Ronaldo And Heinze Could Clash

Heinze Could Face Ronaldo´s Trickery

Heinze and Argentina look set to face Ronaldo and Portugal in the Olympics quarter finals.
Video: Ronaldo´s debut United season
Video: United´s new defensive hard-man

Cristiano Ronaldo could face Gabriel Heinze in the quarter finals of the Olympics this Saturday.

Argentina play Australia in their final Group C game on Tuesday night. But Heinze and co are already guaranteed top spot in the Group, which means they will play the second-placed side in Group D, Portugal´s group.

Portugal are second on three points, trailing Iraq on six. So, if Portugal avoid defeat to Costa Rica on Wednesday but fail to make up their five goal deficit on Iraq, then they will play Argentina.

Should Portugal top Group D then the two could not meet until the final on Saturday 28 August.

If, however, the pair do meet at in the quarter finals, it will be the closest Gabriel Heinze has got to one of his new United team-mates.

The Argentine defender arrived at Old Trafford to sign his contract on 11 June, but has met neither team-mates nor manager in person.

Sir Alex Ferguson recently remarked: " We´ve never seen Heinze, never even met the guy. When he turns up he´ll have a beard."

Heinze has been in impressive form for Argentina, scoring in their opening match, a 6-0 thrashing of Serbia and Montenegro.

Toon get ready to dump £8m Dyer
Kieron Dyer will be kicked out of Newcastle if the club receives an offer of £8million. The England midfielder will be axed after pushing Newcastle and their fans to the limit in a row over where he plays. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is prepared to sell Dyer for the right money because the England star is refusing to back down over his wish to play only in central midfield. Dyer´s situation at St James´s Park will trigger a transfer scramble with Manchester United and Arsenal both interested, although his £50,000-a-week wage may prove a problem.

United chase Silve lining
Mikael Silvestre has warned his Manchester United team-mates they cannot afford many more slip-ups after their opening defeat to Chelsea. Premiership new boys Norwich visit Old Trafford on Saturday and Silvestre claimed United must win to win to keep in touch with Chelsea and champions Arsenal. " That game is going to be very important for us to stay in contention," said Silvestre. We are at home with all our fans and I am sure all the players are going to be up for that one. But we can stay positive and take something from the Chelsea game. We have shown we have the spirit and good movement from all the team and can be confident for the future."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror

Saha eyes comeback
Louis Saha is battling to make a shock return for Manchester United this weekend. There were fears Saha could be out until after Christmas. But now he has told boss Alex Ferguson he is ready to face Norwich at Old Trafford on Saturday. Saha, who has not kicked a ball this season, is desperately needed by Fergie. United lack firepower with only new-boy Alan Smith to carry their attack - and all the problems were highlighted against Chelsea.
Shaun Custis, The Sun

Sir Alex strikes out
Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to take a calculated gamble in the hope that Manchester United will not be forced to play a season-long game up catch-up in the title race. Sources at Old Trafford suggest Ferguson will not be panicked into the transfer market to solve his striker crisis. United, already three points adrift of Arsenal and Chelsea, have to cope with three more Premiership matches before their two main goalscorers, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha, are expected to be fit and flying winger Cristiano Ronaldo is back from Olympic duty.

Depuis quand Beckham sait jouer ?

Levante tell Man Utd´s Forlan: Offer will stay open

Levante have held talks with the brother of Manchester United striker Diego Forlan.
The Primera Liga club were convinced they had signed Forlan a fortnight ago, only for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to block the deal because of an injury crisis.

Levante have informed Forlan, though his brother, that should the situation change, then the door will remain open to him to join them on the original terms agreed.

Sven starts with Smith

Sven Goran Eriksson has confirmed that Alan Smith will start England´s friendly with Ukraine on Wednesday.

The Swede has taken the unusual step of announcing his team line-up in advance of the St James´ Park encounter amid suggestions that ticket sales have not been impressive leading up to the game.

Smith, who joined Manchester United from Leeds United in the summer, plays alongside Michael Owen in a strong side that also includes Tottenham defender Ledley King.

" David James is starting in goal," said Eriksson. " Gary Neville, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Ledley King.

" David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard in midfield. Owen will be up front with Smith.

" Smith is improving match after match. It´ll be interesting to see him and the second half, for sure, we will see Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer, Shaun Wright-Phillips and also I´d like to see Jermain Defoe."

Newcastle new boy Butt will start in midfield but Emile Heskey is out with a hamstring problem.

" Heskey slipped and felt his hamstring so it´s better he is going back to the club and trying to be ready for Saturday," said Eriksson.

" We have enough options. It is only a friendly game. If it had been two qualification games, I don´t think Emile would have gone home.

" I think Butt is our best sitting midfielder. He played very well on Saturday. He is fit again and it´s good to have him. He´s good, has clever positions and plays it very simple.

" The small problem is all four of our midfielders want to play central and we can´t do that, of course, so Gerrard is on the left with David to the right.

" King´s game against France was absolutely incredible. Not a lot of experience but he showed he could handle France in the Euros so I think he deserves to play."

