Sir Alex Ferguson has added a teenage German goalkeeper to his cosmopolitan football academy as he plots the future of Manchester United.
Ron-Robert Zieler may only be 15 but he has shown enough in this week´s 20-team Nike Cup to encourage Ferguson to offer him a three-year contract.
Zieler will move from FC Cologne in July once his school studies are complete, reinforcing a youth development programme that has seen the notable arrivals of Gerald Pique from Barcelona and Giuseppe Rossi from Serie A outfit Parma.
None of the teenage trio are likely to be ready for first-team duty for a while yet, but with FA restrictions preventing the Red Devils from recruiting any young English player who lives more than 90 minutes´ drive from Old Trafford, Ferguson has decided to adopt a global strategy to keep his club at the top.
" What we are trying to do is bring the best young players we can identify to this club no matter where they are in the world," said Ferguson.
" There is a continuous drive to be in front of everybody else, which is not easy.
" Ron-Robert is a young boy we identified last year and fortunately we have managed to come to an arrangement with Cologne which means he will join us in July when he leaves school.
" It is very difficult to assess young goalkeepers but at the moment he looks like a player of exceptional quality.
" He is very tall for such a young lad, so height is not going to be a problem for him and he does look like a very exciting prospect."

Smith Praises Squad´s Hunger For Success
Alan Smith says he is itching to help United reclaim the Premiership title.
The £7million striker has impressed in all his pre-season appearances for United, and says he wants to be an integral part of a hungry United side.
He said: " Their pride was hurt last year and since I have come here I´ve noticed how hungry the players are to do well," he said. " That is the biggest thing I have found.
" There are players here who have won eight championship medals and they still want to go out and win more which is all credit to them, and why they have done so well over the years. I am here now and I want to be a part of it.
" We are all champing at the bit to get the Premiership title back."
Smith made his first substitute appearance for the Reds in the 1-0 Vodafone Cup win over PSV Eindhoven, a cameo he sees as a bonus after playing every minute of United´s USA tour.
" When you sign for a club like this it is important that you get out there and play football. I played three 90-minute games in America so this was an added bonus," he said.
" The gaffer wanted to try a few of the lads who had been on international duty, to get their fitness back so Louis, Ruud and Diego played up there first but it was an added bonus for me to get on.
" I´ve settled in great. The lads have all been good to me and I think going to America to start off with was the perfect opportunity to get to know all the lads and I was just happy to get out there and perform in a United shirt in front of the home fans."

FORLAN DETERMINED TO STAY
Diego Forlan says that he is determined to stay at Manchester United and prove himself despite the continued speculation linking him with a loan move away from Old Trafford.
The Uruguayan striker was first thought to be heading to Atletico Madrid, before Spanish rivals Levante claimed they had already agreed on a deal with Sir Alex Ferguson´s side.
The Red Devils boss insisted this was not the case, but Forlan still seems to be on his way out at some stage this summer.
The £7 million signing from Independiente has Ruud van Nistelrooy, Louis Saha and Alan Smith standing in his way of first team action at United.
Despite all the talk of the 25-year-old moving on, he insists he is still focused on becoming a fixture in United´s side.
" I read things or hear what people are saying but that doesn´t mean it is true," said Forlan.
" I am still here and I have two years left on my contract. I am a Manchester United player and I am happy to be here.
" Only one person will decide if I am going to leave or not and that is the manager. When he comes and tells me I have to go, I know I will be going. Until then I won´t even think about it."
Forlan famously took 26 games to open his account for United, but he insists that he needs regular action to show his best.
" I get better when I play quite a few games on the trot.
" Playing once in a while is not the same as playing every game.
" When I was at Independiente, I was playing in every match and that builds your confidence."
SMITH WANTS TO START WITH SHIELD WIN
Manchester United new boy Alan Smith is determined to win his first professional medal against Arsenal in Sunday´s Community Shield.
Smith is anxious to immediately hit the silverware trail following his summer move from Leeds United.
The England international endured a success-starved career at Elland Road and travelled across the Pennines in search of trophies.
His first opportunity presents itself at The Millennium Stadium at the weekend when the FA Cup winners tackle the Premiership champions.
Though there are murmurings that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will field an under-strength side due to next week´s UEFA Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Bucharest, Smith is keen to play.
He is looking to vanquish Arsenal in Cardiff and is hoping it will serve as a prelude to further medals later in the season.
" I´m looking forward to the Community Shield," said Smith.
" I´ve not won anything as a footballer, not since I was a kid, so Sunday is a chance for me to put that right.
" Coming to a team where people who have won championship after championship and trophies, and yet they still want more, that´s a credit to them.
" But they want to win the Premiership title so badly this year and I want to win it too."
Un ptit triplé de Smith et on l´aura ce Community Shield ^^
ça nous permettra de bien commencer l´année. ^^

Ptit article sur Scholes:
His wife is pregnant with their third child, and this is apparently the reason that Paul Scholes called time on his England career.
The Telegraph reports:
‘The key reason behind Paul Scholes´ surprise decision to retire from international football is that his wife Claire is pregnant with the couple´s third child. This has caused the Manchester United midfielder to re-evaluate his life.
‘The 29-year-old already has two young children, Aaron and Alicia, but the impending arrival of a third, due in December, is believed to have prompted him into deciding that the time spent away from his home near Oldham would be too much of a sacrifice.
‘Scholes had already made up his mind before Euro 2004 that the tournament in Portugal would be his last campaign after first discussing the possibility of international retirement with his manager Sir Alex Ferguson more than a year ago.
‘Ferguson confirmed that the player had no long-term injury problems, although last season was one of his worst in that regard. He missed the whole of September with hernia
problems and all of November following an operation on his groin.’ *
Pour terminer un bel hommage de l´Independent:
‘There was no valedictory press conference, no staged last hurrah in which he waved farewell to all four corners of the stadium, no emotional hug goodbye for the cameras. That has never been Paul Scholes´ style. The end of his international career was instead signalled by a short statement on Manchester United´s website yesterday afternoon. By the time it appeared he was probably at home, playing with his children, deliberately deaf to the eulogies which began flowing as soon as word got out.
‘Scholes, 29, has gone at a time and manner of his choosing, a feat few players achieve. Most observers will regard his departure from the international scene as premature. He made a big contribution to England qualifying for Portugal and would have been expected to do the same as the team attempt to secure a place in Germany.
‘The recent focus on his lack of international goals obscured Scholes´ real talents. A beautiful passer, long or short, with an eye for the incisive, unexpected pass, he makes his team-mates look good. Scholes is one of those players opponents always talk highly of.
‘Scholes has never been a great tackler. That is one of the reasons why he, not Steven Gerrard, was the player shunted to the left in Euro 2004 when Eriksson decided he had to accommodate Frank Lampard. Ironically it was from the left flank that he broke his scoring drought against Croatia but he made it clear he was unhappy on the margins. Sadly it was equally evident that he was struggling to play back-to-back matches in the heat.
‘That experience may have been a factor in his decision but no one should doubt the overriding reason was a desire to spend more time with his family. Scholes has remained true to his roots, taking his son, Aaron, to watch Oldham just as his own father took him. He maintains a low profile, preferring to spend his free time with his wife Claire, who he has known from school, and his children Aaron and Alicia, rather than the golf course or the nightclub.’
maintenant ça va etre difficile d´avoir le ballon d´or pour scholes...
il l´aurait jamais eu . .
faut etre bresilien pour ca ou super flashy . .
mais si MU fait le triplé cette année pourquoi pas ? ?,
Ca parait dur pour lui vu qu´il fuit toute médiatisation ^^
