Keane wants midfield return

Roy Keane has admitted he is counting the days until he can resume his preferred midfield role.

The Manchester United skipper is covering in defence whilst Rio Ferdinand serves out the rest of his lengthy, ban, Gabriel Heinze competes in the Olympics and Wes Brown recovers from injury.

Keane marshalled the defence in a 2-1 victory over Norwich on Saturday, but prefers a more advanced role.

" I am having to help out at the back at the moment, but I see myself as a midfielder," said Keane.

" It´s a team game and you have to help out in situations like the one we´re in.

" But my best position is in the middle of the park.

" I am not the only one playing out of position at the moment. I think it´s been okay.

" The lads at the back have helped me and so has our goalkeeper, Tim Howard."

Meanwhile, United have been linked with a move for Rio Mavuba.

Mavuba starred in the Toulon Under-20 festival, and has apparently attracted the interest of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Critic-Al acclaim
Six months ago, he would have been the most hated man in Manchester - last night Alan Smith found himself the toast of Old Trafford. He served up a breathtaking strike against Delia Smith´s Norwich to ease Sir Alex Ferguson´s woes - and finally start United´s title challenge. The former Leeds striker worked his socks off on his home debut and scored a sensational volley. But United had to survive a late scare as substitute Paul McVeigh pulled one back for the Canaries.

Al’s spark of genius
Alan Smith followed in the footsteps of Eric Cantona to score a goal the old master would have been proud of. Smith’s transfer from his beloved Leeds still takes some believing and the eyes were being rubbed once more when he grabbed his first Old Trafford goal in show-stopping style. England striker Smith took a ball from Ryan Giggs on his chest, swivelled and sent a fabulous shot in off the far post. If Smith had turned up his shirt collar and scowled arrogantly at the cameras the Cantona moment would have been complete.

Dinamo mutiny
Dinamo Bucharest, who take on United in Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier, were in disarray last night after the players threatened to strike. Team members refused to embark on a five-day trip to prepare for the second leg at Old Trafford and were fined £3,000 each by the club. Furious coach Ioan Andone branded his squad “children”, but the news will come as music to United’s ears.

Why I just had to Die-go
Diego Forlan last night revealed he quit Manchester United because Alex Ferguson told him he no future at Old Trafford. The Uruguayan flop has joined Spanish side Villareal for £2m. Forlan said: “I spoke with Sir Alex and he told me I’d have very few opportunities to play when the injured strikers came back. I told him about the possibility of signing for Villareal and he was very sincere with me and allowed me to go without problems. I’d like to thank him for that.”

Heinze: I’ll be a star
Gabriel Heinze intends to make it impossible for Sir Alex Ferguson to keep him out of the Manchester United first team when he returns from Greece. The £6.9million defender´s call-up to play in the Olympic Games means the left-back slot reserved for the Argentina star is now up for grabs. Fergie is incensed by Heinze´s unavailability and has already warned the new signing his Old Trafford career could be over before it has started. But Heinze is determined to change Ferguson´s mind when he joins up with the squad early next month. He said: " I wanted to go to the Olympics, then give my life for United because of the effort they made to get me and the trust they put in me. It´s up to me to win Sir Alex’s confidence again. I can do it. I have faith that he will believe in me again."

Keane: I fear we won’t win this for another 15 years
Roy Keane last warned his Manchester United team-mates to win back their Premiership crown this season – or risk 15 years in the wilderness. Keane, told fanzine United We Stand: “If things don’t go well for us this year, all of a sudden we could be like Liverpool – 14 or 15 years without winning the championship. I do feel that when one or two players come to United they automatically think they are guaranteed success and they are not.”

Fergie’s keen on ‘Keane’
Man United are on the trail of the new Roy Keane - France´s midfield sensation Rio Mavuba. The Bordeaux kid won his first cap for the full French side last week after just a dozen first-team appearances at club level. And United boss Sir Alec Ferguson sent super spy Martin Ferguson to run the rule over the lad who has Keane´s engine and ability. Mavuba has already attracted an offer from Chelsea, who tried to steal him after he was voted man of the tournament at Toulon´s Under-20 festival. But United could step in - maybe even before the deadline - as they realise that Keane is no longer up to a full season in their engine room.

