Nigeria FA ridiculed over Martins´ age row
font size ZoomIn ZoomOut

The Nigeria Football Association (FA) on Thursday became an object of ridicule in the west African state´s media due to the age mistake on its website that threatens the career of Inter Milan striker, Obafemi Martins.

Italian newspapers reported that the website stated Martins was born on May 1, 1978 instead of his passport date of October 28, 1984, and therefore called the Nigerian player "a cheat."

Ibrahim Galadima, chairman of the Nigeria FA, quickly reacted to the speculations, saying the website is riddled with mistakes like that of Martins´ birthdate.

"Most of the information on the site were put there by a private consultant and so we had little control over him," Galadima said. " We will make this position very clear to his cluband also make the necessary corrections on the website."

Martins himself said he "felt very bad about this situation" and would not play for Nigeria again, while Inter president, Giancinto Facchetti, released a statement, saying he believed Martins and demanding "this error reported ... be corrected immediately."

Nigerian newspapers criticized the Nigeria FA for such errors.

"Administrative lapses, bane of Nigerian football for many decades, yesterday reared their ugly heads," The Guardian daily lamented. "Want to laugh? Visit www.nigeriafa.com," exclaimed Vanguard, another independent newspaper.

Investigations show that the FA official website was riddled with errors regarding the personal details of the Super Eagles players. For example, the website, which has not been updated since March, credited several players as having the same birthdate.

Bizarrely, Wolverhampton Wanderers of England defender, Seyi Olofinjana, according to website, was born on November 15, 1982 but made his debut on June 30, 1980.

"The compilers did not only make a mistake with Martins´ birthday, he had also mistakenly used a copy-paste system, which led to" the mistakes, The Guardian daily speculated.

The NFA is not new to doing such discrepancies. In 1999, Nigeria got its first ban from world football governing body FIFA for wrong documentation of ages of players. The FA officials have also in the past forgotten players´ passports, jerseys and allowances.

"At a time like this when all Nigerians are thinking of how theSuper Eagles would qualify for the World Cup, the Nigeria FA has once again exposes its incompetence to the world," Vanguard commented.

Nigeria are presently second in Group Four behind Angola, though both have 15 points, because the latter have a better head to head record. Yet they still have two matches to go for the soleticket for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
