L’histoire de New York débute en 1542 lorsque Giovanni Verrazano, un florentin, découvre l’emplacement actuel de New York. En 1609, Henri Hudson jette l’ancre dans la baie qui porte désormais son nom. La première colonie aurait du être crée en 1621 avec la création de la Compagnie Hollandaise des Indes Occidentales, mais elle ne vit réellement le jour qu’en 1647 avec l’arrivée de Peter Stuyvesant, gouverneur de la ville qui comptait déjà 300 habitants. Cette ville fut baptisée Nouvelle amsterdam.

En septembre 1664, les Anglais s’emparent de la ville. Le roi Charles II en fit cadeau à son frère, le duc d’York, d’où le nom actuel, New York. A la fin du XVIIème siècle, la ville compte désormais près de 20.000 habitants, et presque 60.000 en 1775.

Lors de la guerre d’Indépendance, Georges Washington, ayant remporté la victoire sur les anglais, s’en va à New York pour y être proclamé président en 1789.

Mais New York ne deviendra une ville véritablement importante qu’au cours du XIXème siècle, son port devenant progressivement le plus important au monde. Les gratte ciel commencent à être construit en 1902 avec l’édification du Flatiron Building.

Après cette période de prospérité vint la période noir. Pendant l’été 1929, la bourse atteint des records. Pour certains financier, après une telle hausse, l’économie de la ville ne pouvait plus chutez. C’est le jeudi 24 octobre que la crisse arriva. Durant 22 jours, la bourse va s’effondrer. A la mi-novembre, la moitié de la est au chômage. C’est grâce a Fiorello La Guardia, élue maire en 1933, que la ville va retrouvez sa stabilité.