United Ferget Wayne
Sir Alex Ferguson has been told to forget about signing Wayne Rooney before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month. The Manchester United boss has been told the PLC board will NOT sanction a bid for the England star – for whom Newcastle are set to offer £30million – despite the fact United are close to a £20m jackpot. United face Dinamo Bucharest in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday and if they qualify for the group phase, it will earn them £20m – but they won’t get the cash until the end of the season.

Argy bargy for Fergie
Manchester United new boy Gabriel Heinze vowed last night: “I’m ready to risk my Old Trafford future for the honour of playing for Argentina.” The 25-year-old defender angered United boss Alex Ferguson by answering his country’s call to play at the Olympics in Athens. And now Heinze is threatening to enrage Fergie on a regular basis – by turning out for Argentina at every opportunity. He said: “The decision I have taken is the one I will take every time. Playing for Argentina is something special. I can understand United’s viewpoint but only those who have pulled on an Argentina shirt can understand just how much it means.”
Matthew Owen, News of the World

Keane can’t wait to get his old job back
Roy Keane has warned that he will be back mixing it with his midfield rivals once Manchester United are back to full strength. The Old Trafford captain has been used as a central defender by manager Sir Alex Ferguson this season – sparking rumours that his days as a midfield enforcer are over. But Keane said: “I am having to help out at the back at the moment but I still see myself as a midfielder. It’s a team game and you have to help out in situations like the one we’re in. But my best position is in the middle.”

FERGIE´S KEEN ON ´KEANE´ Aug 22 2004

By Alan Nixon

MAN UNITED are on the trail of the new Roy Keane - France´s midfield sensation Rio Mavuba.

The Bordeaux kid won his first cap for the full French side last week after just a dozen first-team appearances at club level.

And United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sent super spy Martin Ferguson to run the rule over the lad who has Keane´s engine and ability.

Mavuba has already attracted an offer from Chelsea, who tried to steal him after he was voted man of the tournament at Toulon´s Under-20 festival.

But United could step in - maybe even before the deadline - as they realise that Keane is no longer up to a full season in their engine room.

The Old Trafford giants would probably have to go to £8million for the 20-year-old but that could yet be a steal because

Ole operation a success

Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is convinced he will play football again after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.

The hugely popular Old Trafford star, who was the subject of several chants in his honour during Saturday´s win over Norwich City, was under the knife for an hour and a half.

Surgeon Lars Peterson feels it will be a year before his patient is fit enough to play again and there have been suspicions that his top-flight career is over.

However, Solskjaer is determined to fight his way back.

" It will be a lot of hard work further down the line," Solskjaer told NRK. " But the first three to four months will be a test of patience.

" But I will return and play football again.

" He ( Sir Alex Ferguson) wished me well and wanted to welcome me back."

Peterson, who operated on the 31-year-old´s troublesome knee in Gothenborg, admitted the player had a massive role to play if he is to resurrect his career.

" It went well and all the bad gristle has been removed and replaced with new cells," stated Peterson.

" If the training for coming back goes well, and Solskjaer wants it, he will be back in a year."

Meanwhile, Gabriel Heinze was injured during Argentina´s win over Costa Rica in the Olympics.

The United new boy suffered a hip injury and could miss the semi-finals of the competition.

Gill fears late signing flop

Manchester United may not strengthen their squad ahead of the transfer deadline because chief executive David Gill is worried they could sign another lame last-minute flop.

The United man was quizzed by supporters over the prospect of United landing Everton star Wayne Rooney in the wake of Diego Forlan´s departure for Villarreal.

The Uruguayan´s exit has left The Red Devils rather short of options in attack with Alan Smith the only fit forward available to Sir Alex Ferguson and the manager himself has admitted the squad seems a little light with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sidelined for the season.

