" Go-ahead for Portsmouth stadium"

The development will be built to the west of the Ty Europe stand
Portsmouth Football Club have been given the go-ahead to redevelop their stadium to a capacity of 35,000.
At a public meeting in the Guildhall on Wednesday, Portsmouth City Council voted in favour of the proposal which will cost about £125m.

The development will include 500 houses, shops, restaurants and leisure facilities at Fratton Park with 14% of the homes being social housing.

Pompey hope the money made from the project will offset the stadium cost.

Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric said of the decision: " It means a lot to the club and to the city.

" I am very thankful to the city council and to the people who have participated on this project."

Republic of Ireland defender John O´Shea is determined to stake a claim in the team before £6.9m buy Gabriel Heinze arrives.

The Argentina international is not due to begin his stay at Old Trafford until September after being called up for the Olympics as well as the Copa America.

O´Shea is hoping to use the opening weeks of the season to put down a marker.

" I have definitely got to make an impact quickly before Gabriel arrives," he said. " That´s the way I have to look at it.

" Gabriel could be a world-beater when he turns up and the club wants to keep improving. The manager doesn´t want to go backwards so he brings in quality.

" It is a case of the club wanting to keep moving and you have to keep moving with it.

" There were some matches last season when I suppose I knew I didn´t have that competition. This keeps you on the edge.

" You look at the squad as a whole and it is so fierce for every position that when you get a chance you have to stake your claim.

" It might be just one game you get to show it and then you have to prove why you want that position and if you are good enough to keep that position.

Foot - Amical : Le Celtic bat MU ( 2-1)

Le Celtic Glasgow a battu Manchester United ( 2-1) au cours d´un match amical disputé mercredi à Philadelphie. Le champion d´Ecosse avait rapidement ouvert la marque grâce à Chris Sutton ( 9e) mais MU est parvenu à égaliser avant la mi-temps par l´intermédiaire de sa recrue venue de Leeds, Alan Smith ( 36e). Le Celtic a finalement gagné grâce à une ultime réalisation de Craig Beatie ( 71e).

Craig Beattie scored the winner as Celtic beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions World Series.
Chris Sutton had given Celtic an early lead with a penalty after Jonathan Spector fouled Stilian Petrov.

Alan Smith equalised with a header from a corner before 20-year-old Beattie´s winner after Roy Keane lost possession.

But Celtic´s evening had already been sullied when Alan Thompson was stretchered off after a heavy challenge from Chris Eagles.

The Celtic players reacted angrily to the challenge and Thompson appeared to be in some distress as he was taken from the field.

Thompson was playing his first match of the tour - Celtic had previously lost to Chelsea and Liverpool - after being troubled by a calf injury.

Celtic manager Martin O´Neill flew in only a few hours before the match in Philadelphia and named a strong team.

United brought back goalkeeper Tim Howard as well as the Neville brothers, Gary and Phil, after losing on penalties to Bayern Munich on Sunday.

After Celtic took the lead through Sutton, United responded strongly.

Kieron Richardson headed wide from close range and Eric Djemba-Djemba shot over from close range.

United equalised after 35 minutes through Smith and the former Leeds striker should have added a second for United in the 50th minute but lofted a shot over the bar.

Celtic´s winner came after 71 minutes, with Beattie beating Howard from a tight angle.

United substitute Diego Forlan found himself clear but a poor first touch allowed keeper Magnus Hedman the chance to collect the ball.

Phil Bardsley could have put United level on the stroke of full time but hooked the ball over from a good position.

After the game O´Neill revealed that Thompson could miss the start of the season but that his injury is not too serious.

" Alan has a stud mark," said O´Neill. " Roddy Macdonald ( the doctor) cleaned out the the wound and he thinks it might take a little bit of time to heal up.

" It was a blow considering the season is only 10 days away and that appears to be too early for him."

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to summer signing Smith´s contribution.

" He has great confidence and that is impressive," he said. " He could have got four goals in this game, not one."

Ferguson added: " This game had a quicker competitive edge to it than the one against Bayern Munich.

" We played some intelligent football and we got some of our key players back, which was important."

Apparemment Smith sera une excellente recrue s´il continue comme ça, vivement que Miller débute lui aussi...

si miller est la méme surprise que smith alors la plupart de mes inquietudes vont disparaitre . .

kieran est aussi pas mal et va bien soulager giggs cette année . ..

Oui, j´ai lu que Kieran avait fait un bien meilleur match ce coup-ci et confirme enfin son statut de doublure de Giggs.

Dans l´ensemble ils ont pas mal joué apparemment, en dehors de Bellion voire Forlan ^^

Prochain match samedi face à Milan, avec le retour d´autres titulaires.

Sir Alex Ferguson will turn to baseball tonight to boost Manchester United´s American image. The United boss will pitch up at the Yankees Stadium to do his bit for the special tie-up between United and the New York Yankees. Ferguson has agreed to throw the first pitch in the Major League match between the Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.
