Question
When I try to play after uninstalling and reinstalling the game, I am getting an error message stating "user interface is version 4, expecting version 3."
Answer
This error commonly occurs when the game is uninstalled and the game directory is not deleted. When you patch the game, the uninstaller does not know that files were added with the patch(es), so it will leave them. Because these files are left over, it looks at them and identifies the wrong version.
Uninstall the game following the directions outlined below.
1) Click the Start button > Settings > Control Panel.
2) Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3) Find Quake 3 Arena in the list of programs, highlight it, then click the Add/Remove button.
4) Delete the Quake III folder from the hard drive.
5) Reinstall the game now using the Full install size, try installing it to the default directory to be safe (C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena).
Once the game is installed, download the latest Point Release patch and install it as well. You can find the patch at www.quake3world.com. Try to avoid beta patches
