Rossoneri deny Rui Costa has signed Old Trafford deal

AC Milan firmly denied on Monday that their Portuguese midfielder Rui Costa had signed a two-year contract with Manchester United.

A report in the Portuguese press claimed that the player had agreed to join United but the Italian champions say he will play for the Rossoneri next season.

AC Milan´s sporting director Ariedo Braida said: " It´s nonsense. Rui Costa is staying at Milan and he is non-transferable.´´

Rui Costa, 32, is in the latter stages of his career and last season lost his starting place at San Siro to Kaka, the talented youngster from Brazil.

Rui Costa played for the Portuguese at Euro 2004 and did have his moments of brilliance, including a wonder strike from outside the area in their quarter-final win over England.

He made his name at Benfica in a three-year spell from 1991-1994, and then moved to Fiorentina where he spent seven seasons.

The last three years of his career have been in Milan, where he has won titles in both Italy and Europe

Smith looks set to silence the doubters

It was the sight that Leeds fans had been dreading - Alan Smith wearing a Manchester United shirt. On Sunday 25 July, their nightmares became reality when the 24-year-old Yorkshireman made his debut for the Reds in Chicago.

Earlier this summer, the England striker became the latest player to make the cross-Pennine switch from Elland Road to Old Trafford, joining a list that also includes Rio Ferdinand, Eric Cantona and Joe Jordan.

" Brave" is how Sir described Smith´s decision to swap the white of Leeds for the Red of Manchester but then his performances over the years have shown him to be no shrinking violet. His tenacious style of play made him a cult hero at Leeds and those United fans inside the New Soldier Field stadium wondered whether he would be able to reproduce those effort levels for a club that he didn´t have a lifelong emotional attachment to. Smith gave an affirmative answer to that question on his debut for the Reds.

As early as the second minute, he showed his eye for goal, firing in a shot that was on target until it hit Bayern defender Sammy Kuffour and ballooned behind for a corner. Ten minutes later he capitalised on a Tobias Rau slip to almost create an opening for himself. He was clearly revelling in his favoured role as the main striker, showing he is perfectly capable of playing with his back to goal.

Talks over tactics had resulted in Sir Alex telling Smith he´d be a centre-forward in his first season at Manchester United. On the evidence of the Bayern game, the new-boy will provide Fergie with a different kind of option in attack. His strength makes him a difficult player to contain and his prodigious effort levels mean defenders are given little time on the ball. Just ask our old friend Sammy Kufour - Bayern´s Ghanian international resorted to fouling Smith on several occasions. One scything second-half tackle earned Kuffour a yellow card ( not to mention a few choice words from the United striker!)

" It was great to get back playing again," said Smith after the game.

" I can´t wait for the next few matches and then for the competitive games to begin. I want to show what I can do."

In summary, Smith can be pleased with his first contribution to the United cause. Okay, so he didn´t find the back of the net, not even during the penalty shoot-out. But he still showed enough to indicate he´ll be able to win over the Reds fans who remain dubious about him, if only for his strong ties with Leeds.

Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est qu’au fil des années, Roy Keane n’a rien perdu de sa verve. Surtout lorsqu´on lui parle de Steven Gerrard et de Patrick Vieira.

Quand on demande à Roy Keane ce qu’il pense de Patrick Vieira ( Arsenal) et de Steven Gerrard ( Liverpool), l’analyse du Mancunien est sans appel. «Je suis largement au niveau de Gerrard et de Vieira. Alex Ferguson est très élogieux envers Steven Gerrard et cela ne fait aucun doute : c’est un très bon joueur. Mais je suis largement meilleur. L’an passé, Gerrard n’a pas touché une balle durant les trois premiers mois de la saison. Quant à Vieira, comme d’autres joueurs, je regarde comment ils se comportent dans les grands matches. Je l’ai fait quand Arsenal a joué Chelsea en Ligue des Champions…»

LONDRES ( AFP) - Les nouvelles infidélités du sélectionneur de l´équipe d´Angleterre de football Sven-Goran Eriksson et la relation avec une prostituée prêtée au buteur prodige Wayne Rooney étaient largement exposées lundi dans la presse anglaise, toujours friande de secrets d´alcôve.

Dans le cas d´Eriksson, les allégations ont atteint la fédération de football ( FA) et pourraient mettre en cause la position du technicien suédois.

La relation de six ans entre Eriksson, 56 ans, et une plantureuse avocate italienne avait survécu à une première escapade médiatisée du sélectionneur en 2002. Elle a volé en éclats la semaine dernière, quand des journaux ont rapporté que l´entraîneur avait eu une liaison avec Faria Alam, 38 ans, une employée de la FA.

L´entraîneur, Mlle Alam et surtout la FA ont fermement démenti.

Mais l´instance dirigeante s´est couverte de ridicule ce week-end, quand des e-mails ont été publiés démontrant non seulement que Faria Alam était la maîtresse d´Eriksson, mais encore que la jeune femme avait eu une aventure juste avant avec un autre responsable de la FA, Mark Palios.

M. Palios avait été recruté en 2003 pour restaurer la réputation morale du football anglais, miné par d´innombrables affaires de beuveries, de violence et d´agressions sexuelles commises par des joueurs.

La FA a été contrainte de confirmer les deux liaisons de Mlle Alam par un communiqué dimanche. Elle a l´intention, selon un dirigeant cité par le Daily Telegraph, de demander à l´employée sa démission pour mensonge.

Sven-Goran Eriksson n´a fait officiellement " aucun commentaire", mais sa position paraît fragilisée.

L´attaquant d´Everton ( D1 anglaise) Wayne Rooney, d´autre part, aurait été quitté samedi par sa fiancée Coleen, 18 ans comme lui, pour avoir recouru aux services d´une prostituée un soir de match en décembre 2002.

Selon The Sun, Coleen aurait giflé Rooney en apprenant que lui et trois autres hommes avaient invité des call girls dans une chambre d´hôtel. Le Daily Mirror publie pour sa part une photo en pied de la prostituée, une blonde âgée de 21 ans.

Début avril, une jeune femme avait mis la presse en émoi en assurant qu´elle avait eu une liaison avec David Beckham, le capitaine de l´équipe d´Angleterre.

Newcastle have agreed a fee with Manchester United for midfielder Nicky Butt subject to a medical.
The 29-year-old England international is believed to have joined the Magpies for a fee in the region of £2.5m

Butt will fly home early from United´s US tour to complete the formalities of a move that ends his 11-year association with the Old Trafford club.

" We have agreed terms pending a medical and Butt´s terms," said a statement on Manchester United´s website.

" Nicky Butt has left the Manchester United tour of America," the club confirmed.

Butt won six Premiership titles during his time at United and is firmly established in the England squad.

Manchester United are the latest side to cast an eye over Finnish kid Joona Toivio.
The 16-year-old has caught the attention of a host of clubs with his impressive efforts for HJK Helsinki`s youth team.

He has been training with HJK´s first team all season and has looked comfortable alongside the club´s major stars.

Toivio is comfortable operating as a holding midfielder but is more at home in the heart of the back four and he will head over to England in the near future to be put through his paces by Sir Alex Ferguson´s coaching staff.

HJK´s sporting director Tuomo Saarnio feels Toivio has the quality to make the step up to the highest level.

" We are very happy that our young players attract interest from abroad," said Saarnio. " Eremenko Jr is the latest HJK player to leave Finland for a bigger country.

" Toivio is one of those players who will have the same opportunities in the future."

Ferguson is a regular raider of the Scandinavian market for young talent and he could well take Toivio under his wing if he impresses.