However, Gill believes Louis Saha and Ruud van Nistelrooy will return to boost the Old Trafford outfit, who are already looking up the table at joint-leaders Arsenal and Chelsea.

" We could go out tomorrow and borrow the money to buy Wayne Rooney for £30 million or £40 million," Gill is quoted as saying. " But it is bad business to end up with long-term debt for a short-term asset such as a player.

" We sat down with the manager in the early part of the summer and he identified Smith and ( Gabriel) Heinze as the two players he wanted in.

" We got them and had a squad of 25 or 26.

" We assumed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would be back at that stage, and that´s why Diego Forlan would be transferred.

" Now Louis Saha will be fit in a week or so and Ruud will be back next month. Plus, of course, we have Paul Scholes to play up there.

" The manager is happy with that situation going into the season.

" But, if the question is whether there is a discussion about certain players we might want, of course there is, and it is a healthy debate.

" But our track record on last-minute purchases is not great.

" We can all name our favourite bad last-minute signing, and we have subsequently had problems getting rid of them."

Forlan thanks Fergie

Diego Forlan has thanked Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for allowing him to leave Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan international signed for Spanish side Villarreal over the weekend after a disappointing spell with The Red Devils.

United sanctioned a significant loss on their £7.5 million outlay for Forlan by accepting Villarreal´s offer for the misfiring front man.

He admits Ferguson advised him to move to Villarreal and is grateful he was allowed to leave the club, despite Alan Smith being the only fit striker available to the manager.

" I must say that I am very thankful to Manchester United because they let me go without any problems at a moment when there are many injured players," said Forlan.

" But I also knew that when they recovered I wasn´t going to have many chances to play."

Forlan will don the number five shirt for Villarreal but acknowledges he will have another battle on his hands to claim a regular starting role.

He added: " Now I know that I have arrived at a team in which I will have to fight for a place.

" I know many of my new team-mates and, most of all, I know that the strikers are very good players so I am going to have to do my best to have a place in the team.

" I know Villarreal very well because in Argentina, Uruguay and England, I saw Spanish football many times.

" I know that I am going to play with the number five on my back but I don´t have any problem with those kind of things."

Brown boost for Man Utd

Wes Brown is ready to return to training with Manchester United for the first time this season.
The 24-year-old England defender is now on the road to recovery after an Achilles tendon injury.

Brown told MUTV: " I had a needle on the injury two weeks ago and ever since it has felt great.

" I started to run from the end of last week and have done some football now. Hopefully I will be back in training at the end of the week."

Brown´s career has been dogged by a succession of injuries that have slowed down his progress.

But he remains optimistic about the future, despite this latest setback.

" The injury happened the first few days into training, " he said. " I carried on thinking it might be because I had not done anything for a few weeks.

" Obviously it was not and we had to do something about it.

" It has not been that long - only a couple of weeks - that is the main thing. But it did my head in a bit."

United have been short of options at the back with Brown sidelined and Rio Ferdinand suspended.

Roy Keane, meanwhile, has spoken of his determination to reclaim his central midfield position with Manchester United.

The United skipper insists that his current position at centre-back is just to help out the club´s selection crisis and is adamant that he will return to midfield as soon as possible.

He said: " Central midfield is my position, it is where I have played all my career and it is where I hope I will play for the rest of my career.

" I have been at the back recently because of all the players missing and I feel I have done okay but my priority is to play in midfield. I will not drop back permanently."

Kenny Cooper has completed his loan move to Academica in Portugal.

The Manchester United youngster has been training with his new club in Coimbra after revealing he had other options regarding a switch away from Old Trafford.

After impressing in the United reserves, the American forward thanked Carlos Queiroz for his part in setting up the temporary transfer.

" It´s a great chance for me," Cooper said at a press conference. " I am desperate to play soccer.

" I am anxious to start scoring goals.

