The Times:
‘Manchester United will wait until the January transfer window before launching an offer to buy Wayne Rooney. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, and the Old Trafford board are extremely confident that the Everton forward will become a United player in the long term, but they have signalled their belief that the price will drop to below £30 million as the Merseyside club grow anxious about the 18-year-old’s reluctance to sign a new contract.
‘United always felt that the £50 million valuation cited by Everton after Rooney’s heroics for England in the European Championship finals was absurd and see the price dropping to around half that. Having been encouraged by noises coming from the player’s advisers, United are confident they are the only realistic buyers and are happy to wait until January, or even next summer, to sign him.’

FOOTBALL: SIR ALEX REFUSES TO ROOL OUT BID

SIR ALEX FERGUSON and Old Trafford money man David Gill joined forces last night to keep the door wide open for Wayne Rooney´s switch from Everton to Manchester United.
Quizzed on whether United´s summer spending is over, Old Trafford boss Ferguson refused to rule out a move for England´s £30million-rated wonder kid before the transfer window closes later this month.
" You just never know, you really never know who you´ll walk into on a busy street," said Ferguson, a known admirer of the young England striker.
The United boss has privately admitted he wants teenager Rooney to add to his galaxy of stars - and it´s also clear United chief executive Gill has NOT dismissed the notion of the Everton youngster joining new signings Alan Smith, Gabriel Heinz and Liam Miller.United are stalking Rooney, and Gill said: " I can understand why we´re constantly being linked with him because he´s an exceptional young player and he´s English. But we like a lot of young players in England.
" At the moment we´re concentrating on preparations for the season. This time last year Louis Saha wasn´t on the agenda but as we moved through the season it became clear we needed to strengthen that particular position and he became available."
As news broke of Rooney´s representatives rejecting the chance to renew their executive box at Goodison Park - from where Rooney´s friends and family often watch his starring displays - Gill issued a warning to Everton, who want a gigantic fee before parting with the prize asset.
" Talk of £30m to £50m for one player is just not on for us because as well as the fee you´ve got to write in the player costs and then the salary," he said.
" One of the great strengths of United since it was floated is that it has been run sensibly from a financial perspective. Our intention is that no more than 50 per cent of turnover should go on wages."

Manchester United supremo David Gill has warned their main Premiership rivals they can and will compete with them in the transfer market.
In a thinly-veiled reference to money-bags Chelsea and the £90m the Londoners have spent in the close season, chief executive Gill was defiant.
Although Gill discounted any move for Wayne Rooney at the reported £30m-plus price tag, he insisted United had the financial muscle to compete for the best players.
Gill told Radio 5 Live´s Sportsweek programme: " We may not be top kings any more but we are nearly there when it comes to money. If you look at it, we can compete aggressively and sensibly in the transfer market and will continue to do so.
" We will continue to invest heavily in the squad. We have spent £14m in the close season, and roughly £12m on Louis Saha in January. We are investing in the squad and we should not be throwing our hands up in horror and saying we cannot compete.
" We can compete, we are a very profitable company and a very well supported club. That means we have the financial assets to compete in the transfer market. Anyone who thinks we can´t should watch this space!"
United are on their way back from the USA after their tour ended with a 1-1 draw with AC Milan, and they are again being linked with Everton´s England striker Rooney.
But Gill claims they are not about to snap up the 18-year-old star.
He said: " You look at prices being mentioned as to being £30m to £50m, and that is way off the mark.
" We do not comment on transfers but on this occasion I can say that there has been no direct contact."
< <<< en gros gill dit que MU peut concurencer n´importe qui sur le marche des transferts et previent chelsea et le real de ne pas trop se rejouir , on est sur rooney et il y a pas mal de chance qu´ils viennet . ..

Manchester United striker Diego Forlan is set for a loan move to Marseille
< << on serait soit disant sur mista . .

