Fergie assessing striker crisis
Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to close the door on the signing of a new striker before the transfer window closes on August 31.
Manchester United had been expected to try and wait until January before launching any bid for Everton´s Wayne Rooney as the England international is currently recovering from the injury he sustained at Euro 2004.
However, the Old Trafford club have a striking crisis with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha sidelined and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer out for the entire campaign.
Such is the extent of the problem that Ferguson has put the block on any transfer of Diego Forlan to Levante, although quite whether the disappointing Uruguayan is the answer to the difficulties is open to debate.
Rooney´s foot injury may well exclude him from the Scot´s thinking for now, but the situation has changed somewhat for the FA Cup winners recently.
Alan Smith´s arrival from Leeds United has at least provided one solution for United, and he looks set to lead the line against Dinamo Bucharest in the UEFA Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.
Ferguson was asked directly at a press conference if he would sign a replacement for Solskjaer before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
" I can´t answer that one really," he confessed. " I´m not really sure of that.
" At the moment, we are just taking stock of our situation.
" Ruud is a straightforward one, he should be back training certainly in a month and should be back playing in six weeks so we know the timescale there.
" As for Louis, it´s a bit more difficult to assess just when he´s going to get back but we hope three weeks will see him back playing."
Ferguson has a tough decision to make as United have a daunting trip to Chelsea on Sunday and the Old Trafford outfit will not want to be too far off the pace when the transfer window shuts and come Rio Ferdinand´s return in September.
on va surement recruter un nouvel attaquant dès cet été.
Levante retain Forlan hope
Spanish side Levante are refusing to give up hope of signing Diego Forlan despite Manchester United´s insistence he is no longer for sale.
The Primera new-boys claim they had agreed a €3 million deal to sign the Uruguayan hit-man last week, and are hopeful United will honour that agreement.
The Valencia-based outfit are keen to continue their ambitious rebuilding plans, but their hope seems misplaced as all the noises coming from Old Trafford seem to indicate that any deal is now dead.
Sir Alex Ferguson was understood to be ready to cut his losses on Forlan, but that was before he lost Ruud van Nistelrooy for a month to a hernia problem and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for a reported eight months with a knee complaint.
Levante insist they received a fax from Old Trafford last Thursday giving them the green light to try and finalise a deal with Forlan´s agent Daniel Bolotnikoff after a fee was agreed.
The Spaniards claim to be meeting the agent on Wednesday, although Bolotnikoff is unaware of any such plans.
" When quizzed about the meeting, he told AS: " Wednesday? Well, it could be, but nothing has been sorted out."
It now seems almost certain that Forlan will be staying at Old Trafford, until the January transfer window at least, although Levante hope to have further news by Wednesday.

United to make transfer plunge
Speculation is mounting that Manchester United are getting ready to make a late transfer plunge to bridge the gaping hole in their strikeforce.
With leading scorer Ruud van Nistelrooy out for the first month of the season and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer set to miss the whole of the campaign, Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to make an 11th hour bid to bring in new blood.
Everton and England hitman Wayne Rooney would seem the obvious choice, but United could turn their attention elsewhere because of the Goodison Park club´s demands for a £30m-plus fee.
Ferguson is more likely to play a waiting game for the 18-year-old, a make him his main target during either the January transfer window or next summer, with Rooney said to be keen to switch to Old Trafford an demanding a get-out clause in his next contract should he agree to stay on at Everton.
Arsenal´s Sylvain Wiltord is the latest name to be linked with United while in the meantime Ferguson has blocked all transfer talk involving Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.
He was said to be ready to move to Spain last week but instead finds himself favourite to partner new-boy Alan Smith as United begin their competitive season on Wednesday night with a Champions League qualifier in Romania.
" Solskjaer is a miss which is why I´m not inclined to let Diego go," said Ferguson. " There has been a lot of coming and going in the last couple of weeks regarding clubs in Spain trying to get him in on the cheap.
" But nothing has really excited us to let him move so since what has happened to Solskjaer and now van Nistelrooy it means he won´t be going out now."
Un petit Mista ? ^^ Un duo Wright-Phillips-Anelka ? ^^ Wiltord j´y crois pas trop vu son âge, ou alors un contrat assez court...
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Tuesday he is weighing up whether to sign another striker before the transfer window shuts at the end of August.
Ruud van Nistelrooy has a hernia problem and Louis Saha a medial ligament injury and the shortage of strikers has been exacerbated by news that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will miss the rest of the season after a knee operation.
With three of his four first-choice forwards ruled out, the situation is a taxing one for Ferguson ahead of Wednesday night´s Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Bucharest.
Wayne Rooney is the obvious candidate but Ferguson would need to convince the United board they need to buy the £30million-rated Everton striker.
Asked if he was looking to sign a replacement for Solskjaer before the end of August, Ferguson said: " I can´t answer that one really, I´m not really sure of that. At the moment we are just taking stock of our situation.
" Ruud is a straightforward one, he should be back training certainly in a month and should be back playing in six weeks so we know the timescale there.
" As for Louis it´s a bit more difficult to assess just when he´s going to get back but we hope three weeks will see him back playing.
" He´s able to do his preparation work and rehabilitation work at the moment without affecting his injury so when he gets back he should be straight into football training, we are hopeful of that."
The alternative to signing a player such as Rooney is to seek a short-term solution, bringing in a player on loan or a free transfer to help United out of their current predicament. Strikers such as Real Madrid´s Fernando Morientes, who spent last season on loan at Monaco, could come into that category.
Ferguson is without nine first-teamers for the first leg in Bucharest due to injury, suspension or the Olympics and the United boss believes Dynamo will be no pushovers - noting that Steaua Bucharest gave Liverpool a test in the UEFA Cup last season, drawing at home before losing 1-0 at Anfield.
He added: " It´s not a great situation to be in for us - obviously it would be preferable to have all your players but from time to time during the season you are always going to have players injured and we are in a bad spell at the moment.
" Of course it would be preferable not to be in the Champions League qualifying stage but it has happened in the past, two years ago, and in fact when we won the competition in 1999.
" We have got experienced players with us, the Community Shield game on Sunday will have brought them on but Dinamo will be difficult opposition - they are a decent team.
" My experience of Romanian football goes back to my Aberdeen days and it has always been healthy. Steaua Bucharest had a good performance last year against Liverpool and if you take that as a barometer it should be a good game."
Romanian double winners Dynamo have two players suspended - goalkeeper Cristian Munteanu, who was sent off for handball against Slovakian champions MSK Zilina in the second qualifying round, and Ionut Badea who will miss both legs.
Ionel Danciulescu is the dangerman in Ioan Andone´s side - he scored both goals in the 2-0 aggregate victory over Zilina and was also the top marksman in the country last season with 21 goals.
Meanwhile, Ferguson backed Solskjaer to overcome the knee injury which has threatened to end the Norwegian forward´s career.
Solskjaer has had an operation on the same knee problem which saw him miss most of last season and Ferguson said: " He has got a two-year contract and is only 31 and he has a determination that will hopefully help him.
" It is not an easy situation for the lad, it´s a blow and it is something we had feared. He had to go and see a specialist and he had to have surgery but hopefully now he´ll get a good rehabilitation."
Solskjaer, the player who came off the bench to score the winner in United´s 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich, has come back from injury problems at other times in his career.
Ferguson added: " He has had one or two injuries in the past but he overcame those and I am sure he will do so again. He is mentally strong, that´s a great advantage."

Peut-être un joueur libre ( Wiltord ? ) ou prêté donc ( Tristan ? )...
