Man United season preview
Manchester United invariably talk a good game.
While their leading sponsors might agree it´s good to talk, the time has come for a few people to justify their long-established self-confidence and firm belief that this is a club that always does well in adversity.
Whether it is Sir Alex Ferguson´s assertion that imperious Arsenal did not win the title like true champions, Ryan Giggs still believing United are a better side than the unbeaten Gunners, Roy Keane convinced he is a more effective midfielder than Patrick Vieira or Steven Gerrard, or Diego Forlan ( without a club goal in 2004 save for a tap-in against Northampton Town, and this after he had missed a penalty) declaring he deserves a longer run in the side, there is no doubting the noises coming out of Old Trafford are always positive.
Yet the reality may be markedly different. United were 15 points worse than Arsenal last term and also finished below a Chelsea side that has been fortified considerably by the arrival of a coach who has already got the better of Ferguson when the stakes were high, and the lavish spending of more of their Russian owner´s roubles.
The response was expected to be some pretty spectacular spending of their own but, we are told, Ferguson´s wish list only contained a forward behind Emile Heskey and Darius Vassell in the England pecking order, a free transfer who seems to have constant injury troubles and a rugged Argentinian left back whom the manager, curiously, has not even met yet.
The fighting talk coming out of the camp looked pretty hollow after a poor pre-season campaign ended in a defeat in Cardiff that hinted the gap between United and Arsene Wenger´s charges has, if anything, widened - meaningless friendly or not.
Alan Smith´s form has been a major boon, even if he will still need to do more to win over some of the club´s supporters, but the side´s most entertaining individuals, and arguably best players these days, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy, are missing for the first, crucial month or so.
Gabriel Heinze, like Ronaldo, is on Olympic duty, much to the curmudgeonly Ferguson´s chagrin, and, even aside from the opening date at Chelsea, what seemed like comfortable home wins on paper are now threatening to become thorough examinations of where the ability to break down resolute defences is going to come from.
Giggs probably has less competition for his place than ever, this despite chief executive David Gill stressing the failure to land Arjen Robben would lead to Ferguson ´moving down´ his list of left-sided forward targets. Keane is still a snarling presence but is having to fight to maintain his influence on matches while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is out for the entire season - at least.
Of course, there are plus points - Jonathan Spector proved his potential with some polished displays in his native America, and Chris Eagles looks a United player. But the squad is cluttered with players who, quite frankly, do not look like United players, some of whom toiled against Arsenal´s athletic prowess last Sunday.
There is the sense that United are treading water - waiting for Rio Ferdinand´s return in September, possibly holding fire on any Wayne Rooney bid until the New Year, hoping the current injury crisis will ease.
It is no way to enter a season where they are third favourites at the bookmakers, only three years ago the same side were long odds-on ( 4/5) to win the crown, and, without even stating the obvious that the UEFA Champions League seems an even more outlandish target than last time around, it could transpire that United will do well to match last season´s finish of third place plus a trophy ( the FA Cup) for the cabinet.
The Red Devils relish being written off and some pretty shrewd observers reckon they will claim the title back. Yet now is the time when the talking must stop.

Saha out jusqu’à Noël ?
Fergie rocked as Saha is out ´til 2005
Manchester United fear £12.8million striker Louis Saha could be out until Christmas. Detailed medical scans have revealed that Saha´s medial ligament damage is worse than was first thought and the Frenchman faces up to four months on the sidelines. The revelation is a massive blow to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and explains his move to seek emergency funds from the Old Trafford board to buy a stop-gap striker. Fergie is already without leading striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will be out for up to six weeks after surgery on a hernia problem.

Silvestre: Blues lack spirit
Mikael Silvestre has warned Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich his cash cannot buy the spirit they have at Manchester United. Silvestre and his team-mates travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday for a huge Premiership showdown. Chelsea have spent another £88million on players this summer in a bid to win the title. But Silvestre believes they will be second-best to United who have been there and done it and are desperate to do it again. The United defender said: “Even if you buy top international players, you need a spirit in the dressing room. You don’t get that in one month even if you are living and working together 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have been there before. We all know each other and we have a great spirit and hunger to win this title."

Gill backs Becks sale
Sir Alex Ferguson was right to sell David Beckham to Real Madrid, says Manchester United chief executive David Gill. And Gill believes Cristiano Ronaldo, bought using the England skipper´s transfer cash, is on his way to becoming as big a legend. " The manager made a decision to sell and brought in Ronaldo, who is going from strength to strength."

Ferguson denies Saha blow
Ferguson says Saha will be back in action soon
Sir Alex Ferguson has rejected reports that a knee injury would keep Louis Saha out of action until 2005.
There had been suggestions that the 26-year-old striker´s medial ligament injury would keep him out of Manchester United´s team for at least four months.
Ferguson insisted that Saha would be able to return within three weeks.
" Louis Saha has not had an operation, and has been training terrifically for the last week and doing everything apart from kicking a ball," he said.
Voila une nouvelle rassurante ^^