" Fergie on Rio"
Good to hear.
" Rio has been brilliant throughout the whole ordeal and shown a strength of character that´s been simply phenomenal."
" The way Rio has handled everything has taken me by surprise really, because you never know how someone is going to react to that kind of situation," he added.
" There´s almost a comparison with how Eric Cantona handled his six-month ban a few years ago in the way Rio has trained with such devotion and dedication.
" I have to say I have never been more impressed with any player facing a long absence from the game like that. From the minute he was suspended, he seemed to put it right out of his mind and concentrate on one thing and one thing only - proving himself.
" He has been absolutely phenomenal in training, absolutely brilliant and that has pleased me so much.
" In the six months so far, he has only missed about four days´ training - that´s amazing.
" He hasn´t once asked for a day off and, apart from when the club gave him a week off in April to take his family to Mauritius, he´s been at the training ground with the rest of the lads, joining in with everything as normal.
" That shows a special type of courage and character, and I am looking forward to being able to put his name on the team sheet again."
c´est vraiment giggs qui m´a inquieter . .
on a l´impression qu´il etait cuit qu´il n´avait plus de jambes . .
peut etre la pre saison
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson should be spoilt for choice up front in the Vodafone Cup on Tuesday.
Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to face his former side PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford as is Louis Saha.
Both stayed behind to work on their fitness while United were away on a three-game 10-day tour of the United States.
And in their absence £7m buy Alan Smith staked a claim for regular start with a string of impressive displays.
While van Nistelrooy and Saha have been pencilled in for the start of the tournament, Darren Fletcher and Quinton Fortune are likely to face Urawa Red Diamonds on Thursday.
Ferguson said: " The thing uppermost in my mind is how van Nistelrooy, Saha, Fletcher and Fortune are.
" If they have trained at the right levels, then they will play.
" I´m quite sure about van Nistelrooy and Saha for tomorrow and Thursday.
" Fletcher may play on Thursday as well as Quinton Fortune."
Ferguson was delighted with the way Smith bedded in with the rest of the squad.
" Alan Smith is new to the club. He has been 10 days away with the team and shown the type of player he is, the qualities he has got.
" So that is a bonus for us. I think most people who have seen our games in America would recognise we have a fine talent there.
" He plays with great heart and never stops moving. He is a busy centre forward and I think he will do well.
" The more he plays with the other players, the more understanding he will get."
United wrapped the tour by going down 9-8 on penalties to AC Milan after being only seven seconds away from achieving victory.
Andriy Shevchenko equalised to take the game into a penalty shoot-out after Paul Scholes had put United ahead.
But goalkeeper Tim Howard missed his spot kick to hand the Italians an unlikely victory.
The defeat came on the back of losses to Bayern Munich, also on penalties, and Celtic.
Ferguson, however, would swap pre-season success for a safe passage in Europe as his side look ahead to a Champions League qualifier first leg against either MSK Zilina or Dynamo Bucharest on 11 August.
" You would like to win pre-season friendlies but the important thing is to get to 11 August and to get my best 11 players to take us hopefully into the next stage of European football," he said.
" You have to look at the long view and it is about bringing players on gradually.
" The important thing is to come away with something from a game.
" Wes Brown, Mikael Silvestre, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs got back into the fray and that was a bonus for me.
" Milan had good experience about them and it was a decent game.
" We are not unhappy with the result. Considering the heat and the dry pitch, we still managed to control the game."
United made the breakthrough in the 33rd minute following a mistake by Alessandro Nesta.
He directed a cross from David Bellion straight into the path of Scholes.
It was a gilt-edged chance for the midfielder, who scored 12 goals last season, and he wasted no time in rattling a shot beyond Nelson Dida.
United dictated the pace of the game until Shevchenko´s late, late equaliser which took the game into penalty kicks, which stretched over 17 minutes.
Howard handed the game to Milan when his spot-kick came back off the post but Ferguson was in no mood to criticise his goalkeeper.
Ferguson joked: " Thank God Tim missed because Carlo Ancelotti ( Milan coach) and I were next.
" You have to say the quality of penalties was absolutely fantastic. There was only one direct save and the whole thing took 17 minutes.
" I didn´t say anything to Tim at the end of the match. I thought he played well and had a good game."
pour giggs ça doit pas etre si inquiétant que ça puisque fergie ne cherche pas à le remplacer.
No-go Diego
Diego Forlan has begged Alex Ferguson to give him one more chance at Manchester United. The club will listen to offers for the striker, who cost £7million in January, 2002. United would accept £2.5m after an inconsistent two-and-a-half years. But the Uruguayan international is determined not to leave and believes he can still offer Ferguson something in his bid to retain the Premiership. Forlan, 25, said: ? I definitely do not want to leave Manchester United. I am aware of all the speculation about my future. But nobody at the club has yet to come up to me and tell me I?m being sold and I don?t want to be sold. I still believe I can do a good job for this club.?

GILL RESPONDS TO DOUBTERS
Manchester United chief executive David Gill believes the club can still compete with Chelsea in the transfer market and has urged any doubters to ´watch this space´.
After the signings of Alan Smith, Liam Miller and Gabriel Heinze, some commentators have suggested the days of United being big players in the transfer market are over.
A much-anticipated move for Wayne Rooney has failed to materialise, and Gill has once again accepted any valuation from Everton would be beyond the self-proclaimed biggest club in the world´s means.
" You look at prices being mentioned as to being £30 million to £50 million and that is way off the mark," he told The Express.
" We do not comment on transfers but, on this occasion, I can say that there has been no direct contact.
" We may not be top kings any more but we are nearly there when it comes to money.
" If you look at it, we can compete aggressively and sensibly in the transfer market and will continue to do so.
" We will continue to invest heavily in the squad.
" We can compete. We are a very profitable company and a very well-supported club. That means we have the financial assets to compete in the transfer market.
" Anyone who thinks we can´t should watch this space."
That comment will spark more tabloid speculation regarding any future bids from United, but Sir Alex Ferguson seems happy to stick with his squad despite losing Cristiano Ronaldo and one of his three senior summer arrivals, Heinze, to the Olympics.
FORLAN PLEADS FOR UNITED STAY
Diego Forlan has urged Manchester United not to do the inevitable and sell him this summer.
The Uruguayan has been lined up for a loan move to Atletico Madrid but would dearly love another chance to prove he is worthy of a regular place at Old Trafford.
After appearing in the Copa America for his country, the much-maligned striker joined United on their American tour but, although he could argue he had little chance to rest, his performances once again did little to suggest he will oust Ruud van Nistelrooy, Louis Saha or Alan Smith from the starting line-up.
" I do not want to leave United," he pledged.
" I am aware of all the speculation about my future, but nobody at the club has told me I am being sold.
" And, certainly, I do not want to go.
" I still think I can do a good job for the team.
" I have proved that, when I get a decent run of games, I start scoring. But the longest run I have had is six matches.
" I just need another chance to show the manager and the fans that I can still be a part of the future of the team.
" I love this club and I want to go on being a United player."
Nevertheless, a switch to La Liga may be in the best interests of the South American, who has struggled to impress since arriving from Independiente.
