-----------------Howard--------------------
G. Neville-Ferdinand-Brown/Sylvestre-Heinze-
Ronaldo--------------------------------Giggs
------------------Rooney--------------------
----------Smith/Saha----Ruud----------------
Fergie: He´s a champ
Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney is the final piece in his Champions League jigsaw. The Manchester United boss has been rebuilding his squad over the past 12 months in a bid to bring Euro glory back to Old Trafford. Now with Rooney, who he describes as the most exciting young player of the last 30 years, Fergie reckons the dream can become a reality. He declared: “I said last year I wanted to start rebuilding Manchester United. We had a fantastic team then but it was with a group of players around 29 to 30 years old and I could not allow the team to get too old. I’m happy with this squad and there’s no reason why we can’t win the Champions League. Nobody wants to win championships more than me. In that sense nothing has changed.”

My minders will protect Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson will rely on the experienced figures in the Manchester United dressing-room to ensure new £30million signing Wayne Rooney stays out of trouble both on and off the pitch. The United boss acknowledged the pressure on Rooney is immense and the spotlight on England´s teenage superstar will burn brighter than ever following his record-breaking move to Old Trafford. " The profile of young players now is phenomenal and Wayne will get the same advice and protection that we give to all our young players," said Fergie. " But the Manchester United dressing-room is the best security there is. Players like Roy Keane, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville are all stable, mature professionals. That´s the best thing of all. Wayne will see these players and how they have grown into what they are today. And I can assure you that´s not by accident. So he´s come to the club that can handle most things."

Rooney: I´ll behave
Sir Alex Ferguson last night warned new £30million signing Wayne Rooney he must keep his nose clean on and off the field if he is to fulfil his potential at Manchester United. But Rooney insisted: " No one has to tell me how to behave because I know that myself." Fergie believes the arrival of the teenage England star can inspire United to reclaim the Premiership and Champions League crowns. But the 18-year-old had to grow up fast at Old Trafford. The United boss said: " When I have to speak to a player about an issue, it is black and white to me. He is either doing the right thing or doing the wrong thing. The pressures on young players these days are huge but we know how to handle them at this club."

Nev: He´s in safe hands
Gary Neville last night told new United team-mate Wayne Rooney that he has come under the wing of the best father-figure in British football. Old Trafford stalwart Neville said: " He´s coming to the right club to be looked after in terms of the management of his football care. He couldn´t be under anybody better than Sir Alex Ferguson to look after him. He has to find his feet after his injury and get used to the new club, the team and the expectation levels at United. At Manchester United there are certain things expected of you on and off the pitch. You have to abide by those rules all the time. But Wayne won´t have a problem with that. I´ve played with him for a year now. He´s a really great lad to have around, enthusiastic and infectious and at 18 years old he´s a fantastic talent."

Ronaldo injury row could give Fergie a hernia
On the day that Wayne Rooney arrived at Old Trafford, Manchester United´s other wonderboy, Cristiano Ronaldo, was locked in a club-versus-country row amid fears he may need a hernia operation. The Portugal winger has aggravated a long-standing groin strain. And Sir Alex Ferguson was so keen to withdraw him from Portugal´s World Cup qualifiers against Latvia and Estonia that he sent Carlos Queiroz and club doctor Mike Stone to Lisbon to plead with Luiz Felipe Scolari to leave Ronaldo out of his side.

Return to the dark ages
Gary Neville has warned England will return to the footballing dark ages if they sack Sven Goran Eriksson. The Swede took over five months after Kevin Keegan led the country to defeat against Germany in the final game played at the old Wembley in October 2000. And Neville said: “Go back to that day at Wembley against Germany and think where we are now in terms of the feeling we have about the squad. It’s a very different feeling and that’s what we should think about. I remember losing that game and Kevin Keegan coming off the pitch. That was a dark day. You would have to say we’ve progressed a lot in the last three years under this manager. It’s unrealistic to think we should sack him and bring in somebody else."

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has labelled the fee Manchester United paid for Wayne Rooney as " exorbitant´´.
The Spaniard, who also revealed he wanted to sign Jonathan Woodgate before the defender´s move to Real Madrid from Newcastle, believes United have paid over the odds for the 18-year-old England striker, who left Everton this week in a deal worth £27m.
" Rooney is a good striker but I have to be sincere and what has been paid for him is exorbitant,´´ he said.
" Manchester have made their decision but at times the market goes over the top.´´
Real Madrid paid Newcastle £13.4m and Benitez, who defended his Spanish acquisitions at Anfield, said it was too expensive to bring the England centre-half to Merseyside.
The former Valencia boss also had concerns over the long-term fitness of the England centre-back.
