QUESTION TWO: Where in the hell are you going when life ends?
TOUGH QUESTION, NO ANSWERS?: What happens to our body as we lie dying? What is the journey to our final destination like? Is there really an “afterlife” after all? If so, where are “heaven” and “hell” located? Is there a way to “guarantee” entry into heaven and avoiding going to hell altogether?
These are particularly tough questions with little or no provable and reliable answers. But is there a way for science to objectively and rationally answer one or all of these important questions? Perhaps so.
HARVARD UNIVERSITY (Veritas): An ongoing research project at Harvard University Medical School has been quietly uncovering the complex physiological and psychological processes that occur when we die.
First, the findings involving the physiological aspects of the human experience of dying will be discussed. The aim here is for you to no longer fear death. It is, after all, just another, albeit final, step in the cycle of your life.
Based on current statistics, you will most likely die quietly from “natural causes” when you are much older and most probably will enjoy a delightful twelve minutes journey into the light.
THE PHYSIOLOGY OF DEATH: Although there are multiple pathways that ultimately lead to death including trauma, injuries, diseases, organs malfunctions and “natural causes”, there is but one way to die. The heart must stop functioning. Cardiac arrest is defined as the full cessation of all heart activities which then results in the onset of death if it is not or cannot be restarted using CPR. The process of death is not physically painful and need not be feared. In fact, all physical pain ends with the onset of full cardiac arrest which is also not painful. However, it is your brain’s response to death that is critical.
In order to better understand the process of death, a familiar example might help. If you have ever been in a squatting position for a period of time and then suddenly stood up, you may have experienced a certain degree of dizziness perhaps even passing out. The dizziness or the passing out you experienced is analogous to what the onset of death feels like. Here is why.
The sudden movement from a squatting position to a standing position resulted in the blood pressure and thus the blood supply to your brain to drop precipitously. Your brain’s response to potential death is to cause the body to drop (faint) or return to a lower position until the blood pressure to your brain is returned to normal.
However, when full cardiac arrest occurs, the body’s blood pressure drops to zero and the brain responds instantly. First, it attempts to restart the heart. If that fails, the brain then immediately prepares for the death of the entire body including itself. In less than a second, the brain is flooded with a powerful chemical cocktail that begins to destroy the brain’s neurons. The brain in turn responds to this chemical invasion with a natural compound Harvard scientists have identified as NAG, N-AcetylGlucosamine
(similar to Ketamine). This potent chemical produces an altered state of reality as it acts to reverse the destructive forces of the catabolic chemicals that were initially released.
As death of major body organs continues, NAG floods all the major perception centers (the five senses) of the brain. The sense of hearing, for instance, continues to function normally for a few minutes. Sight however is affected early on as the eyes quickly begin to die producing a tunnel like vision. Often a bright white light is seen at the end of this tunnel. The dying person feels as if some form of propulsion moves them ever faster through and finally out of the tunnel.
Total and complete brain death (termed clinical death) occurs in approximately 10 to 15 minutes after the onset of full cardiac arrest. During that period of time, all major body organs shut down and individual cells die. The brain also continues to shut down as individual neurons die.
The effect of NAG and other potent neurotransmitters released by the brain during the last ten to fifteen minutes of life produce profound states of altered consciousness in the dying person.
THE PSYCHOLOGY OF DEATH: One of the more fascinating findings of the Harvard study involves our brain’s reaction to the knowledge that it is dying.
As we lie paralyzed, dying and cut off from reality, we are swept away into a strange world conjured up by our own simple mind. We are mere spectators as we enter this hyper real world full of splendid sounds, luscious colors, and powerful emotions. It is a quick ten plus minute voyage that, somehow, seems to last for eternity.
Science has now been able to shed some light on the psychological aspects of the death experience by studying Near Death Experiences (NDE).
NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES: The Harvard University Medical School’s extensive study of the death experience originated from the quest for answers to questions left unanswered by the studies of clinical death.
Also studied was the fascinating phenomena termed NDE (Near Death Experience). Further, the Harvard study was also based on reports of injured soldiers’ reactions in Vietnam to an anesthetic named Ketamine. Ketamine sometimes produced experiences similar to NDE events.
