Fergie: I need dosh now
Alex Ferguson will ask the Manchester United board for money to save the club´s season. United´s campaign is in danger of collapsing before it has even begun as their injury and availability nightmare worsens by the day. The Old Trafford boss has revealed that Ruud van Nistelrooy´s hernia problem will keep the Dutchman out for six weeks — rather than a month as was first thought. And there are fears Louis Saha could be out with his knee ligament injury for much longer than the three weeks Fergie was told originally by medical staff. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out for the season, Ferguson is left with just Alan Smith and Diego Forlan as main strikers for up to eight games.

Fergie ready to swoop for new striker
Sir Alex Ferguson is set to leap into the transfer market to solve Manchester United´s striker crisis. The United boss arrived in Bucharest for tonight´s Champions League qualifier refusing to rule out a new signing before the transfer deadline at the end of the month. Ferguson has been left with Alan Smith as his only established striker because Diego Forlan is not regarded as reliable enough.

Get me Rooney - Fergie plea as injuries mount up
Manchester United´s injury crisis has pushed Wayne Rooney back to the top of Sir Alex Ferguson´s transfer agenda. United manager Ferguson agreed with his plc board last month that the almost inevitable purchase of Rooney would wait until January at least in order for Everton´s asking price to come down. But with strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha succumbing to pre-season injuries, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ruled out for the season, Ferguson is again considering the possibility of encouraging a move for the 18-year-old before the August 31 transfer deadline.

Fergie: Stop feeling so sorry for yourselves
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his depleted Manchester United squad not to feel sorry for themselves going into tonight´s Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest. Fergie is without nine players - five of whom would make United´s first-team - but the Old Trafford boss has challenged their replacements to prove they are capable of getting the job done. " We are certainly stretched in terms of numbers, but there is no reason for us to feel despondent about the situation," said Fergie.

I´ll Fletch ´n´ carry
Darren Fletcher finished last season with an FA Cup winners´ medal, as captain of Scotland and tipped by Sir Alex Ferguson as the long-term successor to Roy Keane. No wonder the 20-year-old is bristling with determination to help Manchester United come through their worst injury crisis for 20 years - starting tonight. Fletcher has assured Sir Alex Ferguson he is ready for the tricky Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest despite only 40 minutes pre-season action.

Ron´s no crock
Portugal´s football chiefs have hit back at Manchester United claims Cristiano Ronaldo is not fit to compete in the Olympics. United assistant boss and fellow countryman Carlos Queiroz had told a Portuguese newspaper the call-up could make niggling injuries worse. But Portuguese Football Federation doctor Nuno Campos said: " On August 7, Ronaldo underwent a scan because the manager of Manchester United had insisted on it. Given that the medical examination and scan were negative, the player was considered fit to continue playing for the national team."

Time to learn new ABC
George Bush would describe Manchester United´s Premiership match at Chelsea on Sunday as a meeting between the Haves and the Have-mores. United were the world´s richest club until Roman Abramovich began flashing his roubles at Stamford Bridge. Fergie´s men will find it odd facing a team with considerably more money than them. And United will experience something else unusual. Every neutral in the land will be hoping they win, and that Chelsea flop on their big, rich backsides. The surest way of getting people out of their seats used to be to start chanting: " Stand up if you hate Man U." The land was peopled by ABUs - folk who, when asked who they wanted to win the League, would say: " Anyone but United." Now we´ll all be ABCs.

Red-hot: new United shirts for women
If you´re a girl fan of Manchester United, good news - the club has teamed up with Nike to create a new fitted shirt for women. It´s made using Nike´s Distraction Seam technology, so it´s lightweight and water-resistant. Which means you won´t overheat in the sunshine or get soaked to the skin when the rain pelts down.

Eight players - Van Nistelrooy, Saha, Ronaldo, Heinze, Brown, Kleberson, Solskjaer and Ferdinand - are unavailable for the first leg tie in Romania against Dinamo Bucharest.

The 21-man travelling party go into tomorrow night´s Champions League qualifier with Sir Alex presiding over his most hampered start to a season.

" This is the worst start we´ve ever had to a season," Ferguson said at the weekend. " No doubt about that.

" This game on Wednesday is a killer for us and we´re suffering for that in the sense that we haven´t been able to give the players the rest they need.

" It´s got a lot to do with summer football, though it´s not down to the European Championships. You wonder why the Copa America can´t be played at the same time.

" Something should be done about that, but they´ve been talking about the problems for yonks. It seems perfectly simple to me - it clearly isn´t."

Ferguson´s frustrations were compounded by the Olympic call-ups for Gabriel Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ferguson has yet to meet Heinze, one of Argentina´s three permitted " over-age" players. And that meeting may take longer to come to fruition as Sir Alex will be forced to give the pair a rest after the Olympics finish.

" What´s the point of me taking them back?" asked Ferguson. " Really, I´ve just got to tell the boys to have a rest.

" We´ve never seen Heinze, never even met the guy. When he turns up he´ll have a beard."

< << quand tu penses qu´heinze c´est pasencore entraier une seule fois avec son équipe . . On est pas préte de le voir lui . .

Champions League Preview

Manchester United will be hoping to avoid the fate they suffered in Champions League qualifying two years ago when they travel to the Romanian capital.

The Red Devils were beaten 1-0 in the first leg against Zalaegerszegi of Hungary and although they won the return leg 5-0, Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking to avoid such ignoiny this time around.

Ferguson will be without nine first-team players for the match including strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze are at the Olympics while Wes Brown, Liam Miller, Ole Solskjaer and Kleberson are also injured and Rio Ferdinand´s ban continues.

Despite the absentees Fergie should have enough talent at his disposal to beat a Dinamo side that has never beaten English opposition in eight attempts.

Their two previous home European Cup games against English sides both ended in defeat with Aston Villa winning 2-0 in 1982 and Liverpool triumphing 2-1 in 1984.

And Dinamo´s previous two Champions League campaigns ended with preliminary round exits to Polonia Warsaw in 2000 and Club Brugge in 2002 - both sides winning the leg in Romania.

United beat LKS Lodz 2-0 in the first leg of qualifying back in 1998 and there are correct score odds of 5/1 attached to the same scoreline.

Ryan Giggs broke the deadlock in that game six years ago and the Welsh ace, who could partner new signing Alan Smith in attack, is 5/1 to open the scoring once again.

Smith followed up his goal against Celtic on United´s US tour with a stunning effort in Sunday´s 3-1 defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield and the man who scored 14 European goals in just 28 starts for Leeds goes at 9/2 in the same market.
