Fergie: No Levante Switch For Forlan
Sir Alex Ferguson has denied reports in the Spanish press that Diego Forlan is poised to make a loan move to newly-promoted La Liga side Levante.
Forlan´s future at Old Trafford has come under the microscope this summer after Ferguson signed Louis Saha in January and Alan Smith early in the close-season.
Levante have indicated Forlan is La Liga bound. But the Uruguayan striker, who played in United´s friendly win over PSV on Tuesday night, is going nowhere according to Ferguson.
" I´m sure they are interested but they will not be getting him," he said in a post-match press conference.
Sir Alex Ferguson said recently that he was glad to return to having four strikers in his squad; naming Ruud van Nistelrooy, Louis Saha, Alan Smith and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his favoured four.
However, with Solskjaer out for up to three months, Forlan could now make up the four forwards Ferguson wants for the new season.
Kicked in the Pauls
Paul Scholes dealt a hammer blow to Sven Goran Eriksson by quitting international football. The Manchester United midfielder dropped the bombshell last night - just 48 hours before the FA vote on Eriksson´s future as England boss. Scholes, 29, had been agonising all summer about his England future. But the Svengate scandal is understood to have made up his mind. Scholes said: " This is a decision I have not taken lightly. I have been considering retiring from international football for a while now."

Paul´s last Port of call
Paul Scholes told Sven Goran Eriksson he was finished with international football right after his humiliation against Portugal. Scholes, once considered England´s most influential player, had been hauled off just 12 minutes into the second half of the Euro 2004 quarter-final. Already being played out of position on the left flank to accommodate both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, this was the final straw. It was another example of Eriksson´s negative tactics. Scholes´ Manchester United team-mate Phil Neville came on to play a defensive midfield role as the Swede chose - unsuccessfully - to try to sit on a 1-0 lead.

A quiet man off the pitch but a great player on it
He was England´s reluctant hero, a painfully shy player who was happy to let others bask in the limelight while he simply got on with the job of playing football. But Paul Scholes was unquestionably one of the most influential England players of his generation, a fact which makes his premature retirement from the international scene all the more baffling. Scholes played under five England managers - and he was the first name on the teamsheet for all of them. Sir Alex Ferguson recently hailed his Manchester United midfielder as " the best player in Britain" and England boss Sven Goran Eriksson described him as " unique".

George: He really was the best
George Best believes England have lost their most influential star in Paul Scholes. The Manchester United legend has watched Scholes develop at Old Trafford and said: " England have lost their best player because he was the most gifted and consistent player this country has produced in a long while."

United strike pair give Fergie Euro boost
Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha showed Sir Alex Ferguson they will be ready to take part in next week´s Champions League qualifier with promising performances in Manchester United´s 1-0 Vodafone Cup win over PSV last night. With neither player having kicked a ball since Euro 2004, United manager Ferguson was understandably anxious over their fitness.

Smith is Al right as Reds take Mik
Any fears Alan Smith had about not being accepted by Manchester United fans were dispelled last night as he made his Old Trafford debut. Booed every time he played for Leeds at the Theatre of Dreams, United´s £7million signing received a rapturous welcome from the 29,479 fans to end any notion of hostility following his move across the Pennines. Smith may not have scored, but he continued his impressive pre-season form which proved the wisdom of Sir Alex Ferguson´s investment. United took the lead in the 28th minute, Mikael Silvestre powering in a header from a Ryan Giggs corner.

FERGIE PLAYS DOWN FORLAN EXIT
Diego Forlan is set to stay at Manchester United after manager Sir Alex Ferguson stated Levante will not be getting their hands on the Uruguayan international striker.
The Liga outfit were tipped to claim the South American´s signature on Tuesday, but following The Red Devils´ 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven Ferguson quashed the talk.
It was thought Levante had agreed a deal with United to bring in Forlan, with only personal terms needing to be agreed before a move could be pushed through.
However, Ferguson recognises that interest is building in his striker, who has flattered to deceive during his time at Old Trafford, but that he is remaining with United.
" I´m sure they are interested but they will not be getting him," explained Ferguson.
Forlan played in United´s 1-0 friendly win over PSV, but did not get on the scoresheet as Mikael Silvestre´s first half header clinched the tie for Ferguson´s men.

Scholes has always been Fergie favourite
When Sir Alex Ferguson decided to break up his long-standing midfield tandem of Paul Scholes and David Beckham last summer, it was quite telling which player made for the exit.
Both men were established internationals, considered as two of four world-class individuals in the England squad by Sven-Goran Eriksson. Beckham had even been the Swede´s captain for the last three years.
Yet Beckham was the man who left Old Trafford, joining Real Madrid for £25million. His off-field pursuits were believed to be causing Ferguson concern and the Scot could not afford for any one player to become bigger than the club.
Scholes, on the other hand, could not be more private or more single-minded about his football, character traits which have always delighted Ferguson. Now the flame-haired star has surprisingly quit the national team to focus solely on United.
That means there will not even be the interruption of national team call-ups to his routine of training, eating, sleeping, spending time with his wife and family and sometimes watching League One side Oldham.
Adored
In short, he is adored by Ferguson for being everything Beckham isn´t - quiet, uncontroversial and intensely uncomfortable with any media attention.
Among his Premiership peers, the Manchester United star is the best in the business at arriving in the box unannounced and wreaking maximum devastation.
He scored a career-best 20 goals in season 2002-03 and would have come close to equalling that feat last term had it not been for the groin operation which sidelined him for six weeks earlier in the campaign.
Which is why it must have grated with him that for England, Paul Scholes couldn´t score goals - for three years.
It´s an amazing statistic for a player so prolific at club level, and the close-range header against Croatia at Euro 2004 which finally ended the run - his 14th England goal - will now be his last barring any change of heart.
" Every time I meet up with England I get told how long it is since I scored," he said prior to the tournament in Portugal.
" I haven´t really had many chances but that is my fault as much as anyone else´s. I should have scored a couple in the final qualifying game against Turkey but I don´t have any excuses for not scoring for so long."
One factor in the drought could have been the more direct style Eriksson uses compared to the more fluid game of United which seems to suit Scholes so well. Not that the Oldham-born star had a particularly happy time of it at Old Trafford last season either.
United fans were deeply critical of Ferguson for shunting Scholes around his line-up, at times nominating him on the right side of midfield, on other times the left, as well as just behind Ruud van Nistelrooy, a role he took some time to adjust to but finally appeared to get the hang of last season.
Scholes´ many backers claim when you have a player of such ability at your disposal, it would make more sense to build a team round him rather than just try to fit him in and there is little doubt United look a far more effective attacking force when he occupies a central role.
Ferguson now has exclusive rights to Scholes´ talent and unlike Beckham, the United boss won´t be letting go.
GERMAN KEEPER FOR UNITED
Manchester United are signing Cologne youngster Ron-Robert Zieler on a three-year contract.
The 15-year-old keeper impressed Old Trafford officials with his performances in a youth tournament in Manchester and is due to link up with his new club next July.
The Premier Cup displays caught the eye and Zieler has done enough to clinch a dream move to the Premiership giants.
His father Raimunt Zieler confirmed the news to local Cologne newspaper Express.
" Despite this gigantic opportunity, Ron-Robert is quiet and remains calm," Zieler Senior told the German publication.
" In sporting terms he gives his best, but he is hardly talking about the subject, he is entirely focused on finishing school."
Sir Alex Ferguson is continuing his worldwide mission to bring some exciting young talent to United.