" Therefore, I would like to thank Carlos Queiroz, Alex Ferguson and Antonio Simoes for this chance.

" It´s a new stage for me. In Coimbra, I want to grow as a man and as a player."

Academica´s Simoes is keen to strike up a regular relationship with United in terms of player exchanges and it will be interesting to see how Cooper performs in Portugal.

Fergie Undecided On Rio Return Date

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he may not risk Rio Ferdinand in his first game back after suspension.

Ferdinand will be eligible to play in United´s Premiership clash with Liverpool on Monday 20 September.

But Fergie says a lack of match fitness may prolong the defender´s comeback.

" We will have Rio back on 20 September but it is difficult to say whether I will play him right away," admits the United boss.

" We can´t even play him in any friendly games behind closed doors while he is suspended.

" But his mental state is great. His training has been brilliant, but he can only take part in games against our own players at the moment. We might have to wait."

Figo for Fergie
Alex Ferguson has made a shock £5million move for Real Madrid star Luis Figo. The Manchester United boss believes he can convince winger Figo, 31, to quit the Bernabeu on the cheap and help him reclaim the Premiership title from Arsenal. Fergie sent Old Trafford officials to Spain yesterday to open talks with Figo, who cost Real £37m from Barcelona in 2000. Figo has one year left on his Madrid contract but has already admitted he plans to leave on a free transfer next summer, with Real reluctant to offer a new deal.

Toon will go to £30m
Newcastle will not take no for an answer in their sensational pursuit of Wayne Rooney. As SunSport revealed on Saturday, the Toon have set aside £30million to battle for the Everton teenager’s signature. They have backing from a leading bank to fund the swoop and, though they had a £20m bid rejected last night, will up their offer to £24m within the next 48 hours. They are even prepared to go as high as the full £30m. With Chelsea having dropped out of the Rooney race and Manchester United chiefs appearing hesitant to spend more money, the field looks open for Newcastle. However striker Rooney, 18, who is still nursing the broken bone in his foot suffered at Euro 2004, has set his heart on a move to Manchester.

Gill´s stark warning for United fans
Old Trafford chief executive David Gill admits Manchester United can only compete with Chelsea for players if a wealthy new owner takes over. Gill´s warning to shareholder fans comes as American Malcolm Glazer appears poised to launch a bid to gain control of United after building a 19 per cent stake in the club. Gill told Shareholders United: " Can we compete with the actions Chelsea have taken? Of course we can´t, and if fans want that, we´ll have to go private and maybe have someone who doesn´t care about the fans."

Solskajer´s career ´not over´
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer underwent a career-saving operations on his right knee yesterday and was then told: " You will play again." The Manchester United striker has already been ruled out for the season but Dr Lars Petersson, who carried out the surgery in Gothenburg, assured him that his top-level career is not over yet. Petersson said: " The operation went as planned and took 90 minutes. Things are looking good. Ole will need 10-12 months of physical rehabilitation before he can resume normal football training. He will need a lot of treatment and patience but if he wants to, he will play again."
Richard Tanner, Daily Express

Setback for Sir Alex
Sir Alex Ferguson´s case in his bitter feud with Irish racing millionnaires JP McManus and John Magnier was left with major question marks last night after Michael Owen revealed details of his own offer from the two breeders. Owen revealed details of an offer made to him by them in 1998 which suggests Ferguson may have misread his status as a very junior player in the ownership of ace stallion Rock Of Gilbraltar.
Martin Lipton, Daily Mirror

Roy slams spoilt pros
Manchester United´s Roy Keane has labelled his fellow Premiership pros a spoilt bunch. The outspoken Old Trafford skipper also chided players who are frightened to speak their mind in interviews in case they say the wrong thing. He even mocked the efforts of ex-players as so-called TV pundits for their bland delivery and inane comments. Keane said: “We are all spoilt. We travel in private jets, stay in top hotels and have everything done for us. Players talk about making sacrifices but that’s a joke. It’s the fans who make the sacrifices. We get well paid.”