Eriksson refuted the claim that England´s supporters were growing tired of the nation´s team with the prospect of the Tyneside clash with Ukraine being poorly attended.

" I hope when they see the line-up, people will be curious and they like the line-up," he added. " There are a lot of good footballers out there.

" Ukraine are supposed to start with Andrei Shevchenko, one of the best strikers in Europe. He scored the most goals in Italy last season.

" I don´t think the fans are bored of England. Maybe we´re in August, it´s a friendly, but I´m sure we´ll have a lot of support and, when the competitive games take place, all the stadiums will be full wherever we go."

:d) J´allai le dire ^^:

Smith handed England start

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has handed Manchester United striker Alan Smith a place in the starting line-up for the friendly against Ukraine.
The Swede has chosen Smith ahead of Tottenham´s Jermain Defoe, who had been tipped to replace the injured Emile Heskey in Wednesday´s match.

" I hope when the fans see the team they like it and are curious about how we will play," said Eriksson.

Smith Gets England Nod

Alan Smith will start for England against Ukraine at St James´ Park on Wednesday.

Smith plays up front alongside Michael Owen, while United´s Gary Neville takes up the right-back spot in defence.

Eriksson said of his decision to start the United forward: " Owen will play up front with Smith. Smith is improving match after match. It´ll be interesting to see him."

Birmingham City´s Emile Heskey pulled out of the squad due to a hamstring injury, paving the way for Sven-Goran Eriksson to start Smith.

In eight appearances for England, Smith has started only two matches. He has scored once at international level; against Portugal in September 2002.

The £7m summer signing was not part of England´s squad during Euro 2004. His last international appearance came earlier this year, in the 1-0 defeat to Sweden in March.

England starting XI: James; G Neville, Terry, King, A Cole; Beckham, Butt, Lampard, Gerrard; Owen, Smith.

Ronaldo Lights Up Olympics

In Demand: Ronaldo On Olympic Duty

Cristiano Ronaldo continues his Olympic duty on Wednesday having led Portugal to a 2-1 win over Morocco on Sunday.

Ronaldo ran the show and scored in the victory, which means Portugal will reach the quarter finals if they avoid defeat against Costa Rica on Wednesday.

United continue to monitor Ronaldo´s progress very closely. Portugal´s medical staff were requested to prove the 19-year-old´s fitness, according to Portuguese officials.

" He had a scan, not for medical reasons nor for any specific symptoms but because United insisted on it," a Spokesman told BBC Sport last week. " He was considered fit to continue playing for the national team."

Argentina, for whom Gabriel Heinze has impressed so far in Athens, are already guaranteed a place in the Olympic quarter finals at the weekend after beating Tunisia 2-0 on Saturday. They play Australia in their final Group C match on Tuesday.

Ryan Giggs has not been included in Wales squad to face Latvia, while Mikael Silvestre does not make new French coach Raymond Domenech´s squad to take on Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Quinton Fortune, meanwhile, ends a two-year exile from international football in Tunisia. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly wasn´t keen on releasing Fortune for South Africa´s friendly in Tunis on Wednesday.

But coach Stuart Baxter has used the fact that Wednesday is an offical date designated by Fifa for international friendlies to demand that Fortune play. Quinton plays for his country for the first time in two years following a dispute with former coach Ephraim Mashaba.

United have a less-than-usual influence in England´s squad. Only Gary Neville and Alan Smith make Eriksson´s side to face Ukraine at St James´ Park.

Paul Scholes announced his international retirement this month, while Phil Neville is omitted. Former United midfielder Nicky Butt makes Eriksson´s 24.

Darren Fletcher, 20, is the youngest outfield player selected by Berti Vogts for Scotland´s friendly against Hungary at Hampden Park. While Irish trio Roy Keane, Liam Miller and John O´Shea are included for the Republic of Ireland against Bulgaria.

Lawrie Sanchez named his squad to face Switzerland on Monday morning, which included Reds keeper Roy Carroll.

Keane: Injuries Shouldn´t Blunt Our Cutting Edge

Roy Keane refuses to use United´s injury crisis as an excuse for the Reds´ shot-shy opening to the season.
The club captain insists that Sir Alex Ferguson´s side need to be more clinical in front of goal, regardless of which players take to the field.

Keane said: " There´s absolutely no point in talking about them [the injured players]. No disrespect but they are not involved.

" We have a good squad as it is and it gives the young lads maybe a chance, but we are just lacking that final pass and that is the vital one because it is what can create you a goal.

" Hopefully we can work on that this week and take some of the chances next Saturday. We all thought we deserved something on Sunday, but we have to stay positive, there is a full season to go yet.

" We played some decent stuff on Sunday we had plenty of possession in the second half, but we all know its about putting the ball in the back of the net and we just lacked that cutting edge in the final third of the field.

" We didn´t want to be three points behind one of our rivals but that´s the way it goes.

" That´s why next Saturday is important for us. A few of us are away for internationals but we will lick our wounds and we´ll be back."
