Rio return vital for Reds - Moran
MANCHESTER United legend Kevin Moran thinks the return of Rio Ferdinand will be crucial to the Red Devils hopes of landing some major silverware next season.
Ferdinand´s eight-month suspension for a missed drugs test runs out on September 20, the same day as United face Liverpool in the Premiership.
Sir Alex Ferguson has already highlighted the loss of his record signing in the middle of last season as one of the major reasons for United´s subsequent demise.
And Moran, who famously became the first man to be sent off in an FA Cup final when United defeated Everton in 1985, does not think Ferdinand´s return can come soon enough.
" United missed Rio pretty badly towards the end of the season," said the former Republic of Ireland international.
" It´s sad really because five or six weeks before his ban started he had just started playing the best football of his time at United.
Adjustment
" I don´t think anyone doubted his talent but, like many others before him, it took him a while to adjust to the size of the club which often happens.
" There are scores of excellent players who have come to United and struggled but Rio looked like he was just getting to grips with the situation when he was suspended.
" United need him to recapture that form when he comes back because even though they won the FA Cup, I´m sure Sir Alex Ferguson will be looking for a big improvement in the major competitions."
Moran was at Old Trafford last night to watch Mikael Silvestre score the only goal as United defeated PSV Eindhoven in the inaugural Vodafone Cup.
Now, 48, the Dublin-born defender is intrigued as to how Ferguson will fit new crowd favourite Alan Smith into his team.
Moran is a big fan of the former Leeds player and feels Smith´s aggression will be vital as the Red Devils look to reclaim their title.
Robust
He expects a far more robust challenge than Ferguson´s men put up last season but when pressed, it is Chelsea who the Irishman reckons could be lifting the championship next May.
" Smith is going to be a big success for Manchester United and I can´t wait to see how Sir Alex will look to get him into the team," he said.
" I´m sure he will help United improve but whether it´s enough for them to win the league or not I´m unsure because the other clubs have improved as well.
" Chelsea will be an even bigger threat than they were last year - and then they finished second and reached the semi-final of the Champions League, so I´m expecting really big things of them."

Foot - ANG : Van Nistelrooy out un mois

Premier Cup Final, at Old Trafford
Manchester United´s Under-15´s lost in the Premier Cup Final at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
The Reds took on Manchester rivals City, a physically stronger team compared to United´s perhaps more subtley-talented youngsters, but lost 1-0 with a headed goal from a set-piece.
United had done remarkably well to reach the final considering they had such a young squad for the tournament.
Busby Babe and former United manager Wilf McGuinness was delighted with the Reds performances throughout the tournament.
Wilf told ManUtd.com: " They´ve did marvellously well to get to the final. Our players were by no means the biggest in the tournament, but they got to the final by playing good football. They can be proud of themselves."

Paul´s double dosh
Paul Scholes is close to agreeing a new four-year contract worth £18million at Manchester United. Scholes, 29, has two years left on his current agreement. And Old Trafford chiefs are keen to secure his signature on a deal to take him through the best years of his career. That is what boss Alex Ferguson believes he will see from Scholes over the next four years. This week the midfielder decided to end his international career with England for family reasons. Scholes? new deal will see him almost double his wages from £50,000 a week to £90,000 a week.
Neil Custis, The Sun
Let´s get it on
Roy Keane has vowed to make amends for Manchester United´s disastrous form last season in what could prove to be the Old Trafford skipper´s last year at the club. " We didn´t do ourselves justice last season and we want to put that right," said Keane. " We know we didn´t produce the goods but after any setback this club always responds well. Every pre-season you come back aiming to improve, and we know we have to improve on last season. I´m excited by the challenge ahead and I know the other players feel the same."
David McDonnell, Daily Mirror
Rooney will stay on until United bid big
Wayne Rooney is on the verge of committing his immediate future to Everton - but wants an escape clause inserted in his proposed new five-year contract. After stalling on Everton´s record-breaking offer of £50,000 a week over five years, Rooney has finally let it be known he is ready to accept their terms, provided the clause is written into the deal. The only remaining stumbling block is likely to concern the amount stipulated to activate his departure, with Everton certain to push for around £30million and Rooney´s representatives holding out for nearer £20million.

Fergie demands Euro progress
Sir Alex Ferguson has set Manchester United the task of improving their record in Europe this season. " The Premiership is hugely important to us," he said. " But you can´t put it above the Champions League - not for this club. Our performances in the competition have been good over the years but there is a difference between doing well and winning it. And with the players we have had, twice is not good enough for this club."

Kezman has been given a three-match suspension, but the ban will not come into effect until August 17 leaving him available for the opener with Manchester United on August 15.
BOCA TAKE CUP AFTER POSTPONEMENT
Boca Juniors lifted The Vodafone Cup after Manchester United´s clash with Urawa Red Diamonds was postponed on Thursday evening.
The Argentine giants had earlier sealed a 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven, but their game was also abandoned with ten minutes remaining due to torrential rain and outbreaks of lightening.
The win for Boca meant they kept their 100 percent record in the tournament.
The game was a competitive affair which was decided by one goal which came from Mauro Boselli.
Former Middlesbrough midfielder Carlos Marinelli was the star turn as he created the goal and many other chances besides.
Swiss youngster Johann Vonlathen and new signing DaMarcus Beasley tried their best to bring their side level with numerous good runs, but it was not to be as Boca held firm.
Boca finished the tournament with 12 points, meaning United would have had to have won by five goals to level them.
Referee Andy D´Urso took the decision to call off United´s match after consulting the Met Office over the weather forecast.

Rooney set for new deal
Wayne Rooney is understood to be close to agreeing a new five-year contract worth £50,000-a-week at Everton.
But it is understood the deal for England´s 18-year-old superstar would have an escape clause inserted.
Manchester United have cooled their interest in Rooney, claiming he is over-priced at about £30m.
Reports suggest he is now ready to sign the contract, with an escape clause likely to centre on him being able to talk to clubs offering £25m.
