can´t let myself get consumed by thinking about it, but it certainly plays a part in my thinking."

Meanwhile the Sunday Mirror says Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele wants to join United in a £10million deal.

Tabs on Saturday were saying that proposed £8 million transfer for Geremi was a goer.

A BUCK-TOOTHED BOY FROM BRAZIL

Story by Editor 13 April 2003

Ronaldinho for £10 million?

From The Times:

Manchester United have entered negotiations to sign Ronaldinho, the Brazil forward, in an extraordinary cut-price transfer deal that could cost as little as £10 million. Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to exploit the financial uncertainty at Paris Saint-Germain by seeing off competition from AC Milan for the 23-year-old, who is best known for scoring the goal that eliminated England from last summer’s World Cup finals.

Significantly, he is also one of the foremost clients of Nike, having fronted their recent worldwide television advertising campaign. Nike, the American sportswear company, has invested heavily to become the official kit supplier of United and Brazil, although the extent of its involvement in what would effectively be a marriage between three of its main clients is not yet clear.

Ed. The Express also run this story and rumours about this have persisted since the start of this season and may be well founded.

BECKHAM NOT GOING TO GET REAL

Story by Editor 13 April 2003

United deny transfer reports

A report in the Mail on Sunday claims a deal between us and Real is virtually sealed, quoting " a top-level source" as saying: " Everyone here is desperately trying to keep it under wraps until the season has completed."

Sir Alex Ferguson believes the stories linking Beckham to Real are timed to coincide with the Champions´ League quarter-final between the clubs. A club spokesman insisted: " This story is categorically untrue."

The independent reckon Beckham´s value to Real would be as much for his huge commercial muscle, especially in the Far East, as for his talent on the field. The Madrid giants are keen to upstage United in the global marketing and merchandising battle. In recent years Real have always got their man with Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo and Ronaldo recruited.

=>"INJURY UPDATE"

Story by Editor 13 April 2003

Fergie: " We have got two or three injuries."

" Roy came off with a dead leg.

" The most serious is John O´Shea who has a knee injury after a tackle from ( Alan) Shearer. Brown has a tight hamstring and so does Giggs.

" It´s a great confidence boost - no question about that. We played very well and created some good openings. It was a matter of being patient and when we got back into the game we played some fantastic football.

" We would have accepted this score before the game! We´re set up nicely now and have got to the position I hoped we would get to some months ago."

Story by Editor 13 April 2003

Sir Alex, The Ginger Prince, Sir Bobby and a complete absence of post match quotes from Stinks Of Piss

Fergie

" It´s a great confidence boost - no question about that. We played very well and created some good openings. It was a matter of being patient and when we got back into the game we played some fantastic football.

" We learned from it ( Madrid). A lot of our players are young so it was good to get the experience from Madrid and come here knowing it was such an important game - and produce.

" Just one more goal and we would have been level with Arsenal.

" We would have accepted this score before the game!

" We´re set up nicely now and have got to the position I hoped we would get to some months ago.

" It´s a great confidence boost for Wednesday night. It´s the biggest game of the season now. We´ve got ourselves into the position we wanted to be, but to predict winning titles is a bit foolish."

" Everyone thought Arsenal had won the title, but they are changing their minds now. It will be closer than anyone thought, and in the Arsenal players´ minds all the time will be the thought that they shouldn´t have said those over-confident things early in the season."

´I have always said that as long as we went into the Arsenal fixture level, or a point or so behind, I would be happy because then it´s in your own hands. Three points in front is a definite bonus.

´If we were to win the title, after the rocky start we made and having seven players out for operations, it would be one of our greatest ever achievements.´ But Ferguson is still not predicting anything. United have their spirit back: from here on in it is up to the players.

The Ginger Prince

" We´re very pleased to have won the way we did. We always get a bit of criticism when we get beaten ( Madrid) but I think that was the best response we could have had. " St James´ Park is always a difficult ground to come to and at 1-0 down I think we would have been happy to take the point but we scored four goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

" We knew Arsenal´s goal difference was five ahead before the game. Seven or eight wasn´t beyond us today but unfortunately it didn´t happen."

Wor Bobby Robson

" On Tuesday I saw Manchester United outsmarted in Madrid. Today I´ve seen Manchester United outplay and outmanoeuvre us. It was just a mental abberation on our part. I don´t know why. I don´t know if United will win the title. If I knew that, I´d put £1m on them at 7-4 or whatever it is. All I know is Arsenal and Manchester United are ahead of everyone else. They´re two well-matched teams. It´ll be a marvellous game on Wednesday night."

" I thought before the match that we would give Manchester United their most difficult away game. As it turns out, we´ve actually given them their easiest match.

" It was a mental aberration as far as I´m concerned. It was always going to be a test and a challenge for us, but through that mental situation, we looked physically weak.

" We couldn´t get anywhere near them. They were too good for us, too clever for us, but our defence - and not only our defence - were poor in track, mark and tackle, and I learnt that as a schoolboy."

Shearer

Despite many internet searches only quotes from before the match can be found

On the match yesterday:

" The most important thing tomorrow is that we get back to winning ways"

" Now we´ve got a massive game to get back into our winning ways. Nobody knows just where we´re going to finish in the Premiership table.

" We´ve just got to keep on playing and if we beat Manchester United, then things could be wide open again."

And this, regarding their last match with Everton:

" It was a coward´s challenge by Gravesen because Olivier went to win the ball and did win it, and Gravesen went in to hurt him and he hurt him badly," said Shearer.

" It is a challenge that could finish a player´s career. It should have been a straight red and everyone could see it."

Interesting that once Shearer had been booked yesterday for his 3rd bad foul that United took command.

Hat-trick hero Paul Scholes blasted Manchester United to the top of the Premiership and killed Newcastle´s title dream. Delighted Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes the stunning demolition of Newcastle gives his side a massive psychological boost before the make-or- break Premiership clash with title rivals Arsenal on Wednesday. But the sensational victory came at a cost with skipper Roy Keane, John O´Shea, Ryan Giggs and Wes Brown all picking up injuries that could keep them out of the Highbury showdown. Newcastle went ahead with a super strike from Jermaine Jenas but United roared back to go in 4-1 up at the interval thanks to two goals from Paul Scholes and others by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ryan Giggs. Scholes completed his hat-trick in the second half before Ruud van Nistelrooy hit the sixth from the penalty spot with his 18th League goal of the season. Shola Ameobi pulled back a late goal for the outclassed home side.
Brian McNally, Sunday Mirror

Wenger and Fergie in war of words
Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are embroiled in an explosive war of words just three days before their sides clash in the title showdown at Highbury. Wenger claimed Ferguson was unimportant and should grow up after the United boss attempted to unsettle his bitter rival with mind games ahead of the Highbury encounter. Deliberately taunting the Frenchman and his players ahead of the game, he claimed they would regret boasting they would win the League by going unbeaten all season. Ferguson said: " After all the things that Arsenal came out with about winning the League and going unbeaten throughout the season it is satisfying going to Highbury on top of the league. I think the comments they made could come back to haunt them. The one thing that will be continually on Arsenal´s mind over the coming weeks are those boasts."

Peter the great is quitting
Peter Schmeichel is to quit football at the end of the season after a glorious career as one of the world´s top goalkeepers. The Manchester United legend, currently with Manchester City, says he can no longer take the rigours of top level football. He said: " It has taken a month of soul searching to make this decison, the most difficult of my life."
Bill Mills, Sunday Mirror

We can beat United
Patrick Vieira is fully expecting United to wind up his Arsenal boys, and physically unsettle them in an attempt to cover up their footballing inferiority. That´s Manchester United he´s talking about, not Sheffield United. Arsenal take on Warnock´s warriors today in an FA Cup semi-final. Sir Alex Ferguson, who has made no secret of his desire to take the Frenchman to Old Trafford, will be fuming when he reads what Vieira has to say, especially after his side´s stunning performance in their 6-2 success at Newcastle yesterday. Cocky, cocky Arsenal are at it again, with Vieira upping the ante ahead of the Gunners´ most important four days of the season.
Anthony Clavane, Sunday Mirror

Scholes leads goal riot
That Paul Scholes is a load of old rubbish isn´t he? Busted flush or what? Hasn´t scored for England in donkey´s years. God only knows why Eriksson picks him ahead of Kieron Dyer. This was the certifiable view expressed by one local scribe in a Geordie paper yesterday morning. But it served its purpose. For the article, penned by Tyneside´s answer to Mohamed Saeed al-Sahaf - which attacked the England midfielder´s " limitations" and argued Sven´s fixation on Scholes was " so unfair on Dyer" - was angrily waved about in the visitors´ changing-room before the game. No doubt another pre-match gem was pinned to the United wall - the one by young Kieron warning the ginger-haired one his central-midfield position in the national team was up for grabs. " I´m after your job Scholes!" is the kind of headline that immediately brings to mind red rags and a bulls. Scholes - outstanding for the Reds all season, although admittedly less effective for England ( surely more to do with the fact that United are a superior force) - gave, as they say, the perfect reply.
Anthony Clavane, Sunday Mirror

Now United have edge in mother of all matches
Roll on Wednesday! This is going to be the mother of all heavyweight contests between two teams who are simply a class above the rest. Forget the hiccup in Madrid, United´s league form has been awesome since Boxing Day when they lost against Middlesbrough. Since then they have been the best team in the country and that gives them a vital psychological advantage. It was always going to be interesting to see how United responded to being beaten by Real but I never imagined they would bounce back with six glorious goals. The manner of their win at Newcastle was sensational and provided more proof, if you needed it, that Sir Alex Ferguson is simply the best when it comes to reshuffling his pack when he is without key players like David Beckham.
Steve Mckenlay, Sunday Mirror

Stuff United
Arsene Wenger last night blew the lid on his relationship with arch-rival Alex Ferguson and confessed what he REALLY thinks about Manchester United. On the eve of two crunch clashes that will make or break Arsenal´s bid for a double Double, the Highbury chief gave a compelling insight into the bitter rivalry between the pair. The Gunners face Sheffield United in this afternoon´s FA Cup semi-final showdown at Old Trafford and then play title rivals United in the Premiership match of the season at Highbury on Wednesday. And in a sensational insight into Wenger´s mind, the Frenchman revealed how: He is STIMULATED by his intense rivalry with United boss Fergie; They now RESPECT each other; He doesn´t ENVY United and insists he has the best squad in the country; He regards only David Beckham ( right) and Paul Scholes as ESSENTIAL to United. Wenger said: " It´s tough having huge games all the time but the rivalry is stimulating. My relationship with their manager adds spice to the occasions.
